Chapter 9 - The Bloodline ContractArturo Serrano arrived at the courthouse wearing a navy suit, a silver tie, and the confident expression of a man who had never entered a room he did not expect to own.

Reporters shouted his name.

He smiled for them.

Not warmly.

Strategically.

Valeria stood inside the protected witness hallway watching him through tinted glass. Mateo slept in a stroller beside her, guarded by police and two nurses. Sofía sat nearby with her arm in a sling, smoke still roughening her voice. Nicolás stood at the far end of the hall speaking to prosecutors.

For once, no one looked in control.

Arturo Serrano was not just Valeria’s uncle. He was the architect of the Serrano-Velasco alliance, the man who had negotiated the engagement, the business holdings, the inheritance structure, and the private council’s approval of Mateo as heir.

Sofía had learned the word council now.

It was not official. It had no legal authority.

That made it more dangerous.

Old families. Old money. Old crimes dressed as tradition.

Arturo had wanted Mateo raised according to the old ways. Leonor had wanted control. Together, they had found common ground in a baby’s suffering.

But prosecutors needed more than horror.

They needed motive.

They found it in the bloodline contract.

The document surfaced from Marisol’s hidden files. She had photographed it one night after Claudia left it on the silver tray by mistake.

The agreement stated that if Mateo were deemed “medically fragile” or “emotionally dependent,” custody decisions could be influenced by the council until Nicolás remarried within approved family lines.

Approved family lines meant Valeria.

Or another Serrano woman.

Valeria read the document three times before she spoke.

“So they made him sick to force Nicolás back into the arrangement?”

Sofía said gently, “And to make everyone believe Mateo needed constant family supervision.”

Valeria’s lips trembled. “My uncle told me I was failing because Mateo cried for everyone. He said if I were a real mother, I would calm him.”

Nicolás had heard. His face hardened.

Valeria looked at him. “I believed him.”

“You were exhausted,” Sofía said.

“I was willing to marry Nicolás again just to make them stop blaming me.”

Nicolás turned from the window. “I would have done it.”

Valeria looked at him.

He did not soften the truth.

“If someone had told me marrying you would help Mateo, I would have signed anything.”

“That was their plan,” Sofía said.

The brutality of it filled the hallway.

They had turned love into leverage.

Court began at ten.

Leonor appeared by video from custody, wearing pearls and a black dress. She looked less like an accused woman than a queen inconvenienced by peasants.

Arturo sat in person with his attorneys, smiling slightly.

The first hours were legal fog. Motions. Objections. Attempts to exclude the camera footage. Claims that the videos were manipulated. Claims that Sofía had planted evidence. Claims that Valeria was emotionally unstable. Claims that Nicolás was unfit due to criminal associations.

On that last point, the courtroom shifted.

Nicolás did not deny the shadows around his name.

Instead, he stood.

His attorney whispered urgently, but Nicolás raised one hand.

The judge looked over her glasses. “Señor Velasco, you have counsel.”

“I know.”

“Then sit.”

“No.”

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

The judge’s eyes narrowed. “Are you intending to make a statement against legal advice?”

“Yes.”

Sofía’s heart began to pound.

Nicolás looked at Mateo, then at the judge.

“For years, people have feared my name,” he said. “Some for good reason. I will answer for what I have done when this court asks me to. But today, this case is not about my reputation. It is about a child who was harmed because everyone in my world believed family power mattered more than truth.”

Leonor’s face on the screen hardened.

Nicolás continued.

“My mother abused me when I was an infant using the same methods used on my son. A nurse named Isabel Reyes tried to expose it. My father buried her report. She died before her truth was heard.”

Sofía closed her eyes.

The courtroom went silent.

Nicolás’s voice cracked once, but he did not stop.

“Her daughter saved my son because she did what my family punished her mother for doing. She looked at a crying child and told the truth.”

Reporters wrote furiously.

Arturo’s smile vanished.

Nicolás turned toward the prosecution table. “Release every family record connected to this. Every account. Every payment to doctors. Every council communication. I waive privilege where the law allows. If my house has rot, tear it open.”

Leonor rose on the video screen. “Nicolás!”

He did not look at her.

The judge ordered a recess.

Chaos erupted.

Outside the courtroom, Arturo cornered Valeria near the witness room.

Sofía saw him before security did.

“You stupid girl,” he hissed. “Do you know what you are destroying?”

Valeria lifted her chin, but her hands shook. “A cage.”

“You think they will love you when this is over? Nicolás will run to the nurse. The child already cries for her. You will have nothing.”

The words struck exactly where he intended.

Sofía stepped forward. “Leave her alone.”

Arturo turned slowly. “Ah. The saint from the public hospital.”

Nicolás appeared behind him.

Arturo’s smile returned. “Careful, Velasco. Cameras everywhere.”

Nicolás stopped.

The old Nicolás would have broken him.

The new Nicolás stood still.

Sofía saw the effort cost him.

Arturo leaned closer. “Your father understood power. Shame you inherited his weakness.”

Nicolás’s eyes went dark.

Then Valeria spoke.

“No. His father hid behind power. Nicolás is doing what none of you had the courage to do.”

Arturo looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.

She reached into her purse and removed her phone.

“I recorded everything you just said.”

His face changed.

Valeria pressed send.

“To the prosecutor,” she said.

Arturo lunged.

Nicolás moved between them, but he did not strike.

Security tackled Arturo to the floor.

As officers cuffed him, he laughed breathlessly.

“You think this ends with court? The council will never allow that nurse near the heir.”

Sofía felt a chill.

Nicolás looked at Arturo.

“The council is finished.”

Arturo smiled through blood on his lip.

“Then why is Mateo gone?”

Every face turned.

The stroller stood near the witness room.

Empty.
