Chapter 10 - George Hart’s Old FriendsCaleb did not call the police first.

George stopped him.
“Not yet.”
“My employee was kidnapped.”
“And the wrong dispatcher leaks one word to Richard’s friends before patrol arrives.”
Caleb stared at his father.
George was already moving, calling numbers from memory, old names Caleb had heard at childhood dinners and never cared enough to remember.
A retired judge.
A former district attorney.
A union lawyer who owed George a favor from 1989.
A private security chief who once ran protection details overseas.
Within twenty minutes, Caleb’s penthouse transformed from luxury residence into war room.
Mason brought security footage.
Ana held Rose while Grace slept in a basket lined with towels.
The pediatrician refused to leave.
Marcus Reed sat at the dining table with the flash drive gripped in both hands.
Neil Danton stared at the floor like a man waiting for prison.
Richard Voss was locked in the library with two security guards outside the door.
Mara was gone.
That hurt Caleb in a way he had no time to examine.
“She’s been with me six years,” he said.
George looked at him. “Then she knows exactly where to wound you.”
The security chief, Elena Graves, connected Mason’s footage to the main screen.
They watched Olivia step into the private elevator with a woman in a navy coat.
“Pause,” Elena said.
She zoomed in on the badge.
“Fake agency crest. Good enough for a lobby. Not good enough for court.”
Caleb’s hands shook.
“Find the car.”
Mason pulled exterior footage.
A white van.
No plates.
Elena leaned closer. “Not no plates. Temporary magnetic cover. There—reflection on the bumper. Partial fleet number.”
George gave her a look.
She smiled grimly. “I’ll make calls.”
Marcus finally spoke. “Mara will take her somewhere controlled. Not Richard’s office. Not any Hart building.”
“Why Mara?” Caleb asked.
Marcus stared at him.
“Because Richard wants the company. Mara wants you.”
Caleb flinched.
George did not.
“She always has,” George said.
Caleb looked at his father.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you said nothing?”
“You were a grown man with a blind spot the size of Manhattan.”
Caleb almost laughed.
Almost.
Marcus inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop Elena provided.
Files appeared.
Maintenance reports.
Emails.
Photos of the forklift.
A voice recording.
Daniel Maren’s voice filled the room, steady and furious.
“This is Daniel Maren, night shift, Warehouse 14. If anything happens to me, check Dock 3 forklift records. Reports are being deleted. Richard Voss knows. Neil knows. Marcus has copies. Olivia, if you ever hear this, I’m sorry I brought trouble home.”
The room went silent.
Olivia’s husband had known he might die.
Caleb gripped the edge of the table.
Another file opened.
An email from Richard to Mara.
Subject: Domestic Staff Issue.
Mara’s reply appeared below.
Do not let this reach C. He gets sentimental when children are involved.
Caleb stepped back as if struck.
George read over his shoulder.
His face hardened into something Caleb had not seen since childhood.
“Now,” George said, “we call the police.”
Elena’s phone rang before Caleb could move.
She answered, listened, then turned.
“We found the van.”
“Where?”
“Old underground garage beneath the Lennox Hotel annex.”
Caleb knew the place.
Hart Industries had bought the vacant hotel two years ago. Redevelopment stalled after zoning disputes.
Controlled.
Private.
Forgotten.
Mara had chosen one of his own properties.
Caleb was already walking.
George followed.
Caleb stopped. “Dad, stay with the babies.”
George’s expression changed.
“I carried you out of a burning grocery store when you were eight months old.”
“That was different.”
“Yes,” George said. “Back then I was younger.”
“Dad—”
George took his cane from Mason, finally accepting it for the first time that night.
Then he looked Caleb dead in the eye.
“That girl is in danger because our name scared her into silence. I am not staying home.”
Caleb nodded once.
Together, father and son left the penthouse.

Behind them, three babies slept under warm blankets for the first time in weeks.
Ahead of them, Olivia screamed inside a room built from Caleb’s neglect.
