Chapter 13 - The HearingThe courthouse steps were packed before eight.

Reporters lined both sides of the entrance, cameras raised, microphones ready. The story had become irresistible: billionaire groom, abandoned bride, dying ex-lover, secret daughter, stolen checks, old-money corruption.

America loved a scandal.

It loved a crying bride even more.

Victoria arrived first.

She wore navy instead of white now. No veil. No ring visible. Her hair was smooth, her face pale, her eyes shaded with grief for the cameras.

Celeste walked beside her.

Preston followed like a man escorting innocence itself.

Then Ethan arrived with Lucy.

The noise doubled.

“Ethan! Is Lucy your daughter?”

“Lucy, did your mother tell you to stop the wedding?”

“Mr. Pierce, did you know Olivia Bennett was alive?”

Lucy froze.

Ethan felt it.

He took off his coat and angled it around her, shielding her face without hiding her like shame.

“Eyes on me,” he said quietly.

Lucy looked up.

“Do we run?”

“No.”

“What do we do?”

“We walk.”

Nora appeared on Lucy’s other side.

“And we make them regret bad manners.”

Lucy swallowed, then nodded.

They walked together through the cameras.

Inside, the courtroom felt too small for the damage waiting to unfold.

Olivia could not attend physically, but her sworn testimony had been submitted under emergency motion. A judge named Maren Whitcomb presided with the expression of a woman allergic to nonsense.

Victoria’s attorney stood first.

He spoke of manipulation. Emotional instability. A sick mother exploiting a child. A powerful man overwhelmed by guilt. He described Victoria as charitable, generous, devastated.

Lucy sat beside Ethan, fists clenched.

When the attorney said Olivia had accepted “financial support for years without complaint,” Lucy whispered, “She complained every time she cried.”

Ethan put a hand over hers.

Then Nora rose.

She did not perform.

She dismantled.

She entered the DNA test.

The checks.

The recording transcript.

The storage unit incident.

The attempted hospital visit under false name.

The safe deposit instructions from Raymond Pierce.

Then she played thirty seconds of Victoria’s tape.

Tell him it isn’t his. Men like Ethan can forgive betrayal faster than obligation.

The courtroom changed.

Victoria did not move.

But her throat did.

Judge Whitcomb leaned forward.

“Counsel for Miss Hale, did your client know this recording existed before filing her petition?”

Victoria’s attorney looked like a man realizing he had stepped barefoot onto glass.

“Your Honor, we have not authenticated—”

“That was not my question.”

He glanced at Victoria.

She stared straight ahead.

The judge’s eyes narrowed.

Nora called Ethan briefly.

He confirmed paternity. Confirmed the wedding events. Confirmed threats. Confirmed Olivia’s condition. He did not look at Victoria once.

Then, unexpectedly, the judge asked to speak with Lucy in chambers.

Ethan stiffened.

Nora leaned close. “It’s normal.”

Lucy looked terrified.

“I don’t want to.”

“You can say that,” Ethan told her.

Judge Whitcomb heard him.

“Miss Bennett,” she said gently, “you may decline. But I would like to understand what you want, away from cameras, lawyers, and adults who keep speaking about you like you are furniture.”

Lucy stared at the judge.

Then she stood.

“I’ll go.”

Ethan watched her disappear into chambers with the judge and a child advocate.

The wait lasted seventeen minutes.

It felt like seventeen years.

When Lucy returned, her eyes were red, but her shoulders were straight.

The judge resumed.

“I am denying Miss Hale’s petition in full. Further, given the evidence presented, I am issuing temporary protective orders preventing Victoria Hale, Celeste Hale, Preston Hale, and their agents from contacting Lucy Bennett or Olivia Bennett.”

Victoria’s face cracked.

“Your Honor—”

The judge lifted a hand.

“You will not speak unless instructed.”

Victoria sat back.

Judge Whitcomb continued.

“Emergency paternity recognition is granted. Ethan Pierce is recognized as Lucy Bennett’s biological father pending final filings. Temporary custody remains with Olivia Bennett while medically competent, with Ethan Pierce granted immediate parental standing and emergency guardianship rights should Ms. Bennett become incapacitated.”

Lucy’s hand found Ethan’s under the table.

This time, she reached first.

The judge looked directly at Ethan.

“Mr. Pierce, biology does not impress this court. Conduct will.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Outside the courtroom, Victoria waited near a marble column.

Despite the protective order, she was close enough for Ethan to hear when she spoke.

“She’ll never love you,” Victoria said softly.

Ethan stopped.

Lucy’s grip tightened.

Victoria’s eyes moved to the girl.

“You think he wants you? He wants revenge. You are just the shape revenge took.”

Lucy went pale.

Nora stepped forward. “One more word and I will drag you back in front of the judge by your perfect hair.”

Victoria smiled.

But Ethan turned.

He looked at Lucy, not Victoria.

“Do you want to leave?”

Lucy looked at him for a long moment.

Then she looked at Victoria.

“No,” she said.

She stepped forward, still holding Ethan’s hand.

“My mom loved me when it cost her everything,” Lucy said. “You were loved by everyone and still turned into this.”

Victoria’s smile vanished.

May you like

Lucy turned away.

And for the first time, Victoria Hale looked smaller than a child.
