Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM OF LIARS

Three days later, Bellandi Maritime’s board gathered in the company headquarters.

The building rose above downtown Manhattan, all black glass and steel. Reporters waited outside because rumors had already spread about Marcus Vale’s arrest, the missing money, and the mysterious return of Elena Bellandi.

The board members expected Lorenzo to resign.

Instead, he entered the room with Elena, Naomi, Calvin, Rosa, and two detectives.

Victoria was not present. She had agreed to testify and had been placed under house arrest.

At the far end of the table sat Adrian Cross, the company’s chief financial officer.

Lorenzo had trusted him for ten years.

Adrian stood.

“Lorenzo, this meeting is not a courtroom.”

“No,” Lorenzo replied. “It is a crime scene.”

A murmur moved around the room.

Adrian’s face remained calm.

“Marcus Vale acted alone. The board has no evidence connecting the company to his personal crimes.”

Calvin placed a stack of ledgers on the table.

“Actually, we have seventeen million reasons to disagree.”

He connected his laptop to the screen.

Bank transfers appeared one after another. Money had been moved through shell companies, then transferred into accounts controlled by Marcus, Victoria, and Adrian.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Lorenzo watched him carefully.

“Your signature appears on thirty-two transfers.”

“Forged.”

“The bank confirmed the digital authorization came from your private office.”

“Marcus had access.”

“Marcus was in prison when the final transfer was approved.”

Adrian said nothing.

Naomi placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Adrian meeting the security officer from the train station two weeks earlier.

The room fell silent.

Adrian’s calm expression disappeared.

“You think this proves something?”

“It proves you knew about the kidnapping,” Lorenzo said.

“I had nothing to do with the child.”

“You paid the man who took her.”

“I paid him to recover company documents.”

“Documents that were inside a collar around my daughter’s neck.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Your father created this entire mess. He built Bellandi Maritime on lies, bribes, and intimidation. Marcus only continued what Matteo started.”

Elena looked at him.

“My husband was corrupt. That does not make you innocent.”

Adrian rose abruptly.

“You have no idea what your family did to people.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Then tell us.”

For a moment, Adrian seemed ready to speak.

Then he smiled.

“You are still protecting the wrong person.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Adrian looked toward Rosa.

“Ask your housekeeper what happened to the original recording.”

Every head turned.

Rosa did not move.

Lorenzo felt the room shift around him.

“Rosa?”

She slowly lowered her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“She carried evidence for your father for years. She knew where the files were hidden. She helped Marcus enter the house.”

“That’s a lie,” Rosa said.

“Is it?”

Adrian pulled out a photograph and placed it on the table.

It showed Rosa meeting Marcus near the service entrance of Bellandi House.

The date was two months before the party.

Lorenzo looked at Rosa.

“Why were you meeting him?”

Rosa’s face crumpled.

“Because he had my grandson.”

The room went silent again.

Adrian had been using the same threat Victoria described.

He had taken Rosa’s grandson’s medical records and threatened to expose a false insurance claim. He forced her to provide access to the house and information about Matteo’s files.

“But Rosa did not help kidnap Isabella,” Elena said.

“No,” Adrian replied. “She tried to warn her.”

Rosa covered her face.

“I saw Victoria take the child toward the nursery. I followed, but Marcus caught me. He told me if I spoke, my grandson would disappear.”

Lorenzo moved toward her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid you would confront them before I had proof.”

The same reason everyone had given him.

Fear had become the foundation of the Bellandi family.

Adrian reached beneath the table.

One of the detectives drew his weapon.

“Do not move,” the detective ordered.

Adrian froze.

A small device fell from his hand.

Calvin picked it up.

“A transmitter.”

Lorenzo recognized it.

The tiny object matched the recording device hidden inside Isabella’s collar.

Adrian had been listening to every conversation in the house.

He had known the collar was found.

He had known about the boathouse.

He had known Elena was alive.

That was why Victoria had been forced to flee.

Adrian was not merely protecting Marcus.

He was controlling everyone.

The doors opened.

Federal agents entered the boardroom.

Adrian looked at Lorenzo.

“You think arresting me will save the company?”

“No,” Lorenzo said. “Telling the truth might.”

The agents handcuffed Adrian and led him away.

The board members remained silent.

Lorenzo turned toward them.

“Bellandi Maritime will survive. But it will not survive as my father built it.”

He placed the final letter on the table.

“We will open every account, publish every investigation, and compensate every person harmed by this family.”

One board member objected.

“That could bankrupt us.”

“Then we will rebuild.”

“Your shareholders will revolt.”

“Then they can leave.”

Lorenzo looked through the glass wall toward the city.

He had spent years believing protecting the company meant protecting the family.

Now he understood the opposite.

A family could survive losing money.

It could not survive losing the truth.
