Chapter 18 - The HearingThe courthouse steps were packed before sunrise.

Celeste Beaumont arrived in a black dress with no jewelry, her hair pinned simply, her face pale but composed. She looked less like a disgraced socialite and more like a woman wronged by powerful people.

It was deliberate.

Reporters shouted.

“Celeste, did Helena Ashcroft frame you?”

“Were you threatened by the Ashcrofts?”

“Did Damian know about the Voss cover-up?”

Celeste paused just long enough for every camera to find her.

“I trusted the wrong family,” she said softly.

Then she walked inside.

Elara watched from the back seat of Damian’s car, disgust rising in her throat.

“She’s good.”

Damian sat beside her.

“She’s desperate.”

“Same thing, in court.”

He looked at her.

“You don’t have to testify today.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Elara—”

“She made my father’s name part of her defense. I’m going in.”

Helena, seated across from them, nodded once.

“She has earned the choice.”

Inside the courtroom, Celeste’s lawyer moved like a blade.

Priya Kade did not deny that Celeste had behaved badly. That would have been impossible. Instead, she wrapped the bad behavior in fear.

“My client was manipulated into a family war,” Priya argued. “She discovered Helena Ashcroft possessed evidence damaging not only to deceased Lord Edmund Ashcroft, but to herself. Hours later, my client was publicly humiliated in a staged confrontation led by a servant secretly connected to the old scandal.”

Elara felt the word servant land on her skin.

Damian’s attorney objected.

The judge allowed the argument to continue narrowly.

Priya turned toward Helena.

“Mrs. Ashcroft, did you hide evidence that could have cleared Thomas Voss?”

Helena sat in the witness chair, small beneath the courtroom lights.

“Yes.”

The room stirred.

Priya’s eyes gleamed.

“For fifteen years?”

“Yes.”

“Did you benefit from that silence?”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

Helena answered.

“I survived because of it.”

Priya smiled sympathetically.

“That was not my question.”

Helena looked at her.

“Then ask a better one.”

A ripple moved through the courtroom.

Priya’s smile cooled.

“You allowed a dead man’s family to suffer disgrace while your estate remained protected.”

Helena’s hands trembled.

“Yes.”

Celeste lowered her eyes, performing sorrow.

Priya said, “So when my client threatened to reveal your secret, you had motive to destroy her.”

Helena looked at Celeste.

“No. When your client threatened to reveal my secret, I had motive to confess it.”

The courtroom quieted.

Priya paused.

Then Elara was called.

She walked to the witness stand feeling every camera, every whisper, every old shame.

Priya approached gently.

“Miss Voss, you hated the Ashcroft family when you came to work at Aurelia Palace, didn’t you?”

“I distrusted them.”

“Because of your father.”

“Yes.”

“Because you believed he was framed.”

“I hoped he was.”

Priya tilted her head.

“And you inserted yourself into an elderly woman’s life, encouraged her paranoia, collected private documents, and physically restrained my client in front of hundreds of people.”

Elara looked at Celeste.

“I stopped your client from striking Mrs. Ashcroft.”

Priya smiled.

“Or you created exactly the image needed to destroy her.”

Elara turned back.

“Celeste created that image when she raised her hand.”

The judge looked down to hide a reaction.

Priya’s voice sharpened.

“You are not a bodyguard. You are not police. You are not family. Who gave you the right to touch my client?”

Elara leaned toward the microphone.

“The old woman she was about to hit.”

Silence.

Then Priya made her mistake.

“Miss Voss, isn’t it true you wanted revenge?”

Elara thought of her mother. Her father. The schoolyard whispers. The job rejections. The shame.

“Yes,” she said.

Priya smiled triumphantly.

Elara continued.

“But revenge would have been letting Celeste become an Ashcroft and watching this family eat itself alive. Justice was stopping her hand.”

The courtroom went dead still.

Celeste’s face tightened.

Then Marianne Holt rose with new evidence.

“Your Honor, we have recovered additional audio from Thomas Voss’s cassette.”

Priya objected immediately.

The judge listened privately.

Then he allowed one portion.

The courtroom speakers crackled.

Thomas Voss’s damaged voice filled the room.

“Helena… if you live… protect my girls first… truth later… promise me…”

Elara stopped breathing.

Helena covered her mouth.

The tape continued.

“My wife… my Elara… keep them away from Edmund… let them hate me if they have to… just keep them alive…”

The audio cut.

Elara could not move.

Her father had chosen her life over his name.

Helena had obeyed him.

Not perfectly.

Not without failure.

But the silence had not been cowardice alone.

It had been a promise.

Celeste knew she had lost the room.

Her face hardened.

Then the courtroom doors burst open.

A clerk rushed in with a note for the judge.

The judge read it.

His expression changed.

He looked at Damian.

“Mr. Ashcroft, there has been an incident at Aurelia Palace.”

Damian stood.

May you like

“What incident?”

The judge said, “The hidden room is gone.”
