Chapter 1 - The Sound at the DoorLily’s knees scraped across the marble as she crawled toward the baby.

Every inch felt like fire.
Serena’s heel pressed harder into her abdomen, pinning her down as if she were something dirty on the floor. Above them, the crystal chandelier glittered coldly, casting broken points of light across the foyer of Blackwood mansion. Everything about the house was beautiful. Everything about that moment was monstrous.
Baby Ethan’s cries had become thin, breathless whimpers.
That terrified Lily more than the screaming.
A screaming child was still fighting.
A quiet child was surrendering.
“Please,” Lily gasped, one hand reaching across the floor. “Please, let me hold him. Something is wrong.”
Serena Montigue looked down at her with an expression that did not belong on a human face.
It was not panic.
It was not guilt.
It was annoyance.
As though Lily had spilled wine on an expensive carpet instead of trying to save a baby.
“You are finished,” Serena whispered. “Do you understand me? You think Victor will choose you? A poor little nanny with bruised knees and cheap shoes?”
Lily did not answer.
Her eyes were on Ethan.
His tiny fingers curled weakly against the marble. His cheeks were wet. His arm rested wrong beside him, and every protective instinct inside Lily screamed so loudly she barely heard Serena anymore.
Then came the sound.
A door opening.
Not the front door.
The side entrance near the private garage.
A sound so soft most people would have missed it.
But Serena heard it.
Her face changed.
For the first time, fear crossed her perfect features.
Her heel lifted from Lily’s stomach.
In one smooth movement, Serena turned away from the injured nanny and reached for Ethan, suddenly forcing sweetness into her voice.
“Oh, my poor darling,” she said loudly. “What did she do to you?”
Lily froze.
No.
Serena bent toward the baby as if she had been comforting him all along.
“My God,” Serena cried, louder now. “Help! Someone help! The nanny hurt him!”
Lily’s blood turned cold.
Footsteps entered the foyer.
Slow.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Victor Blackwood stepped into view.
He was not supposed to be home.
Not for another four hours.
His black coat was still dusted with rain from the storm outside. Two security men stood behind him, both stopping the instant they saw the scene.
Victor’s eyes moved once across the foyer.
The baby on the marble.
Serena crouched beside him.
Lily collapsed several feet away, one arm wrapped around her stomach, hair fallen over her face.
A shattered vase near the staircase.
The silence that followed was worse than shouting.
Serena rushed to her feet.
“Victor!” she cried, running toward him. “Thank God you’re here. I came in and found her dragging Ethan. She lost control. I tried to stop her.”
Lily tried to speak, but pain stole the breath from her chest.
Victor did not look at Serena.
He looked at his son.
The feared Victor Blackwood, the man whose name could silence a room of criminals, walked past his fiancée as if she were smoke.
He knelt beside Ethan.
His entire face hardened.
Not with rage.
With terror.
“Call Dr. Hale,” he said quietly.
One security man moved instantly.
“Now,” Victor added.
The man began speaking rapidly into his phone.
Victor slipped off his coat and placed it gently beneath Ethan’s head without moving the child’s injured arm. His voice dropped into something Lily had never heard before.
Softness.
“Ethan,” he whispered. “Papa’s here.”
The baby made a broken little sound.
Victor’s jaw clenched.
Serena pressed a hand to her heart and began to cry beautifully.
“She attacked him,” she said. “Victor, I swear, I tried to protect him. Lily went crazy. She kept saying the baby loved her more than me. I always knew she was unstable.”
Lily forced herself onto one elbow.
“No,” she whispered.
Serena spun toward her.
“Shut up.”
The word came out too sharp.
Too real.
Victor heard it.
His head lifted slowly.
Serena caught herself, softening immediately.
“I mean… don’t strain yourself,” she corrected, voice trembling. “You’re obviously not well.”
Lily tasted blood where she had bitten her lip. Her vision blurred, but she forced herself to look at Victor.
“She dragged him,” Lily breathed. “By the arm. I tried to stop her.”
Serena let out a shocked laugh.
“Listen to her. She’s desperate.”
Victor did not respond.
His eyes moved from Lily’s scraped knees to the mark blooming across her abdomen where Serena’s heel had struck her. Then he looked at Serena’s shoes.
Cream-colored heels.
One heel was smeared with faint red from Lily’s scraped skin.
Serena followed his gaze and subtly shifted her foot behind the other.
Too late.
Victor saw.
The air in the foyer changed.
“Marco,” he said.
The second security man stepped forward.
“Yes, boss.”
“Lock the house.”
Serena’s crying stopped.
Victor’s voice remained calm.
“No one leaves. No one deletes footage. No one makes a phone call except the doctor and the police.”
Serena’s face drained.
“Police?” she whispered.
Victor finally looked at her.
And when he did, Lily understood why dangerous men feared him.
There was no yelling.
No theatrics.
Just a cold, absolute certainty.
“My son is injured,” Victor said. “My nanny is injured. And someone in this house is lying.”
Serena swallowed.
Outside, thunder rolled over Chicago.
Inside, the empire Victor Blackwood had built began to tremble around one tiny wounded child and one nanny brave enough to crawl through pain to reach him.
Then Ethan whimpered again.
Victor’s hand shook as he touched his son’s hair.
For one brief second, the mafia boss disappeared.
Only a father remained.
“Hold on, little man,” he whispered. “Hold on for me.”
Lily lowered her forehead to the marble, tears slipping from her eyes.
She had protected Ethan as long as she could.

Now the truth had entered the room.
And Serena Montigue had nowhere left to hide.
