Chapter 15 - The Envelope in the SafeDr. Han’s envelope contained three things.

A handwritten letter from Kendra.
A photograph of Grant Whitmore standing beside Lydia Crane at a Valor House gala.
And a birth certificate.
Not Hope’s.
Lucy’s.
Earl stared at it while Mara read over his shoulder.
Father: Unknown.
Mother: Kendra Vale.
Attached behind it was a second document—an amended filing Kendra had never signed.
It granted temporary financial guardianship of Lucy to Valor House Family Stabilization Services.
Mara’s stomach turned.
“They tried to take Lucy legally.”
Kendra nodded weakly from her hospital bed later that night.
Hope had been returned to the NICU. Lucy slept curled in a chair beside her mother, refusing to leave.
“They said I was unfit,” Kendra whispered. “They said because I had no husband, no stable housing, and a history they invented, Lucy would go into emergency placement. Then they offered help.”
“Valor House,” Aaron said.
Kendra nodded.
“At first it was groceries. Rent. A case worker. Lydia acted kind. Then papers showed up. Then checks disappeared. Then Grant told me my father had stolen from the foundation and I owed them.”
Earl’s voice was barely controlled.
“Elias exposed them.”
“I know now.” Kendra looked at him with red-rimmed eyes. “But I was nineteen when it started. Alone. Scared. Every time I fought, something got worse. I lost jobs. Apartments. Lucy got pulled from daycare. Someone called police and said I was using drugs.”
“Were you?” Aaron asked gently.
Kendra looked down.
“I was clean when Hope was conceived. I relapsed once last year after they took Lucy for three days. Then I got help. I have records. But they used it forever.”
Mara heard no excuses in her voice.
Only exhaustion.
Aaron nodded. “We’ll get those records.”
Kendra touched Lucy’s hair.
“When I found Dad’s storage key hidden in an old photo frame, I started digging. I found enough to scare them. Then I found out I was pregnant. That made them worse.”
“Why?” Mara asked.
Kendra looked toward the NICU.
“Because children of deceased service members can receive benefits. Survivor lines. Trust payouts from charities. Educational accounts. Grant said babies were easier before they had voices.”
Mara’s hands clenched.
Earl stood abruptly and walked to the window.
No one stopped him.
Aaron gave him a moment, then continued.
“Kendra, do you know where Lydia is?”
Kendra shook her head. “She came to the quiet house the first day. After that, only Caroline.”
“Rebecca.”
“That’s what she calls herself when she wants doors opened.”
Aaron wrote it down.
Kendra looked at Earl’s back.
“Sarge?”
He turned.
“I named Hope after what my dad called me,” she said. “But also because he told me once that hope wasn’t a feeling. It was a duty.”
Earl’s face shifted.
“He said that to me too.”
Kendra gave a fragile smile.
“He said you were terrible at believing it.”
For one second, Elias Vale felt alive in the room.
Then Aaron’s phone rang.
He listened.
His expression hardened.
“Lydia Crane’s apartment is empty.”
Mara’s heart sank.
Aaron continued, “But detectives found shredded documents in the trash. Partial bank records. Flight information. Cash withdrawal receipts.”
“Where is she going?” Earl asked.
Aaron looked at him.
“There’s a private airfield forty minutes away.”
Kendra struggled upright.
“She won’t run alone.”
Aaron nodded grimly.
“She isn’t.”
“Grant?” Mara asked.
Aaron’s silence answered.
Earl stepped forward.
This time, Aaron did not tell him to stay.
Because they all understood something had changed.
Lydia and Grant running meant the truth was close enough to hurt them.
And desperate people with money rarely ran without taking insurance.
Kendra gripped the blanket.
“Lucy,” she whispered.
Mara looked at the sleeping child.
“She’s safe here.”
Kendra shook her head, terror flooding her face.
“No. You don’t understand.”
The room went still.
Kendra’s voice broke.
“Grant always said if I talked, he had another way to get to my children.”
At that exact moment, the NICU alarm sounded.

Not from Hope’s monitor.
From the hospital’s infant security system.
