Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY INCUBATORNoah’s incubator was empty.

For three seconds, Claire’s mind refused to understand what her eyes saw.

The warm light glowed.

The monitor still blinked.

A tiny blanket lay folded inside the plastic walls.

But her son was gone.

Then the world split open.

Claire screamed so violently that Ethan nearly dropped to his knees holding her.

Nurses rushed.

Security shouted.

Margaret froze in the doorway, one hand pressed to her chest.

Vanessa moved first.

She grabbed the nearest nurse by the shoulders.

“Who took him?”

“I don’t know! A doctor ordered transfer for emergency imaging—”

“What doctor?” Ethan demanded.

The nurse shook.

“Dr. Mercer.”

Claire’s mind cut through the panic.

“There is no Dr. Mercer on Noah’s team.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“Harlan used a false transfer.”

Ethan set Claire into a wheelchair despite her struggling.

“Find the exits,” he barked at security.

Margaret turned on the hospital administrator arriving behind them.

“Lock down every floor.”

The administrator stammered.

“We need legal authority—”

Margaret’s voice turned lethal.

“My grandson has been abducted. Find your authority before I buy this hospital and fire you from it.”

Claire would have laughed in another life.

Now she could only whisper, “Noah.”

Ethan knelt in front of her.

His hands framed her face.

“Claire, look at me.”

“I can’t breathe.”

“Look at me.”

She did.

His eyes were terrified, but steady.

“I will find him.”

“You promised that before,” she whispered. “You promised you’d always find your way back.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I did. And I failed.”

Claire sobbed.

Ethan leaned closer.

“I won’t fail him.”

Vanessa returned from the nurses’ station holding a tablet.

“I found camera footage.”

“How?” Margaret asked.

Vanessa ignored her.

On the screen, a man in scrubs pushed a neonatal transport unit down the corridor. His face was partly covered by a mask. But behind him, just for one second, a white-haired man appeared near the elevator.

Harlan.

Claire gripped the wheelchair arms.

“Where did they go?”

Vanessa rewound.

“The elevator stopped at the underground parking level.”

Ethan stood.

Daniel’s voice came from behind them.

“He won’t use the main exit.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood between two officers, one hand cuffed to his hospital bed rail. His shoulder was bandaged from the records room.

Claire’s grief sharpened into rage.

“You.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“I didn’t take the baby.”

“But you helped the man who did.”

“Yes.”

The word was quiet.

No excuse.

No performance.

Just ruin.

Ethan stepped toward him.

Daniel looked at his brother.

“Harlan has old tunnels under the hospital. Service routes from when Whitmore funded the east wing. Father showed us once.”

Ethan stared.

“I don’t remember.”

“I do,” Daniel said. “You were bored. I was paying attention because I was always looking for ways out.”

Margaret’s face twisted.

“Daniel—”

“Don’t.” He looked at Claire. “I did terrible things. But I won’t let him take a newborn.”

Claire wanted to hate him too much to listen.

But Noah was gone.

Hate could wait.

“Where is the tunnel?” she asked.

Daniel looked at the officers.

“Uncuff me.”

Ethan laughed coldly.

“No.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Then your son disappears while you argue morality.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

Ethan understood.

He turned to the officers.

“Uncuff him.”

Margaret protested.

Ethan did not look away from Daniel.

“If he runs,” Ethan said, “shoot him.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Always nice being family.”

They moved through the service stairwell, Vanessa leading with the tablet, Daniel giving directions, Margaret calling private security, and Ethan pushing Claire’s wheelchair because she refused to stay behind.

Three levels underground, they found a maintenance door sealed with an old Whitmore crest.

Daniel entered a code.

The lock clicked.

He looked at Ethan.

“Your birthday.”

Ethan frowned.

Daniel’s smile faded.

“Of course he used yours.”

Beyond the door, the tunnel stretched into darkness.

From somewhere ahead came a sound.

Small.

Weak.

A baby crying.

Claire stood from the wheelchair.

Ethan caught her.

“Noah,” she whispered.

May you like

Then Harlan’s voice echoed through the tunnel.

“One more step, Ethan, and your son becomes another family secret.”
