Chapter 6 - The Wedding of the YearBy six o’clock Saturday evening, Saint Augustine Cathedral glowed beneath hundreds of candles.

Black cars lined the street.

Reporters stood behind barricades.

Guests arrived wearing couture gowns and tailored tuxedos.

The wedding had become a spectacle long before anyone knew there was a crime hiding beneath it.

Nora stood in the cathedral’s private service corridor wearing a simple navy dress instead of her usual uniform.

Dominic handed her an earpiece.

“You’re sure about this?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

“Does Luca know I’m helping?”

“He knows enough.”

Nora looked through the doorway.

Luca stood near the altar.

Calm.

Controlled.

Only someone who knew him well would notice how often his right thumb moved across the edge of his wedding ring finger.

A ring that had not yet been placed there.

Elena was not in the cathedral.

Officially, she was resting after a “minor medical incident.”

In reality, she sat in a secure apartment three blocks away with police protection, watching everything through a private video feed.

Celeste believed Elena remained frightened and silent.

That misconception was essential.

At 6:18, Adrian arrived.

Dominic’s voice came through Nora’s earpiece.

“Target entered east doors.”

Adrian wore white tie and tails.

The arrogance of that almost impressed Nora.

A man implicated in kidnapping had walked into a cathedral full of witnesses because he believed wealth could still protect him.

He hugged Luca.

Nora watched Luca allow it.

“Cousin.”

“Big night.”

“So I’m told.”

Adrian smiled.

“You look nervous.”

Luca looked toward the altar.

“Marriage is a serious commitment.”

“It certainly is.”

Adrian walked away.

Dominic whispered, “He bought it.”

At 6:31, Celeste arrived.

The crowd outside erupted.

She wore a custom ivory gown with a long train embroidered with thousands of tiny crystals.

Beautiful.

So beautiful that Nora briefly understood how so many people had missed what was underneath.

Celeste’s mother cried.

Photographers shouted.

Guests whispered about perfection.

Nora thought of Elena reaching for her medication.

Perfection was useful camouflage.

The music began.

Celeste walked down the aisle.

Luca looked at her.

No smile.

Guests probably interpreted it as emotion.

Celeste reached him.

She whispered, “You could look happier.”

He whispered back, “I’m overwhelmed.”

That satisfied her.

The ceremony began.

The priest spoke about loyalty.

Truth.

Devotion.

Nora nearly laughed at the cruelty of it.

Then came the vows.

“Luca Alessandro Ventresca, do you take Celeste Marie Beaumont—”

Luca’s eyes moved toward Dominic.

Too soon.

They still needed Adrian to initiate the fraudulent transfer.

If Luca stopped the ceremony before Adrian triggered it, the defense could argue the conspiracy never progressed beyond discussion.

They wanted the attempt documented in real time.

Luca said, “I do.”

Celeste smiled.

Nora’s stomach turned.

The priest faced her.

“Celeste Marie Beaumont, do you take Luca Alessandro Ventresca—”

“I do.”

Adrian slipped out of his pew.

Dominic’s voice came through the earpiece.

“He’s moving.”

Nora followed through the side corridor.

Adrian entered a private chapel.

He removed his phone.

A second man waited inside.

Nora recognized him from company photographs.

Graham Pike.

A junior executive in Ventresca Holdings’ treasury department.

So that was the insider.

Graham opened a laptop.

“The authorization window is live.”

Adrian handed him a device.

“Use Elena’s token first.”

“What about Luca?”

“Wedding certificate should be logged in minutes.”

Graham hesitated.

“Adrian, kidnapping wasn’t part of this.”

“You were paid to press buttons.”

“I’m done after tonight.”

“Of course.”

Nora knew that tone.

Graham did too.

His face changed.

“After tonight meaning what?”

Adrian stared at him.

“Complete the transfer.”

Graham began typing.

Nora’s earpiece clicked.

Dominic whispered, “We have audio.”

Back inside the cathedral, the priest announced the exchange of rings.

Luca slid the ring onto Celeste’s finger.

Celeste did the same.

Then Adrian’s transfer request hit the bank.

$480 million.

Flagged.

Recorded.

Frozen.

Miriam’s team captured every digital credential.

Dominic said, “We have it.”

Nora exhaled.

“Move?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Celeste’s part.”

The priest smiled.

“By the authority vested in me—”

Luca lifted his hand.

