Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT ELEANOR DIEDThe doors closed behind Victoria.

But her final words remained inside the house like smoke.

Ask Margaret what really happened the night Maya was born.

Richard turned toward Eleanor’s attorney.

Margaret Ellison had gone pale.

That was enough.

Richard handed Maya gently to Mrs. Gable, who held her as if holding something sacred.

Then he faced Margaret.

“What did she mean?”

Margaret looked older in the lamplight. For years, she had been composed, precise, loyal to law before emotion. But now her hands trembled around the leather folder.

“Richard,” she said softly, “not tonight.”

“Tonight.”

His voice cracked.

“I just found out my daughter was being terrorized in my own home. My wife has been arrested. My security chief was bribed. Do not tell me there is another lie standing between me and my child.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Then she opened the folder again.

“Eleanor did not die only from childbirth complications.”

Richard’s face went white.

“What?”

“The delivery was difficult. That part is true. But afterward, Eleanor began to stabilize. The hemorrhage was controlled. Her vitals improved.”

Richard felt the room move beneath him.

“I was told she crashed suddenly.”

“She did,” Margaret whispered. “After receiving an injection that was later removed from the medication log.”

Richard stared at her.

“No.”

“I hired an independent medical investigator after Eleanor’s nurse contacted me. The nurse was frightened. She believed someone had accessed the postpartum suite without authorization.”

Richard gripped the edge of the desk.

“Who?”

“We never proved it.”

His voice dropped to something dangerous.

“Who?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Conrad Vance had business interests tied to Sterling Logistics before your marriage to Victoria. He had been trying to force a port partnership with you for years. Eleanor opposed him. Strongly.”

Richard’s mind raced backward.

Conrad at charity events.

Conrad at board dinners.

Conrad smiling beside Eleanor months before Maya’s birth.

Victoria had not entered his life by accident.

None of it had been accident.

“Are you saying Conrad had something to do with my wife’s death?”

“I’m saying Eleanor suspected him of trying to compromise your company before she died. She gave me documents. She told me if anything happened to her, I was to protect Maya first.”

Richard’s eyes filled with rage and grief.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were broken,” Margaret said, tears finally falling. “And because I had no proof strong enough to survive Conrad Vance’s lawyers.”

Richard looked toward the front door, where Victoria had disappeared.

Victoria knew.

Or she had guessed.

Either way, she had used Eleanor’s death like a weapon.

Suddenly Maya woke in Mrs. Gable’s arms and began crying.

“Daddy,” she sobbed.

Richard crossed the room and took her back immediately.

“I’m here.”

Maya pressed her face against him.

Then, in a sleepy whisper, she said, “Lady sings.”

Richard froze.

“What lady?”

Maya pointed toward the hallway.

“Mommy lady.”

Everyone went silent.

Mrs. Gable looked confused.

Richard’s heart pounded.

“Maya,” he whispered, “where did you see Mommy lady?”

Maya rubbed her eyes.

“On wall.”

Richard looked toward the private gallery.

Eleanor’s portrait hung there.

But Maya shook her head.

“No. Wall open.”

Margaret’s face changed.

“Richard,” she whispered.

May you like

“What?”

“Eleanor had a hidden safe installed before Maya was born.”
