Chapter 15 - The Press Conference TrapCyrus called his own press conference before the police could arrest him.

That was his genius.

He did not run from cameras. He hid inside them.

Standing outside the Whitaker Foundation headquarters, he spoke with grief, dignity, and the calm outrage of an innocent man born for television.

“My brother is suffering,” he told reporters. “His child endured a frightening medical crisis. Now Marcus is being manipulated by a former employee with a troubled history and by law enforcement eager for headlines.”

Emily watched from the hospital suite, face unreadable.

I turned off the television.

She turned it back on.

“No,” she said. “I want to hear what lie I’m inside today.”

Cyrus continued.

“We must ask why a billionaire’s household allowed an unqualified maid to bathe an infant in a kitchen sink. We must ask whether Marcus Whitaker’s grief has compromised his judgment.”

That line spread fastest.

GRIEF COMPROMISED HIS JUDGMENT.

For once, Cyrus had chosen a weapon made from truth.

My grief had compromised me.

It had made me distant. Harsh. Blind.

But it had not poisoned my son.

At noon, my lawyers begged me not to speak again.

At 12:15, Detective Bennett asked me to do exactly that.

“We can use his arrogance,” she said.

“How?”

“Cyrus believes public pressure protects him. Let him think it’s working. Announce that you’re stepping back temporarily from the company and reviewing Zion’s trust structure.”

I understood immediately.

“Make him reach.”

“Exactly.”

Emily looked between us. “You want to bait him.”

Bennett nodded. “Carefully.”

I hated the plan.

Not because it was risky.

Because it required me to appear weak in public.

Then I remembered Grace’s video.

Protect him with people. With love. With listening.

So I listened.

That evening, I stood before cameras again.

“My brother is right about one thing,” I said. “Grief affected me. I trusted the wrong people. I ignored the right ones. For my son’s safety, I am reviewing all family trust arrangements and temporarily stepping back from public duties.”

The reporters erupted.

I raised my hand.

“One more thing. Emily Parker is under my protection, but she is not my employee. She owes my family nothing. We owe her everything.”

Emily watched from the hospital.

Later, she said, “You made yourself look vulnerable.”

“I was vulnerable.”

“No,” she said. “Today you admitted it. That’s different.”

The bait worked faster than expected.

At 1:06 a.m., Cyrus sent an emergency motion through family court requesting temporary oversight of Zion’s trust due to my “publicly admitted instability.”

Attached to the motion was a sealed medical affidavit.

Signed by Dr. Lawrence Vail.

Bennett smiled when she saw it.

“There he is.”

By sunrise, warrants were issued.

But Cyrus was already boarding a private jet.

He almost made it.
