Chapter 13 - The Arrest That Wasn’t EnoughBy morning, Black Orchard was gone.

Not erased.
Nothing that evil could be erased by fire.
But exposed.
News helicopters circled over the burned apple farm. Police cars lined the road. Animal rescue vans carried trembling dogs toward emergency shelters. Paramedics wrapped children in blankets. Federal agents arrived with boxes, cameras, and faces trained to reveal nothing.
Victor Sable was taken away in handcuffs, smiling like a man who still owned the ending.
Julian watched from the edge of the property with rain drying on his coat and soot on his hands.
Maisie sat in the back of an ambulance beside Elena. Her mother had not released her hand for more than a minute at a time.
Finn stood outside the ambulance doors, arms crossed, glaring at every official who came too close.
Cyrus lay at Maisie’s feet.
When an animal control officer suggested sedating him, the dog lifted his head and showed teeth.
The officer quickly found paperwork elsewhere.
Elena looked at Maisie’s face like she was trying to memorize what time had stolen.
“You were six when they took you from the apartment,” Elena said softly. “You had a fever, yes. But not one that should have blinded you.”
Maisie’s fingers tightened.
Finn turned. “Who did it?”
Elena closed her eyes. “A doctor at St. Mercy. He worked for Sable.”
Finn looked ready to break something.
Maisie whispered, “You knew?”
“No.” Elena’s voice cracked. “Not until later. Not until I found records after they captured me. By then they had convinced me you were dead.”
Maisie sat very still.
The truth did not arrive like lightning.
It arrived like winter.
Slow.
Numbing.
Every memory rearranged itself.
The hospital smell. The cold hands. The medicine that burned. The morning she woke to darkness and her mother crying so hard she could not speak.
“They hurt me to use me,” Maisie said.
Elena pulled her closer. “Yes.”
Maisie’s tears came silently.
Finn climbed into the ambulance and wrapped his arms around both of them.
For once, no one told him to move.
Julian remained outside.
He gave them privacy because he did not know how to belong inside grief that honest.
Mace approached. “Federal lead wants your statement.”
Julian’s mouth curved without humor. “I’m sure he does.”
“He also wants to know why three known Hart vehicles were at a human trafficking and illegal animal fighting site before law enforcement arrived.”
“Tell him we got lost.”
Mace stared.
Julian sighed. “Fine. Tell him I followed evidence tied to my missing sister and rescued kidnapped children.”
“That sounds better.”
“It sounds worse legally.”
Mrs. Greer joined them, carrying two coffees and looking offended by the entire justice system. “The girl needs a hospital.”
Julian looked toward the ambulance.
“She hates hospitals.”
“Reasonably.”
Mace lowered his voice. “We have another problem.”
Julian turned.
“Victor’s lawyer is already here.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed. “He was arrested twenty minutes ago.”
“Lawyer arrived fifteen minutes ago with a court order blocking release of certain Black Orchard records due to ‘national security concerns.’”
Mrs. Greer muttered something very unladylike.
Julian looked toward the line of black government vehicles.
“National security,” he repeated.
Mace nodded. “Sable wasn’t selling only to criminals.”
Julian’s gaze moved to Maisie.
A blind child who heard lies in breathing and bombs through walls.
A girl men like Victor would call an asset.
His jaw hardened.
“They’ll come for her legally next.”
Mrs. Greer’s eyes sharpened. “Over my dead body.”
Julian said nothing.
That possibility was exactly what worried him.
Inside the ambulance, Maisie lifted her head.
“What is it?” Elena asked.
Maisie listened.
Across the field, Victor Sable laughed while being placed into a federal vehicle.
Not loud.
Not for the cameras.
For her.
She turned toward Julian.
“He isn’t scared.”
Julian walked to the ambulance. “No.”
“Why?”
“Because he thinks powerful people will protect him.”
Maisie wiped her face.
“Will they?”
Julian looked at Elena.
Then at Finn.
Then at Cyrus.
Then at the children being carried from the ruins.
“They’ll try.”
Maisie’s expression changed.
The little girl who had sat in the dirt with a monster was still there.
But now something older stood beside her.
“Then we need proof they can’t hide.”
Julian crouched so his voice would not carry.
“The drive from Cyrus’s collar may not be enough.”
Maisie touched the dog’s head.
“Cyrus carried one secret.”
Elena inhaled sharply. “Maisie…”
Maisie turned toward her. “You hid more, didn’t you?”
Elena looked away.
Finn whispered, “Mom?”
The word Mom came out awkwardly, painfully, but Elena heard it. Her face softened and broke all at once.
“Yes,” she said. “I hid more.”
Julian leaned closer. “Where?”
Elena looked toward the burned orchard.
“Not where they would search.”
Cyrus lifted his head.
May you like
Elena’s voice dropped.
“I buried everything under Nora Doyle’s grave.”
