Chapter 15 - Gertrude Lost Her PearlsGertrude was arrested on a Thursday morning.

Not dramatically.

Not in handcuffs on the front lawn while neighbors watched from behind curtains like in the movies.

She was arrested at the storage facility office after arriving to demand why Unit C-19 had been accessed.

She wore cream slacks, a silk blouse, and her pearls.

When Detective Ramos informed her she was being detained for questioning related to forged documents, identity theft materials, and possession of stolen personal records, she slapped him.

That part did become dramatic.

The pearls broke when the second officer restrained her.

Tiny white beads scattered across the concrete like fake innocence.

I was not there.

Marlene told me afterward with the restrained pleasure of a woman who loved justice but respected procedure.

“She made several statements,” Marlene said.

“What kind?”

“The useful kind.”

Gertrude claimed the documents belonged to the family. She claimed I was mentally unstable. She claimed Brandon knew nothing. Then, when shown the audio files and storage unit contents, she changed strategy and said Brandon had begged her to help because I was abusive.

“Abusive?” I repeated.

“Yes.”

“Against Brandon?”

Marlene looked almost amused.

“Against his potential.”

I stared at her.

“That’s what she said?”

“Direct quote.”

For a moment, I laughed.

I couldn’t help it.

Not because it was funny.

Because some lies are so arrogant they become absurd.

Abusive against his potential.

As if potential paid bills.

As if potential cooked dinner.

As if potential tucked Skylar in while Brandon sat on the couch complaining that life felt unfair.

By afternoon, Brandon had hired a lawyer.

That lawyer sent Marlene a letter so polished it practically wore cufflinks.

It denied everything.

It described Brandon as a devoted father manipulated by “two strong-willed women in conflict.”

I read that line three times.

Me and Gertrude.

As if we were equal storms.

As if I had not been the house they tried to burn down.

Marlene’s response was shorter.

“Your client is advised to preserve all communications, financial records, electronic devices, cloud accounts, and documents related to Charlotte Miller, Skylar Miller, GHB Family Holdings LLC, Ellison Design Build, Pacific Sun Notary, and all attempted financial instruments. Destruction may result in sanctions or criminal referral.”

I loved how lawyers said don’t you dare delete anything.

That evening, Brandon requested another supervised call with Skylar.

She said no.

I documented her refusal and notified the monitor.

Then I made spaghetti.

For the first time in weeks, Skylar and I ate at our own kitchen table.

No seafood.

No wine.

No performance.

Just pasta, garlic bread, and the kind of quiet that doesn’t make you afraid.

Halfway through dinner, Skylar said, “Can we paint my room?”

I looked up.

“Any color you want.”

“Yellow.”

“Yellow?”

She nodded. “Grandma hated yellow.”

“Then yellow it is.”

She smiled for the first time in days.

A real smile.

Small, but hers.

The next morning, I took her to pick paint.

She chose a color called Morning Sun.

I nearly cried in the hardware store.

We spent Saturday painting one wall. Not the whole room. Just one wall behind her bed. She made a mess. I made a bigger one. We ordered pizza and ate it on the floor.

At 8 p.m., the doorbell rang.

Owen checked the camera.

His expression changed.

“Charlotte, stay back.”

On the porch stood Brandon.

But he wasn’t alone.

A woman stood beside him, holding a toddler.

She had blonde hair, tired eyes, and a diaper bag over her shoulder.

My stomach sank.

I knew before he spoke.

Some betrayals arrive with paperwork.

Some arrive holding children.

Brandon looked into the camera.

“Char, please open the door. This is important.”

The woman shifted the toddler on her hip.

Then she looked straight at the camera and said, “My name is Melanie. Brandon told me you two were separated two years ago.”

Skylar appeared behind me in the hallway.

“Mom?”

I couldn’t move.

Brandon closed his eyes.

May you like

Owen muttered, “Oh, you idiot.”

And for once, I agreed with him completely.
