Chapter 10 - The Public LieThe DeMarco family struck first.

At 8:00 a.m., every major gossip site published the same story.

VIVIAN DEMARCO SMEARED BY FORMER MAID CLAIMING MORETTI BLOODLINE.

The articles called me unstable. Opportunistic. A disgruntled employee. They said I had staged the ballroom incident to extort Vincent. They included old photos of me from social media, cropped to make me look sloppy, lonely, desperate.

One headline said: MAID OR MANIPULATOR?

I read that one twice.

Then I closed the laptop.

Vincent stood behind me in the study, jaw tight.

“I can shut them down.”

“No,” I said.

He looked surprised.

“Let them talk.”

“Isabella—”

“People believed Vivian when she said I attacked her because she was rich and beautiful and I was staff. They will believe these articles for the same reason.”

“That is exactly why we respond.”

“We will.” I turned to him. “But not like victims.”

Ms. Hale arrived carrying three folders.

“Good,” she said. “Because I brought options.”

The first option was legal silence. File claims privately. Seek injunctions. Protect the Moretti name.

The second was controlled denial. Say nothing about DNA. Focus on Vivian’s assault.

The third was full disclosure.

Release the video. Release the tape transcript. Release the forged settlement. Announce the DNA results. Name Teresa Romano publicly.

Vincent looked at me.

“It is your life.”

I looked down at my hands.

My mother had hidden to protect me.

Could I undo that and still honor her?

Then I remembered Vivian’s voice.

She’s a maid, Vincent.

I remembered Carlo.

People like Teresa don’t leave records.

And I knew.

“Full disclosure,” I said.

Salvatore closed his eyes.

Vincent nodded once.

“Then we do it properly.”

At noon, Belladonna House held a press conference.

Not in the ballroom. Vincent refused to let that room frame the story.

Instead, we stood in the servants’ chapel.

Blue walls. Olive branch above the door. My mother’s portrait behind us.

Reporters crowded the hall outside, cameras raised. For once, people in expensive suits had to stand where staff once waited.

Vincent spoke first.

“Last night, Isabella Teresa Romano entered my home as a temporary staff member. She was publicly mistreated by my former fiancée, Vivian DeMarco. During that incident, a family locket identified Miss Romano as a person connected to my family’s hidden history.”

Camera shutters exploded.

He continued.

“Today, a legal DNA test confirmed that Isabella Romano is my half-sister, the daughter of Lorenzo Moretti and Teresa Romano.”

The room erupted.

Questions flew.

Vincent raised one hand.

Silence returned.

“Teresa Romano was not an opportunist. She was not a liar. Evidence now shows she was threatened, abducted, and forced into disappearance while protecting her infant daughter. For twenty-eight years, her name was buried under forged documents and family lies.”

He turned to me.

My turn.

Every camera shifted.

My mouth went dry.

I touched the locket.

“My mother cleaned rooms,” I said. “She sewed dresses. She raised me alone. She never asked anyone for revenge. She only asked me to survive.”

The chapel blurred, but I kept going.

“Last night, I was struck because someone thought a uniform made me powerless. My mother wore uniforms too. So did many women who kept this house alive. This story is not about a maid becoming important because powerful blood was found. My mother was important before anyone admitted whose child I was.”

Vincent’s eyes lowered.

Reporters stopped typing.

I looked straight into the cameras.

“My name is Isabella Teresa Romano. I am Lorenzo Moretti’s daughter. But I am Teresa Romano’s child.”

The clip went viral within an hour.

Not because of scandal.

Because of the moment near the end, when Rosa stepped into frame behind me. Then another housekeeper. Then a cook. Then two gardeners. Quietly, one by one, the staff of Belladonna House stood in the chapel doorway.

Behind the daughter of a maid.

That image did what lawyers could not.

It made people understand.

By evening, the headlines changed.

THE MAID WHO WOULD NOT BOW.

TERESA ROMANO’S DAUGHTER SPEAKS.

VIVIAN DEMARCO SILENT AFTER BOMBSHELL REVEAL.

Vivian was not silent for long.

At midnight, she called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But some doors only close after the last truth enters.

Her voice was raw.

“Isabella.”

“What do you want?”

A pause.

“My father is going to run.”

I stood.

“Where?”

“I don’t know. But he took the tape copies he still had. And there’s something else.”

“What?”

May you like

Vivian began to cry.

“The person who told him your mother survived is still inside Belladonna House.”
