Chapter 13 - Carlo’s Last GameCarlo’s applause echoed through the ballroom like a slow funeral bell.

One by one, people stopped shouting.
Even Luca turned toward him.
Carlo smiled from behind my mother’s wheelchair.
“Very clever,” he said. “Messy, but clever.”
Dominic took one step forward.
“Let her go.”
Carlo rested a hand on my mother’s shoulder.
I felt my father go still beside me.
“Always sentimental,” Carlo said. “That was your weakness, Nico. Your sister had it. Julian had it. Even Luca, in his way, has it.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
Carlo looked around the room. “Sentiment makes people predictable. Money makes them useful. Fear makes them honest.”
He nodded toward the balcony.
Armed men appeared above us.
Not Luca’s.
Carlo’s.
The old king had let everyone betray everyone else, then arrived with the only army still intact.
Dominic’s men reached for weapons.
Carlo sighed.
“Don’t embarrass yourselves. Every exit is covered.”
Sofia looked up at the balcony, then at my father.
Something passed between them.
A plan, maybe.
Or an apology.
Carlo’s eyes landed on me.
“Amelia Reed. You have your father’s eyes.”
I wanted to spit at him. Instead, I smiled.
“And you have every villain’s habit of talking too much.”
A few people gasped.
Dominic’s mouth moved like he was trying not to smile.
Carlo’s expression cooled.
“You think courage is volume.”
“No,” I said. “I think courage is doing something while you’re terrified.”
I looked at my mother.
Her fingers twitched against the blanket.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Morse.
My heart slammed.
She was signaling.
I forced myself not to react.
Three short. Three long. Three short.
SOS.
Then another pattern.
LEFT HAND.
I looked.
Her left hand was tucked beneath the blanket.
Carlo had missed it.
Of course he had.
Men like Carlo watched guns, doors, threats.
They did not watch sick women.
My mother’s left hand moved again.
COMPACT.
She knew.
She knew about the overlay. The mirror. The hidden key. She had never truly been gone.
Carlo addressed the room. “The Meridian file is no longer for sale. You will all transfer your final payments to the accounts provided. In exchange, you leave alive, and your secrets remain mine.”
Constantine laughed from near the bar.
“You expect us to trust you?”
Carlo smiled. “No. I expect you to fear me.”
Luca looked around and realized he had been beaten.
For the first time, he looked young.
Not innocent.
Just young enough to understand that the monster he had served had never planned to let him inherit anything.
“Carlo,” Luca said carefully. “We had an agreement.”
Carlo looked bored. “I had an agreement. You had ambitions.”
Luca’s hand twitched.
Carlo’s men aimed down from the balcony.
Dominic saw it.
Sofia saw Dominic see it.
My father moved first.
He knocked over a table, sending glasses and candles crashing across the stage. Sofia pulled a smoke device from beneath her red glove and threw it toward the balcony.
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
People screamed.
Dominic grabbed me.
I grabbed the journal.
Luca lunged for the overlay.
My mother’s wheelchair rolled backward as she pushed herself with surprising force, slamming Carlo’s knee.
He cursed.
For one glorious second, the old king stumbled.
My father reached my mother.
Dominic shielded me as Carlo’s men fired into the ceiling to regain control.
Sofia tackled Luca off the stage.
Constantine used the chaos to move toward the side exit.
And I saw the one thing no one else saw.
Carlo’s white dinner jacket had torn open.
Inside pocket.
A red leather folder.
Marked with my father’s sparrow.
The real Meridian file.
Not the journal.
Not the overlay.
The original.
Carlo caught me looking.
His eyes narrowed.
I ran toward him.
Dominic shouted my name.
Carlo reached inside his jacket.
I reached faster.
For once, the waitress got to the table before the powerful man.
I tore the folder free.
Carlo grabbed my wrist.
His fingers crushed bone.
“You stupid little girl,” he hissed.
I looked him in the eye.
Then I did what invisible women do when rich men grab them.
I drove my heel into his foot.
Carlo released me with a snarl.
Dominic reached us and hit his father hard enough to send him backward into the platform.
The ballroom froze for half a heartbeat.
Dominic stood over Carlo Russo.
The son.
The heir.
The man built by the monster.
And he did not finish him.
May you like
He turned away.
That was the moment Carlo truly lost.
