Chapter 11 - The Dead AccountantMiriam Vale died in her townhouse bathtub with a wineglass on the floor and prescription pills beside the sink.

That was what the first report said.
A tragic suicide.
A guilty woman overcome by exposure.
But Detective Harris did not believe it.
Neither did I.
“People connected to your husband have a habit of dying conveniently,” he said.
I sat at the safe house kitchen table, watching Ava through the window as she kicked a soccer ball against the fence. A female officer stood near the back door, pretending not to guard a child.
“Did Miriam leave anything behind?” I asked.
“Her townhouse was wiped clean.”
“Wiped?”
“Computers gone. Filing cabinets empty. Safe open.”
“So someone got there first.”
“Yes.”
“Nathan is in jail.”
Harris nodded.
“Which means he has help.”
The word help crawled across my skin.
That night, I remembered something.
A Christmas party two years earlier. Nathan had introduced me to an older woman near the bar.
“This is Miriam,” he said. “She keeps the boring parts of my life from collapsing.”
Miriam had smiled politely.
But when Nathan walked away, she touched my wrist.
“Be careful with men who hate surprises,” she said.
I laughed then, thinking it was some dry accountant joke.
Now I heard warning in every syllable.
The next morning, a package arrived at the police station addressed to me.
No return address.
Inside was a set of keys and a handwritten note.
I kept one promise. Now keep yours.
There was also a storage unit number.
Detective Harris wanted to wait for a warrant team.
I wanted answers.
The storage facility sat between a tire shop and a shuttered furniture outlet. Rainwater collected in cracked pavement. Unit 114 had a blue padlock.
One of Miriam’s keys opened it.
Inside were twelve plastic bins.
Each labeled with a woman’s name.
ELISE.
DANA.
RACHEL.
CLAIRE.
My bin was the newest.
Detective Harris opened it carefully.
Inside were copies of my bank records, medical history, photographs, emails, and a printed timeline of my daily routine.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope marked:
IF CLAIRE SURVIVES.
My hands shook as Harris passed it to me.
Inside was a letter from Miriam.
Claire,
If you are reading this, Nathan failed, and I am either dead or running.
Your husband did not become dangerous because of money. Money only gave him better tools. He has been protected for years by people who profit from his secrets. I helped build the system that hid him. That is my sin.
But Ava is not his child.
I stopped reading.
The words blurred.
Ava is not his child.
Rachel gasped behind me.
Detective Harris went completely still.
I forced myself to continue.
Nathan knows. That is why he planned to take her. Not because he loves her, but because her real father left her something Nathan can never touch.
There was a second page.
