Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Raised a MonsterThe ventilation passage ended beneath the station’s old ticket office.

Clara waited there with Leo wrapped in a gray blanket. She had a cut on her forehead, but the baby was unharmed.

Dante leaned against the wall, his hand pressed to his shoulder. Blood seeped between his fingers.

“The bullet is still inside,” Clara said.

“Remove it.”

“Here?”

“Now.”

They found an abandoned staff room with a metal table. Alina held a flashlight while Clara cut Dante’s shirt open. The bullet had entered below his collarbone and lodged near the shoulder blade.

He did not make a sound while Clara removed it.

Alina watched his face for signs of pain. There were none.

“You can stop pretending you’re made of stone,” she said.

“I’m not pretending.”

“You are shaking.”

“Blood loss.”

“Of course.”

Clara wrapped the wound tightly.

Leo reached for Dante.

Dante looked surprised.

“He wants you,” Alina said.

“He wants everyone.”

“Not everyone.”

Dante took the baby. Leo pressed his face against Dante’s uninjured shoulder and fell quiet.

The sight affected Alina more than it should have. Dante looked less like a feared crime lord and more like a tired father trying to remember how to hold something fragile.

“The vault is uploading,” Clara said. “If Michele stops the system, the evidence may be lost.”

“Not all of it,” Dante replied. “I copied the ledgers before we escaped.”

“Where?”

He tapped the inside of his jacket.

Alina’s gaze dropped to the dragon tattoo.

“Michele said the mark came from a woman before Rafael.”

Clara nodded. “Her name was Adriana Vale.”

“Rafael’s mother?”

“The founder of the organization.”

Alina stared at her. “A woman?”

“The men who followed her later erased her from the records. Adriana began by smuggling women and children out of abusive homes. She believed she was saving them. Then the money grew, the enemies multiplied, and the organization became what it was.”

“Rafael inherited it.”

“He turned protection into ownership.”

“And Dante?”

Clara looked at him holding Leo.

“Dante was the one Adriana wanted to inherit the original purpose.”

Dante’s expression hardened. “She died before I was old enough to know her.”

“She left letters.”

“My father burned them.”

“Not all of them.”

Clara opened a hidden drawer in the staff room. Inside was a bundle of letters bound with red ribbon.

Alina recognized the ribbon.

It had belonged to her mother.

She touched it with shaking fingers.

“Why do you have this?”

“Rosa gave it to Elena. Elena gave it to me.”

Alina opened the first letter.

The handwriting was not Rosa’s. It was older and sharper.

My son Rafael,

If you read this, you have mistaken power for permission. The dragon is not a crown. It is a promise to protect those who cannot protect themselves. The day you use it to own another life, you will lose the right to wear it.

Alina handed the letter to Dante.

His eyes moved slowly over the page.

“My father knew this,” he said.

“He destroyed it because he wanted the mark to mean obedience,” Clara replied.

Alina found a second letter.

This one was addressed to Rosa.

Rosa,

The child you carry may be the only bridge between the Vale blood and the Rosselli blood. If Rafael comes for her, send her to the man who still remembers what the dragon was meant to be.

Beneath the words was a name.

Dante.

Alina looked at him.

“My mother was supposed to bring me to you?”

“I was nineteen,” Dante said. “I didn’t know she existed.”

“But Adriana knew you would protect me.”

“Adriana was dead.”

“She still knew more about you than you did.”

He looked down at Leo. “Maybe she was wrong.”

“You protected me tonight.”

“Because my enemies wanted you.”

“You protected me before you knew why.”

Dante met her eyes.

For a moment, the gunfire and the hidden vault disappeared. There was only the dim staff room, the sleeping baby, and the impossible bond between two people who had inherited the same monster.

Then Dante’s phone rang.

He answered.

It was Enzo.

“Boss, we have a problem. The police have surrounded the station.”

“Michele called them?”

“No. The order came from the state attorney’s office.”

Dante’s gaze shifted to the letters.

“They’re not here to arrest Michele,” Alina said.

“They’re here for us.”

Enzo’s voice lowered. “There’s more. The media is reporting that you kidnapped a waitress and murdered your own brother.”

Alina felt the floor vanish beneath her.

“Michele controls the story,” Clara said.

Dante handed Leo to Alina.

“Then we change it.”

“How?” she asked.

Dante opened his jacket and removed the copied ledger.

“We release the truth before he can bury it.”

Above them, sirens surrounded the station.

And from the darkness of the tunnel, Michele’s voice called out.

“Dante, bring me the girl, and I may let the baby live.”
