Chapter 9 - The Last RecordingThe memory card from sedan 42 held several damaged video files.

An examiner recovered part of the final recording. Torres invited Claire, Leah, and me to hear only the portion relevant to Daniel. She warned us that we could leave at any time.

I wanted to know what happened to my son. I also feared that the recording would replace every memory I had of his voice.

The footage began in a parking lot near Unit 17. Daniel got into the sedan carrying a flat metal case. He called Claire. Her voicemail answered.

“I’ve got the files,” he said. “I’m sorry I made you feel alone in this. I’ll be home after I see Dad.”

The recording cut. When it resumed, Daniel was driving along a road north of town. Headlights followed in the rear camera. He said the vehicle had been behind him since the storage facility.

There was a sound from the car, then Daniel breathing sharply. He tried to slow down.

The video broke apart before the end.

Torres stopped it.

Claire stood and walked to the window. I stayed seated. Daniel’s voice had filled the room for less than a minute. I wanted to hear him say he was coming home again, even though I knew what came next.

The recording supported the evidence of a second vehicle. A mechanical examination of the recovered silver sedan gave investigators more: damage to its brake system that had been concealed in the original fleet inspection.

Torres did not tell us more than she could confirm. Gideon had been questioned again. With the vehicle evidence and Elliot’s statement before him, he had begun to talk.

He admitted taking Daniel’s SUV from Ben’s garage after the crash and leaving it in the ravine. He said Celeste had instructed him to intercept Daniel and take the case. He also admitted arranging for Daniel to receive sedan 42. Gideon claimed he had meant to frighten Daniel into stopping and had not expected the car to fail.

The investigators would determine his responsibility. To me, he had already said enough to explain why my son never came home.

Celeste was located that evening. She had arranged an emergency meeting with two foundation board members and a donor at a private club. According to Torres, she hoped they would help her challenge the audit and give her access to foundation funds while she fought the accusations.

Instead, the board members called their lawyer. The lawyer called the police.

Celeste was arrested in the club’s conference room. She tried to tell the officers I had ordered the car swap. Torres had the complete meeting recording, the fleet records, Gideon’s statement, and the accounts Elliot had copied. They took her statement and led her away.

I heard the news at Harbor House. Claire was there with Ava, reviewing a list of families the auditors had finally found in the application files.

For a moment, Claire said nothing. Then she sat down.

“Is Emma with Rosa?” she asked.

“Yes. At the hotel.”

“Let’s go to her.”

On the way, Claire asked me to play Daniel’s voicemail again. Torres had given her a copy of that first, undamaged portion.

We sat in the parked car outside the hotel and listened.

I’m sorry I made you feel alone in this.

Claire pressed a hand to her mouth.

“He was coming to you,” she said.

“I know.”

“He wanted you to believe him.”

I looked at the bright hotel windows. “I wish I had.”

Claire let the recording finish. Then she opened the car door.

Emma was waiting upstairs in pajamas, building a crooked tower of pillows with Rosa. She knocked it down when she saw Claire and ran to her.

“Are you home?” Emma asked.

“I’m right here.”

“Can we go to our real house soon?”

“Yes,” Claire said. “We’ll make sure it’s ready.”

Emma looked over her mother’s shoulder at me. “Grandpa can visit.”

May you like

“I’d like that,” I said.

She held out her hand, and I crossed the room to join them.
