Chapter 10 - The Dance She ChoseTwo years later, Lily could tie both shoes without help.

She could also read the word Harborlight above the doors of the restored theater. Rosa held one hand as they climbed the steps; Nico held the other.
The theater had reopened as a community arts center. Money recovered from Sal’s scheme had gone back to the relief fund. Separate donations and a public campaign paid for the theater’s restoration and dance classes. Rosa had helped plan the programs, insisting that children be able to attend without owning special shoes.
Lily wore sneakers for her first performance there. They were pink, clean for the moment, and chosen entirely by her.
Nico had been home for three months. He lived in a small apartment nearby while he finished the conditions of his sentence and learned the ordinary shape of Lily’s days. He took her to the library, met Rosa at school events, and helped make dinner on Thursdays. Sometimes Lily wanted him beside her all afternoon. Sometimes she wanted Rosa and waved him home after an hour. He respected both.
Outside the theater, they paused beneath a photograph of Clara. It showed her in the blue coat she wore in Nico’s old picture, smiling into the wind. A small plaque named her as a dancer and as someone who had helped recover money stolen from her community.
Lily read the first line slowly.
“That’s a lot of words about her.”
“She earned them,” Rosa said.
“Was she funny?”
“Very,” Nico answered. “She once hid every black tie I owned because I said dancers didn’t need accountants.”
Rosa laughed. “She made you wear a blue one.”
“For a month.”
Lily looked at the photograph again. “I think she would like my shoes.”
“She would,” Rosa said.
Inside, the dressing room smelled of hairspray and fresh paint. Children ran between costume racks. Lily joined her group, then came back to ask Nico to hold a ribbon she had decided not to wear.
Vivienne’s ballroom contest was rarely mentioned now. Lily knew she had danced at a party when she was four and that a grown-up had been unkind. She also knew the promise of money had been kept. Rosa and Nico had made sure it remained available for Lily’s future, beyond the excitement of a single night.
The performance began with the younger children stepping out in uneven lines. One forgot where to stand. Another waved at his grandfather throughout the first song. The audience loved them.
Lily’s group danced last.
Rosa and Nico sat together in the third row. When the familiar slow melody began, Rosa reached for his hand. Onstage, Lily glanced toward them and smiled. She had chosen to include Clara’s turn in the dance.
She pressed one hand to her heart. She spun. For an instant she wobbled on her sneakers, just as she had on the marble floor two years earlier. Then she steadied herself, touched one palm to the stage, and rose with her other hand pointing left.
This time Nico followed her gesture with his eyes.
The left stage door stood open. Beyond it, he could see a bright corridor filled with children waiting for their turn to dance.
Lily finished beside her friends. Applause filled the theater. She bowed too early, saw the others bow, and did it again.
Afterward, she ran straight to Rosa and Nico.
“Did you see the part I made up?”
Nico crouched. “Which part?”
“I smiled before the turn. Miss Clara said I could.”
Rosa brushed a strand of hair from Lily’s face. “I saw.”
Lily took each of their hands. “Can we get dinner? Dancing makes me hungry.”
They walked out of the theater together. At the doors, Lily stopped to look once more at Clara’s photograph.
“I did the slow song,” she told it.
Then she pulled Rosa and Nico into the evening, eager to choose where they would eat.