The cathedral went silent.

The priest looked confused.

“Mr. Ventresca?”

Celeste’s smile froze.

“Luca?”

He faced her.

Five hundred guests leaned forward.

“I need to ask my bride one question.”

A nervous ripple moved through the church.

Celeste whispered, “Not now.”

“Yes.”

He reached into his jacket.

Celeste’s face paled.

Luca removed a silver pill case.

Elena’s.

Celeste stared at it.

“Recognize this?”

Nobody moved.

Celeste forced a laugh.

“Your mother’s medication?”

“Yes.”

“What does that have to do with our wedding?”

“Everything.”

Luca looked toward the media balcony.

Several screens used for the ceremony livestream suddenly changed.

CAM 07 appeared.

The footage began.

Celeste entering Elena’s room.

Celeste holding the pill case.

Celeste preventing Elena from leaving.

The cathedral erupted in whispers.

Celeste turned white.

“What is this?”

Luca did not answer.

The next clip played.

Mitchell Crane entering with forged documents.

Then Celeste photographing Elena’s signature.

Then audio.

“You said nobody had to die.”

Adrian’s recorded voice answered:

“I said nobody had to die before the wedding.”

Someone in the crowd gasped.

Celeste turned toward Adrian’s empty seat.

Then toward Luca.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“This is edited.”

The next screen displayed forensic metadata.

Time stamps.

Independent copies.

Server logs.

Celeste stepped backward.

“Luca, listen to me.”

“No.”

She grabbed his arm.

“You need to hear the whole story.”

“I heard enough when you threatened Nora’s daughter.”

Celeste looked toward Nora.

Hatred flashed across her face.

“You.”

Nora stepped into the aisle.

Celeste almost laughed.

“A housekeeper.”

Nora said nothing.

Celeste’s composure shattered.

“You destroyed this because of a housekeeper?”

Luca looked at her.

“No.”

His voice carried through the cathedral.

“You destroyed this because you thought people who worked for me were invisible.”

Police officers entered from the side doors.

Guests stood.

Adrian appeared in the chapel corridor, saw the officers, and ran.

Dominic followed.

Adrian shoved through a service door.

Outside, another team was waiting.

He was arrested on the cathedral steps beneath the cameras of every major news organization in the city.

Inside, Celeste backed away from Luca.

“This was Adrian’s plan.”

“Was withholding my mother’s medication his plan?”

“He told me to scare her.”

“Threatening Sofia?”

“I never intended—”

“Drugging my champagne?”

Celeste stopped.

Her eyes widened.

Luca nodded.

“Yes. We tested it.”

The priest quietly stepped away.

Celeste looked around.

Every face that had admired her now stared with horror.

Her mother was crying.

Her father sat motionless.

Celeste suddenly reached for Luca.

He moved back.

“Don’t.”

Police approached.

She whispered, “I loved you.”

For the first time all evening, Luca looked genuinely wounded.

“Maybe you did.”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“That doesn’t erase what you became.”

She was escorted away.

The cathedral doors closed behind her.

For several moments, nobody knew what to do.

Then the main screen changed again.

Elena appeared live from the secure apartment.

A collective gasp moved through the cathedral.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

“Good evening.”

Luca stared at the screen.

“Mom?”

“Hello, darling.”

Some guests laughed nervously.

Elena continued.

“I apologize for interrupting what was already a rather unusual wedding.”

Even Luca almost smiled.

Then Elena’s expression softened.

“There will be no marriage tonight.”

She looked into the camera.

“But there is something worth celebrating.”

Her eyes shifted toward Nora.

“A woman who had every reason to stay silent chose not to.”

Nora froze.

Elena said, “Nora Reyes saved my life.”

The entire cathedral turned toward her.

Nora wanted the floor to open.

Instead, applause began.

One person.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

Nora’s eyes filled.

But as she looked toward Luca, Dominic appeared behind him.

His expression killed the celebration.

He whispered something in Luca’s ear.

Luca turned pale.

“What?”

Dominic handed him his phone.

A message had arrived from an unknown encrypted account.

One photograph.

Sofia.

Again.

But this time, she was not at the safe house.

She sat in the back seat of a car.

Terrified.

Beneath the image:

You caught the bride.

You forgot the man financing her.

And suddenly everyone understood.

May you like

Adrian and Celeste had never been the top of the conspiracy.

Someone else had been watching the entire time.
