Chapter 15 - HANNAH KNEWDaniel did not remember walking back to Whitmore Tower.

He remembered the photograph in his hand.

Hannah outside a courthouse.

Hannah alive three days before the crash.

Hannah holding a folder.

Hannah standing beside Frank Carter, the father Daniel had mourned for twenty-five years.

Claire found him in the service entrance.

One look at his face and she stopped.

“What happened?”

Daniel handed her the photograph.

She looked at it.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Is that—”

“My wife.”

Claire’s eyes lifted.

“And Frank?”

Daniel nodded.

Behind her, Eleanor appeared.

Then Rose.

Then Frank stepped through the door.

Eleanor saw him and went white.

For a second, the years vanished from her face.

“Frank.”

He looked at her like she was both miracle and punishment.

“Eleanor.”

Claire stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

Frank nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel laughed.

The sound made everyone flinch.

“Apparently that runs in this story.”

They moved to a secure room away from cameras.

Frank refused coffee.

Daniel refused to sit.

Emma was not there; she was upstairs with Mrs. Alvarez, who had been brought to the tower and had already insulted three executives.

Good.

Daniel could not let Emma hear this yet.

Frank placed a worn canvas envelope on the table.

“Hannah contacted me six months before she died.”

Daniel’s voice was flat.

“How?”

“She was researching your father’s disappearance.”

Daniel frowned.

“She never told me.”

“She wanted proof first.”

That sounded like Hannah.

Careful. Protective. Infuriatingly brave.

Frank continued.

“She found old union records connecting me to Whitmore routes. She found witness statements that disappeared from police files. Then she found a sealed court petition under Eleanor Carter’s maiden name.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“My emergency custody petition.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

Eleanor’s voice trembled.

“The night I ran, I planned to take you and Jonathan. I filed papers under seal with evidence that Edward’s investors were dangerous. Those papers vanished.”

“Hannah found them,” Frank said.

Daniel gripped the back of a chair.

“She found you.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her keep digging?”

Frank flinched.

“I told her to stop.”

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

Daniel’s throat burned.

Frank opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails, handwritten notes, and a flash drive.

“Hannah discovered Victor Hale was still alive.”

Eleanor gasped.

Claire went still.

“Jonathan’s birth father,” Daniel said.

Frank nodded.

“Hale built the original network. Edward thought he was dead. Eleanor thought so too. I thought so.”

Rose whispered, “But he wasn’t.”

“No. He rebuilt under new names. Meridian Crown is one of them.”

Claire sat slowly.

“Jonathan sold to his own father?”

Frank looked at her.

“I don’t know if he knew at first. But he knows now.”

Daniel picked up one of Hannah’s notes.

Her handwriting hit him harder than any weapon.

F.C. alive? Protect Daniel first.

Whitmore daughter key?

Hale = Meridian?

Do not tell D until confirmed.

Daniel pressed the paper to his chest.

“She carried this alone.”

Frank’s eyes filled.

“She carried it because I was a coward.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

Nobody argued.

Frank accepted it.

“The day she died, Hannah was coming to meet me. She said she had found a witness who could identify the driver from the night I disappeared. She never arrived.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The crash.”

Frank nodded.

“The driver who hit her had no history of drunk driving. The tox report showed alcohol, but the blood sample chain of custody was broken.”

Daniel felt sick.

For three years, he had hated a dead stranger.

Maybe the stranger had been another pawn.

Maybe Hannah had been murdered because she loved him enough to chase a truth he had been too broken to question.

Claire reached for him.

He stepped back.

Not because of her.

Because if anyone touched him, he might fall apart.

Rose inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

Files opened.

Hannah had organized everything.

Of course she had.

Folders by date.

Cross-referenced names.

Scanned documents.

Audio clips.

One video file sat alone.

Title: FOR DANIEL.

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at it.

“No.”

Frank whispered, “I haven’t watched it.”

Claire closed the laptop halfway.

“You don’t have to.”

Daniel looked at her.

She meant it.

No pressure.

No strategy.

Just mercy.

That almost broke him.

He opened the laptop again.

“Play it.”

Hannah appeared on screen.

Sitting in their old bedroom.

Wearing the blue sweater Claire had borrowed.

Daniel made a sound and covered his mouth.

Hannah smiled sadly into the camera.

“Hey, love.”

Emma’s mother.

Daniel’s wife.

Alive in pixels.

“I hope you never see this. Because if you’re watching, I was wrong about being careful.”

Daniel’s knees weakened.

Claire quietly pulled a chair behind him.

This time, he sat.

Hannah continued.

“I found something about your dad. I know you hate talking about him, and I know part of you still thinks he left because staying was too hard. He didn’t. Daniel, he didn’t leave you.”

Frank sobbed silently.

Daniel could not look at him.

Hannah’s eyes filled.

“He loved you. Everything I’ve found says he was trying to protect you and your mom. And if I can prove that, maybe I can give you back a piece of yourself you lost when you were eleven.”

Daniel broke then.

Not loudly.

Just folded forward, hand over his eyes, while Hannah kept speaking.

“If anything happens to me, do not blame yourself. You hear me? Do not do that thing where you turn pain into punishment. Raise our girl. Let her stay soft. Let her help people even when the world tells her not to.”

Claire cried silently.

Eleanor did too.

Hannah smiled through tears.

“And Daniel? If a woman named Claire Whitmore ever comes to you, help her. I think she may be the only person who can finish this.”

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Daniel stared at the blank screen.

Then the door opened.

Emma stood there.

Mrs. Alvarez behind her, looking guilty for the first time in her life.

Emma looked at Daniel’s face.

“Dad?”

He opened his arms.

She ran into them.

For a long time, he held her and said nothing.

Then Emma looked at the laptop.

“Was that Mommy?”

Daniel nodded.

Emma’s eyes filled.

“She said to help Claire?”

“Yes.”

Emma turned toward Claire.

“Then we’re still helping.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Hannah had known.

Hannah had chosen.

And now the choice had come back to him.

Claire wiped her face and looked at Frank.

“How do we stop Victor Hale?”

May you like

Frank’s answer was quiet.

“We make him think he has already won.”
