Chapter 9 - The Boardroom TrapThe Vale Foundation boardroom sat on the fortieth floor of a private tower overlooking the Chicago River.

It had no sign outside.
No public directory.
No receptionist who knew what happened after business hours.
At 9:00 p.m., twelve trustees sat around a black marble table while rain streaked the windows behind them.
Victoria Vale stood at the head.
She wore white.
Not mourning black.
White.
A deliberate insult.
Celeste noticed first.
Her mouth tightened.
Dominic stood behind Adrian near the door. Felix waited near the elevators. Judge Morris had not entered the room, but two federal marshals sat in an unmarked van three blocks away, listening through a hidden transmitter under Adrian’s cuff.
Everything had to be legal enough to survive daylight.
That was Evelyn’s final victory over him.
Victoria smiled when Adrian walked in.
“Cousin.”
“Victoria.”
Her eyes lowered briefly to his empty arms.
“No baby?”
Adrian took his seat.
“No conscience?”
Several trustees shifted uncomfortably.
Victoria laughed.
“There’s the Adrian we remember.”
Celeste spoke coldly.
“The Adrian we remember would have removed you from this room already.”
Victoria turned.
“Aunt Celeste. Still mistaking cruelty for wisdom?”
“No,” Celeste replied. “Tonight I’m recognizing stupidity dressed as confidence.”
Victoria’s smile sharpened.
“Let’s begin.”
The lawyer beside her opened a folder.
“In light of unresolved questions surrounding the death of Evelyn Hart and the alleged survival of the infant known as Lily Vale—”
“Known as?” Adrian interrupted.
The lawyer swallowed.
“Legal phrasing.”
Adrian leaned back.
“Continue.”
The lawyer’s voice shook slightly.
“The board proposes emergency suspension of all trust transfers until the child’s identity can be verified and until Adrian Vale’s capacity as guardian can be reviewed.”
Dominic snorted.
Victoria ignored him.
“This is about stability,” she said. “No empire can be handed to an infant based on grief and rumor.”
Adrian watched her.
“You’re nervous.”
Victoria’s eyes flashed.
“I’m bored.”
“No. You’re nervous because you don’t know where she is.”
The room went silent.
Victoria tapped one finger on the table.
“Where is she?”
The question was too direct.
Too hungry.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“There she is.”
“Who?”
“The woman who called a baby a legal weapon.”
Several trustees looked at Victoria.
Her smile slipped.
Celeste leaned forward.
“Did you say that, Victoria?”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“I said many things in private.”
Adrian removed a small recorder from his pocket and placed it on the table.
Then he played her call.
If Adrian confirms Lily is alive, everything collapses.
The lawyer closed his eyes.
The former prosecutor beside Victoria looked like he wanted to disappear.
Victoria remained standing.
“You recorded me illegally.”
Judge Morris’s voice came through a speaker near the door.
“Not illegally enough to ignore probable cause.”
Victoria turned sharply.
Judge Morris entered with two marshals.
The trustees erupted.
Victoria pointed at Adrian.
“You brought federal officers into a private foundation meeting?”
Adrian stood.
“No. Evelyn did.”
He placed her letter on the table.
“She wanted Lily to live in a world with records.”
Victoria stared at the letter.
Something in her face changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Not of Adrian.
Of Evelyn’s handwriting.
Judge Morris stepped forward.
“Victoria Vale, this board session is now part of an active investigation into conspiracy, attempted murder, financial fraud, and obstruction.”
Victoria looked toward Peter Ash, who stood silently against the wall.
He did not move.
Adrian noticed.
So did Celeste.
Victoria’s voice lowered.
“Peter.”
Peter Ash smiled.
Then the lights went out.
The room plunged into darkness.
Someone screamed.
Glass shattered.
Adrian moved instantly, grabbing Celeste and pulling her under the table as gunfire cracked through the dark.
Dominic fired back toward the wall.
Felix shouted from the hallway.
“Elevators are locked!”
Emergency lights flickered red.
Peter Ash was gone.
So was Victoria.
Adrian cursed.
Judge Morris was on the floor, one marshal shielding her.
“Stairs!” Adrian shouted.
Dominic kicked open the emergency exit.
Smoke poured in.
Not fire smoke.
Chemical.
A distraction.
Victoria had never intended to win the board vote.
She had intended to flush everyone who mattered into one building while Peter Ash went somewhere else.
Adrian realized it too late.
His phone buzzed.
A video message.
He opened it.
Grace appeared on-screen, pale and terrified.
Behind her was the safehouse nursery.
Empty crib.
Empty blanket.
A distorted voice spoke off-camera.
“You brought the law to a family war, Adrian. That was rude.”
Adrian’s blood froze.
The camera shifted.
Peter Ash held Lily in his arms.
Emma was crying silently behind Grace, a man’s hand over her mouth.
Peter smiled.
“Victoria wants to meet her heir.”
The video ended.
For one second, Adrian made no sound.
Then he turned toward Marcus, who had been brought under guard to testify and now stood near the hallway, staring in horror.
Adrian crossed the room and seized him by the throat.
“You gave them the safehouse.”
Marcus choked.
“No—no, I didn’t. I swear.”
Adrian tightened his grip.
Marcus clawed at his wrist.
“Peter doesn’t need locations. He needs patterns.”
Adrian’s eyes burned.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus gasped.
“He knows how you think.”
Celeste appeared beside Adrian, bleeding from a cut above her eyebrow.
“No,” she said grimly. “He knows how your father thought.”
Adrian released Marcus.
His phone rang.
Victoria.
He answered.
Her voice was soft.
“Come alone.”
Lily cried faintly in the background.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Victoria continued.
“You have one hour, cousin. Bring Evelyn’s letter, Thomas’s drive, and the signed trust release.”
“And if I don’t?”
May you like
Victoria’s voice cooled.
“Then the baby who came back from the dead will disappear properly this time.”
