Chapter 8 - Cousin VivienneVivienne Kingsley did not run when accused.

She hosted tea.
By five o’clock, an invitation arrived through Elias’s secure channel.
Mrs. Vivienne Kingsley requests the presence of Mara Kingsley-Mercer at Wren House to discuss matters concerning the child.
Naomi read it aloud and laughed once.
“She has nerve.”
Ruth did not laugh. “Vivienne always had nerve. That was the problem.”
“Who is she really?” I asked.
“My brother’s niece by marriage,” Ruth said. “Not blood, though she made everyone forget that. She married into the family young, became widowed young, and spent thirty years turning grief into influence.”
“She wants Ellie’s trust.”
“She wants recognition,” Elias said. “Bluebird may be how she gets it.”
I went to Wren House with Adrian, Naomi, and two security vehicles behind us.
The mansion sat behind iron gates in a part of the city where every home looked like it had secrets buried beneath the roses.
Vivienne received us in a pale blue salon.
Of course it was blue.
She was in her sixties, beautiful in a preserved, dangerous way. Her silver-blonde hair was swept back. Pearls at her throat. No warmth in her smile.
“Mara,” she said. “You look tired.”
“And you look guilty.”
Naomi’s eyebrow lifted slightly.
Vivienne smiled. “Direct. Your father encouraged that in you. Unfortunate habit for a woman in crisis.”
I sat opposite her. “You paid Celeste Arden.”
“I fund many child specialists.”
“You helped Grant prepare a false custody case.”
“Grant came to me concerned.”
“Grant came to you greedy.”
Her smile faded.
For the first time, I saw the steel underneath.
“You have no idea what Bluebird is.”
“Then explain it.”
Vivienne looked toward the window.
“Your father was sentimental. He believed the Kingsley legacy belonged to blood. He failed to understand that legacy belongs to those capable of carrying it.”
“My three-year-old daughter?”
“Your daughter is a legal trigger, not a leader.”
I felt Naomi shift beside me.
Vivienne leaned forward.
“You are young, grieving, humiliated, and angry. Grant is weak. Celeste is foolish. But I can protect Ellie from scandal.”
“By taking control of her assets.”
“By managing what she cannot.”
“And what do I get?”
Vivienne smiled again.
“Peace.”
I stood.
“No.”
Her eyes cooled.
“No?”
“You heard me.”
Vivienne rose slowly. “Then you should know Grant is not your only problem. Your father hid dangerous things inside that archive. Men have gone to prison for less than what Bluebird contains. Men have died for less.”
“Was that a threat?”
“It was family history.”
As I turned to leave, she said one more thing.
“Ask Ruth what happened to the last Bluebird child.”
Ruth stopped walking.
May you like
Vivienne’s smile returned.
“Oh,” she said softly. “She never told you?”
