Chapter 6 - THE RED LEDGERLeo’s treehouse stood at the back of the Mercer estate beneath an enormous oak Arthur had planted when Daniel was born.

Police reached it before Daniel.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Officer Ruiz climbed the ladder herself.

Three minutes later, she descended holding a sealed plastic container.

Inside was a small red notebook.

Arthur had told them exactly where to look: beneath a removable floorboard marked with a carved star.

Daniel stared at the notebook.

Twenty-eight years of secrets might be inside.

But Leo was still missing.

“I don’t care what’s in it,” Daniel said. “Use it to get my son back.”

Ruiz shook her head.

“If Victoria already has the original, she may not trade.”

“Then make her believe this one contains something different.”

Thomas arrived twenty minutes later with federal investigators from the financial-crimes unit.

The moment they opened the ledger, Thomas went silent.

“This is Margaret’s handwriting.”

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Pages listed dates, shell companies, payments, and initials.

S.M.

Stephen Mercer.

M.K.

Martin Keller.

The theft went back decades.

But halfway through the book, another name appeared.

E.C.

Evan Cole.

Ruiz frowned.

“He would’ve been what, twenty?”

“His father,” Thomas said.

Everyone turned.

“Evan Cole Sr. worked security for Stephen.”

The conspiracy had passed from one generation to another.

Then Daniel saw a date.

April 13, 1998.

One day before his mother died.

Beside it:

$150,000 — E.C. — vehicle problem.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Thomas whispered, “Oh God.”

Daniel read it again.

Vehicle problem.

His mother had died when her brakes failed on a wet road.

“Victoria didn’t start this,” Daniel said.

“No,” Thomas answered.

“She found it.”

The realization was worse.

Victoria hadn’t invented the family secret.

She had discovered an old crime and decided to profit from it.

Daniel turned the page.

Recent handwriting appeared beside the older records.

Arthur’s.

He had been investigating.

Modern transfers.

Payments to Keller.

Dr. Pike.

Victoria.

Arthur had connected the past theft to the present scheme.

“He knew,” Daniel whispered.

Thomas nodded.

“Your father found enough to expose all of them.”

“And they locked him away.”

One federal investigator pointed toward a final note.

Second archive — M.M. safe. Leo knows clue.

Daniel frowned.

“M.M.?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Margaret Mercer.”

“My mother’s safe?”

Daniel didn’t know any safe existed.

Then he remembered something Leo had said months ago.

Grandpa showed me Grandma’s secret room.

At the time Daniel assumed Arthur had shown Leo old photographs.

Now—

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became silent.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?”

“Daddy?”

Leo.

Daniel nearly collapsed.

“Leo! Are you okay?”

“I’m scared.”

“I know. Listen to me. I’m coming.”

Victoria took the phone.

“Bring the red ledger.”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“If you hurt him—”

“Save the threats.”

“Where?”

“You know the old boathouse at Lake Harrington.”

Daniel did.

“Come alone.”

“I want to hear Leo again.”

“You heard him.”

“Victoria.”

Silence.

Then Leo’s voice returned.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

Leo whispered quickly.

“Grandma’s roses.”

Victoria grabbed the phone away.

“What did you say?”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Ruiz.

“Grandma’s roses.”

“What does that mean?”

Daniel didn’t know.

Thomas did.

His face had gone white.

“Margaret designed the rose garden.”

“At the estate?”

“Yes.”

Daniel remembered the circular stone garden behind the east wing.

Most roses had died years ago.

Arthur refused to remove it.

“My mother’s safe.”

Thomas nodded.

“It might be there.”

Federal agents began moving.

Daniel stopped them.

“Victoria wants the ledger.”

“We’ll make a controlled exchange,” Ruiz said.

“No.”

“Daniel—”

“If she sees police, she may panic.”

“You are not walking into a kidnapping alone.”

“I’m not asking permission.”

Ruiz stepped closer.

“And I’m telling you that desperate people make unpredictable decisions.”

Daniel stared at the ledger.

“Then give them something predictable.”

The plan took forty minutes.

A duplicate notebook was prepared.

Tracking device inside the spine.

Daniel wore a concealed transmitter.

Officers would stay nearly half a mile away.

Meanwhile another team searched the rose garden.

Daniel drove to Lake Harrington alone.

