Chapter 11 - WHEN EMILY DISAPPEAREDFor five days, we lived by rules.

Emily did not go anywhere without me, Olivia, or the security consultant Grace recommended.
Her school was notified. The principal cried when I explained, then turned into a general preparing for siege. Pickup lists were changed. Passwords were created. Photos of Rebecca, Patricia, Henry, and Dr. Celia were given to office staff.
Emily hated the password system.
Not because she didn’t understand it.
Because she understood it too well.
“The password means bad people can look nice,” she said.
I had no argument.
On the sixth day, I made the mistake of believing precautions were enough.
Emily wanted to return to school.
