Chapter 19 - Ashford HouseI returned to Ashford House three days after giving birth.

Not as Derek’s wife.
Not as the abandoned woman in the hospital hallway.
As bait.
I hated the plan.
Everyone hated the plan.
Which was how I knew it might work.
Arthur had been released to house arrest pending further investigation, which told me everything about power in America. Poor people sat in cells for unpaid fines. Rich men accused of stealing children slept beneath oil paintings.
But he wanted one thing more than legal safety.
Mila.
So I called him.
My voice shook only once.
“I want to talk.”
Arthur was silent for a long moment.
Then he said, “Come home, Claire.”
Home.
The word nearly made me hang up.
Instead, I said, “No police. No lawyers. Just family.”
He liked that.
Men like Arthur always liked words they could weaponize.
Luka listened beside me, jaw clenched.
Mila stayed with Mara and my mother in a secure location unknown even to Derek.
Anna refused to stay behind, so Luka assigned her three guards and told her she was not allowed to improvise.
She immediately improvised by hacking the old Ashford security camera feed from the van.
“I contain multitudes,” she said.
Luka looked tired.
Ashford House sat behind iron gates and winter-dead gardens, all marble columns and old money arrogance. I had once walked through those doors as a nervous bride, thinking I had married into stability.
Now every stone looked like it had teeth.
Arthur met me in the front hall.
He wore a charcoal suit and no ankle monitor visible, though I knew it was there.
“Claire,” he said warmly. “You’ve had quite an ordeal.”
I looked at him.
“You killed my father.”
His smile did not move.
“Grief makes people vulnerable to suggestion.”
“You used a dead doctor’s signature.”
“Administrative errors happen.”
“You stole babies.”
At that, his eyes cooled.
“Careful.”
There he was.
The real man beneath the philanthropy.
“I brought you what you wanted,” I said.
His gaze sharpened.
I held up a folder.
Not Mila.
Never Mila.
Copies of the DNA report.
Arthur’s face changed despite his control.
“Where is the child?”
“Safe.”
“With Moretti?”
“With people who love her.”
He smiled faintly.
“Love is not a legal category.”
“No. But kidnapping is.”
His hand twitched.
Good.
He was angry.
Angry men made mistakes.
“I want Derek safe,” I said.
Arthur laughed softly.
“Derek was always dramatic.”
“He says you’ll kill him.”
“Derek says many things when afraid.”
“Is Senator Ashford his father?”
For the first time, Arthur’s mask cracked.
Only a hairline fracture.
But I saw it.
“You have no idea what you’re touching,” he said.
“I know about the ledger.”
The temperature in the hall seemed to drop.
Arthur stared at me.
Then smiled.
“Derek always was weak.”
Behind my earring, Luka’s voice whispered through the hidden comm.
Keep him talking.
I forced myself not to react.
“I want it,” I said.
Arthur stepped closer.
“Do you know why your father failed, Claire?”
I said nothing.
“Because he believed truth mattered by itself. It doesn’t. Truth needs power. Without power, truth is just noise.”
He reached out and touched a strand of my hair.
I did not flinch.
“You have no power.”
The floor beneath us vibrated softly.
Anna’s voice came through the comm, excited.
Found the chapel door.
I smiled at Arthur.
“You sure?”
May you like
His eyes narrowed.
Then alarms screamed through Ashford House.
