Chapter 9 - The File Named For EmmaThe flash drive contained twenty-three folders.

Each one had a date.

Each date matched a charity transfer, a private dinner, a board vote, or a night Victor claimed Sarah had “imagined things.”

Sarah had not imagined anything.

There were bank statements.

Audio recordings.

Copies of emails.

Photographs of signed contracts.

And one file named simply:

FOR EMMA.

Detective Hale opened it in the presence of Sarah, Claire, a federal investigator, and a lawyer appointed to protect Emma’s interests.

Sarah recognized her father’s voice before the video fully loaded.

Thomas Whitmore appeared on screen, older than she remembered, sitting behind the desk in his study. His hands trembled slightly, but his eyes were clear.

“If you are watching this,” he said, “then I failed to protect my daughter while I was alive.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Emma sat beside her, holding her hand.

Thomas continued.

“Sarah, I believe Victor has been using the foundation for criminal purposes. I also believe Lorraine knows. I do not yet have enough evidence to remove them without risking your safety. That is why I have amended the trust.”

Claire cried silently near the wall.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“Emma, sweetheart, if you ever see this, know that your grandfather loved you more than all the money in the world. This foundation belongs to you because I believe you will one day remember what it was created to do: protect children no one else protects.”

Emma leaned into Sarah.

The video continued.

“There is one more thing. My doctors believe my recent medical episodes may not be natural. I have asked Dr. Reeve for tests, but I no longer trust him. Sarah, do not eat or drink anything Victor gives you. Do not sign anything. And if I die before I can say this to your face, forgive me.”

The recording ended.

Sarah pressed her hand to her chest like something inside her had cracked open.

“My father knew,” she whispered. “He knew and he was scared.”

Federal Agent Daniel Price, who had listened without interrupting, closed the laptop.

“This is no longer just attempted murder. This is organized fraud, conspiracy, possible homicide, and attempted murder of a minor.”

Claire looked sick.

“Dad may have been killed?”

Price’s expression gave nothing away.

“We will investigate.”

At that moment, a uniformed officer entered.

“Detective Hale, we found Victor’s car.”

Everyone turned.

“Where?” Hale asked.

“Abandoned near the river. Blood on the steering wheel. No sign of him.”

Sarah knew immediately.

“He’s faking.”

Hale looked at her.

“He wants people to think he panicked. Maybe died. Maybe ran into the water. He wants time.”

Agent Price nodded. “Agreed.”

Emma tugged Sarah’s sleeve.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Daddy has a hiding place.”

The room went still.

Sarah stroked her hair. “What hiding place?”

“At the lake house.”

Sarah frowned. “We sold the lake house.”

Emma shook her head. “Daddy said grown-ups lie on paper.”

Hale crouched beside her.

“Do you know where it is?”

Emma nodded. “There’s a red door in the woods. Daddy took me there once when he said Mommy needed quiet.”

Sarah’s blood turned cold.

“When?”

Emma looked down.

“The day Grandpa died.”

The investigation pivoted within the hour.

Property records showed the lake house had indeed been sold.

But a shell company connected to Victor’s assistant had purchased the land behind it.

On that land stood a private cabin with a red door.

By sunset, police surrounded it.

Inside, they found no Victor.

But they found ropes.

Medical supplies.

Children’s clothing.

And on the kitchen table, a fresh drawing of Emma.

SHE COMES WITH ME OR NO ONE GETS HER.