The old boathouse leaned over dark water.

A storm was approaching.

He entered.

Victoria stood near the far wall.

For the first time since Daniel met her eleven years earlier, she looked exhausted.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Mud on her shoes.

Leo sat on a wooden bench.

Martin Keller stood behind him.

Evan Cole guarded the door.

Daniel’s eyes remained on Leo.

“You okay?”

Leo nodded.

Keller extended a hand.

“Ledger.”

“Let him go.”

“Ledger first.”

Daniel raised it.

Victoria stared hungrily.

“Give it to me.”

“Why?”

Her eyes flashed.

“Because your family destroyed people for decades while pretending to be respectable.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And kidnapping an old man and an eight-year-old is your solution?”

“You think Arthur is innocent?”

“No.”

That caught her off guard.

Daniel continued.

“My father buried things. He protected the company when he should have protected the truth.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Finally.”

“But you weren’t exposing him.”

Her smile faded.

“You were stealing.”

“You have no idea what I was owed.”

“Owed?”

“My father lost everything because of the Mercers.”

Daniel frowned.

Victoria’s eyes filled with old anger.

“His name was Peter Lang.”

Thomas had mentioned that name before.

A contractor ruined in the early 2000s after Mercer Development accused him of fraud.

Peter Lang later took his own life.

Victoria was his daughter.

Suddenly Daniel understood why she had entered their lives.

Eleven years earlier.

A chance meeting at a fundraiser.

Except it hadn’t been chance at all.

“You married me for revenge.”

Victoria said nothing.

Leo began crying quietly.

Daniel’s heart broke.

“Did you ever love me?”

Something flickered in her eyes.

For one second, the ruthless woman disappeared.

“Yes.”

Keller snapped, “Victoria.”

She ignored him.

“Yes, Daniel. That was the problem.”

Daniel looked at their son.

“And Leo?”

Victoria’s expression cracked.

“Don’t.”

“Is he part of your revenge too?”

“No!”

Leo looked up.

Victoria pressed both hands against her temples.

“I never wanted him involved.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“Keller did!”

Martin stiffened.

Daniel saw the fracture.

Good.

He pushed harder.

“You’re protecting the man who helped steal millions from your father’s generation.”

Victoria turned toward Keller.

“He said he could prove Arthur destroyed my father.”

Keller’s voice sharpened.

“Take the ledger.”

Daniel held it tighter.

“Victoria, ask yourself why Keller needs that book destroyed.”

Her face changed.

Daniel continued.

“Because it doesn’t prove my father ruined yours.”

Keller stepped forward.

“Enough.”

“It proves Keller and Stephen Mercer were stealing money long before your father’s company collapsed.”

Victoria stared at Keller.

“No.”

“The people you joined are the people who probably caused what happened to your father.”

Keller pulled something from inside his jacket.

A pistol.

Leo screamed.

Daniel froze.

Keller pointed the weapon at him.

“Put the ledger down.”

Victoria stared.

“Martin…”

“Shut up.”

Daniel slowly placed the notebook on the floor.

Keller smiled.

Then Leo did something nobody expected.

He kicked backward.

His heel struck Keller’s knee.

Keller stumbled.

Victoria shoved Leo away from him.

Daniel lunged.

A gunshot thundered through the boathouse.

Wood exploded beside Daniel’s head.

Then doors burst open from both sides.

“POLICE!”

Keller dropped the weapon.

Cole raised his hands instantly.

Victoria wrapped both arms around Leo.

Daniel scrambled to them.

Leo broke free and ran into his father’s arms.

Daniel held him so tightly the boy squeaked.

“I knew you’d come,” Leo sobbed.

Daniel kissed his hair.

Behind them, police handcuffed Keller and Cole.

Victoria stood alone.

Ruiz approached her.

“Victoria Mercer, turn around.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Tears ran down her face.

“I did love you.”

Daniel held Leo closer.

“I wish that had been enough.”

Ruiz cuffed her.

As officers led Victoria away, Leo whispered into Daniel’s chest:

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“Grandpa told me the rose garden isn’t where Grandma’s safe is.”

Daniel pulled back.

“What?”

Leo wiped his face.

May you like

“He said the roses are the key.”

And suddenly, despite everything that had happened, the Mercer family still had one secret left to uncover.
