Chapter 12 - THE DOG WHO CAME HOME

Bruno survived.
The bullet had struck his protective vest, but the impact reopened his surgical wound and fractured two ribs.
Clara refused to leave the veterinary clinic.
Matteo sat outside the recovery room for three days, refusing to sleep.
On the fourth morning, Bruno opened his eyes.
Clara leaned over him.
“You frightened me.”
Bruno slowly lifted his head and placed it against her chest.
Matteo stood in the doorway.
“He is stubborn.”
“He learned from you.”
“I was going to say he learned from you.”
“You are becoming predictable.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
It was the first time Clara had seen him smile without sadness behind it.
The investigation began immediately.
Anton’s hidden accounts were opened. His companies were exposed. His guards were arrested. Evidence from the trust connected him to disappearances, illegal weapons, and the deaths of people who had attempted to leave his organization.
Matteo turned everything over.
He did not destroy the ledger.
He did not silence witnesses.
He gave the police access to the hidden rooms, the tunnels, and the records his father had buried.
Some investigators still believed Matteo was guilty of more than he admitted.
He did not complain.
“I inherited the house,” he told Clara one evening. “I cannot inherit innocence.”
“You can choose what happens next.”
He looked at her.
“Do you still intend to leave?”
Clara glanced at Bruno, sleeping beside the fireplace.
“I do not know.”
Matteo nodded.
He did not ask her to stay.
That made the answer harder.
Evelyn moved into a cottage on the far edge of the estate. Clara visited her each morning. Their relationship was painful, complicated, and real.
Evelyn had not been perfect.
She had hidden the truth.
She had trusted the wrong people.
But she had loved Clara enough to risk everything.
Luca remained at Moretti House while investigators confirmed his identity. He had no interest in the empire. Instead, he helped Daniel locate the people Anton had imprisoned or threatened.
The estate changed.
The east wing was opened and renovated. The hidden rooms were sealed. The chapel was rebuilt as a memorial for the people harmed by the Moretti family.
Clara used part of the trust to create a rescue center for abused animals and children escaping violent homes.
She named it The Bruno House.
Bruno hated the dedication ceremony and slept beneath the main table.
Matteo stood beside Clara while reporters photographed the new sign.
One reporter asked whether Clara was now the “Moretti heiress.”
Clara answered clearly.
“No. I am Clara Hayes. The money may have come from the Moretti family, but I decide what it becomes.”
Matteo looked at her with open pride.
That night, Clara found him alone in the courtyard.
The same courtyard where she had accidentally bathed Bruno.
The same place where everything had begun.
“You are leaving early tomorrow,” Matteo said.
“To visit Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“Are you asking me to stay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“I am asking you to come back if you want to.”
She studied him.
“That is different.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I finally understand that love is not a locked door.”
Clara’s throat tightened.
“You love me?”
Matteo looked at her.
“I have loved you since the night you sat on the floor beside Bruno and told him he was not angry, only afraid.”
“That was six days after I started working here.”
“I know.”
“You barely knew me.”
“I knew you did not run when everyone else did.”
“That is not enough to love someone.”
“No,” he said. “But it was enough to begin.”
Clara did not answer.
Matteo did not move closer.
May you like
He waited.
Finally, Clara stepped toward him.
