Chapter 12 - The Second RattleVictoria disappeared before anyone reached the hallway.

By the time Agent Pike’s team swept the second floor, the rose suite was empty, the balcony door open, and a cream coat lay folded on the bed like shed skin.

Hale pretended surprise beautifully.

Elara watched him from the doorway.

“Your goddaughter is resourceful,” she said.

“My goddaughter is traumatized.”

“Your goddaughter just escaped federal agents.”

“Fear makes people irrational.”

“Victoria is not afraid.”

Hale looked at her.

“No,” he said softly. “She is worse.”

That was the first honest thing he had said.

Julian stood beside the nursery window, Leo in his arms. The baby’s eyes were fixed on the mobile above his crib, tracking little silver stars.

Agent Pike entered with a tablet.

“We recovered the drive from the ballroom compartment,” she said. “Most of it is encrypted. The accessible files include shell companies, foundation transfers, and references to something called GRAVITY.”

Julian said, “Gravity Holdings.”

Pike nodded. “A laundering structure, maybe more. Your father appears to have documented payments moving through charitable programs into political influence networks.”

Hale smiled faintly. “Careful, Agent. Ambition is not treason.”

“No,” Pike said. “But foreign money funneled into domestic campaigns is.”

The senator’s smile faded.

Elara looked at Julian.

There it was.

Gravity of Treason.

The scandal was no longer a family nightmare. It was national.

Agent Pike continued. “But the drive references an audio confession stored separately. Without it, Hale can argue Alexander Sterling created the records to protect himself or frame political rivals.”

“The rattle,” Elara said.

“Yes.”

Julian looked sick. “And Victoria has it.”

Hale leaned against the wall with theatrical weariness. “If Victoria has any such item, I recommend finding her before she harms herself.”

Elara said, “Or before she sells it.”

Everyone turned.

Elara walked to the crib and gently touched the mobile.

“Victoria does not want truth. She wants ownership. She wanted to be mother of the heir, owner of the narrative, chosen daughter of Hale, queen of Sterling. Now she has the one object everyone needs.”

Julian whispered, “What will she do?”

Elara looked toward the city beyond the estate windows.

“She will invite the highest bidder.”

Agent Pike’s phone rang.

She listened, then cursed under her breath.

“What?” Julian demanded.

Pike looked up.

“Victoria just released a video statement.”

A screen flickered on.

Victoria appeared seated before a fireplace, dressed in black now, no diamonds, her face pale and bruised with makeup placed just subtly enough to look real.

“My name is Victoria Sterling,” she said. “If anything happens to me, it is because I tried to protect my son from the people who stole him.”

Julian’s grip tightened around Leo.

Victoria continued.

“My husband’s family has hidden crimes for decades. Senator Hale knows some of them. So does the woman pretending to be a maid in my house. But none of them will tell you the truth about Camille.”

Elara’s breath stopped.

Victoria lifted the silver rattle.

“This will.”

The video ended.

Within seconds, it was everywhere.

Agent Pike snapped, “Trace it.”

An analyst shook his head. “Uploaded through multiple relays. No source yet.”

Hale’s face was unreadable.

Julian turned on him. “Where would she go?”

“How would I know?”

“Because you trained her.”

Hale’s eyes sharpened. “I trained her to survive rooms your family built.”

“And now?”

“Now she will burn every room.”

Elara stepped closer to Hale.

“Where did Victoria feel safest?”

He looked at her.

For once, he seemed tired.

“Onstage.”

Julian frowned. “What?”

Hale said, “As a child, Victoria adored theaters. Concert halls. Anywhere people watched her and could not look away.”

The old Sterling concert hall.

Of course.

Julian moved immediately.

Agent Pike stopped him. “You are not going.”

“My wife has evidence that may destroy my family and free yours. She also tried to kill the child in my arms.”

“All the more reason to let federal agents handle it.”

Elara said, “She won’t speak to agents.”

Pike looked at her. “And she’ll speak to you?”

“No. She’ll perform for me.”

Julian handed Leo to Mrs. Vale, who had been standing silently near the door.

The old housekeeper took the baby with trembling reverence.

Julian kissed Leo’s forehead.

Then he looked at Elara.

“We go together.”

Elara studied him.

“You may hear things you cannot forgive.”

“I already have.”

“No,” she said. “You have heard accusations. Truth is heavier.”

Julian opened the nursery door.

“Then I will carry it.”

They left the Sterling estate under flashing lights, past reporters shouting questions, past agents trying to stop them, past the broken marble where a piano had once judged the room in silence.

Across the city, the old concert hall waited.

And inside it, Victoria Sterling wound the silver rattle with one delicate finger and smiled at the sound of Camille Hale’s trapped voice beginning to play.
