Chapter 17 - Caleb’s BloodCaleb Ward had one brother.

Nathan.

Younger by three years. Charming where Caleb was silent. Careless where Caleb was disciplined. The kind of man who could make strangers like him and make family forgive him until forgiveness became exhaustion.

Five years earlier, Nathan disappeared after stealing from a Romano account.

Caleb had begged Allessandro for one mercy.

Let him go.

Allessandro had agreed.

One mercy.

One mistake.

Now Nathan Ward had returned wearing another man’s hat and standing in Allessandro’s kitchen at midnight.

Caleb did not defend him.

He stood in the foyer with the color drained from his face while Agnes watched with mild interest, as if the whole family tragedy had become a play performed for her benefit.

“Allessandro,” Caleb said, voice rough, “I’ll step aside.”

“No.”

“I can’t lead this if my brother—”

“No.”

Caleb looked at him.

Allessandro’s voice hardened. “You do not get to abandon your duty because blood made it painful.”

The words struck both men.

Caleb nodded once.

“Then give the order.”

“Find Nathan.”

Caleb turned to leave.

“And Caleb?”

He stopped.

“Alive.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“Yes, sir.”

They found Nathan at dusk in a motel near the highway, registered under Leo’s name.

Room 214.

Caleb knocked once.

No answer.

He kicked the door in.

Nathan sat on the bed eating vending machine crackers with a gun beside his thigh and a black stone ring on his right hand.

He looked up and smiled.

“Hey, big brother.”

Caleb hit him so hard Nathan fell against the wall.

The gun skidded under the chair.

Caleb hauled him up by the shirt.

“You went near a child.”

Nathan coughed blood and laughed.

“I went near a doll.”

Caleb hit him again.

Allessandro entered behind him.

“That’s enough.”

Caleb let go.

Nathan wiped his mouth. “Mr. Romano. Still terrifying. Still overdressed.”

Allessandro looked around the room.

Leo’s chauffeur jacket hung over a chair. A white pharmacy bottle sat on the sink. A second burner phone lay open on the bed.

“Who hired you?”

Nathan smiled.

“Depends which day.”

Caleb stepped forward.

Allessandro stopped him with one word.

“No.”

Nathan looked between them. “You trained him well.”

Allessandro picked up the black stone ring from Nathan’s hand.

Nathan flinched for the first time.

“Family ring?” Allessandro asked.

“Our mother’s.”

Caleb’s eyes flickered.

Allessandro placed it on the table.

“Emma saw this in the kitchen.”

Nathan said nothing.

“The recorder in Rosie,” Allessandro continued. “You planted the second one.”

Nathan’s smile faded.

“Didn’t know the kid would carry that ugly thing everywhere.”

Caleb’s hands curled.

Allessandro’s voice remained calm. “Why?”

Nathan looked at his brother.

“You really don’t know?”

Caleb did not speak.

Nathan laughed bitterly. “Of course not. Loyal Caleb. Good Caleb. Caleb who got a home, a job, a name people feared. I got scraps.”

“You stole from the family,” Caleb said.

“I stole from criminals.”

“You sold routes to Carlo.”

Nathan’s eyes flashed.

“And Carlo paid.”

Allessandro stepped closer.

“Carlo is finished.”

“Carlo was never the point.”

“Then who was?”

Nathan looked suddenly tired.

“The point was getting all of you at each other’s throats.”

“On whose order?”

Nathan leaned back against the wall.

“If I tell you, I’m dead.”

Caleb’s voice broke with rage. “You aimed men at a six-year-old.”

“I never told them to kill her.”

“You helped them find her!”

Nathan flinched.

That landed.

Allessandro studied him.

“You still have a line.”

Nathan laughed without humor. “Don’t romanticize me.”

“I’m not. I’m measuring.”

He picked up the burner phone.

One recent message.

SEND THE GIRL TO THE HOUSEKEEPER IF ROMANO REFUSES.

The housekeeper.

Agnes.

But Agnes had seemed surprised.

Allessandro opened the contact details.

No name.

Only initials.

M.R.

Caleb frowned. “M.R.?”

Nathan looked away.

Allessandro felt the last piece moving.

Not Carlo.

Not Dominic.

Not Agnes.

Someone with access to Nathan, Isabella, Agnes, and the Vale family.

Someone who knew staff patterns.

Someone who could move inside society without being noticed because everyone noticed only the men.

M.R.

Matilda Romano.

Carlo’s wife.

Allessandro’s aunt.

The woman who had poured tea at Giovanni’s funeral.

The woman who had held his mother’s hand two months before she fell.

The woman everyone called harmless.

Caleb whispered, “No.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Allessandro looked at him.

“She hired you.”

Nathan said nothing.

That was yes.

Outside, thunder rolled over the highway.

Allessandro turned to Caleb.

“Bring him.”

Nathan laughed softly. “You don’t understand. Matilda doesn’t want power.”

Allessandro looked back.

May you like

Nathan’s face had gone pale.

“She wants punishment.”
