Chapter 15 - Two Queens in One TrapIsabella Cross laughed when she saw the wine cellar.

“You put the heir of the Falcone family underground,” she said. “How poetic.”
Marcus stood beside the old tasting table. Owen and two trusted guards flanked the door. Renato remained in the corner, silent. Marisol held Lucia near the bassinet where Matteo slept under Dana’s watchful eye.
Isabella’s gaze moved to the baby.
For the first time since Lucia carried him into the dining room, Isabella truly looked at him.
Not at the bracelet.
Not at the evidence.
At him.
Something passed across her face.
Not love.
Not regret.
Recognition, perhaps, that the thing she had called an obstacle had a mouth, a heartbeat, a fist curled around air.
Then it vanished.
Marcus placed a photo on the table.
Celeste Moretti at a charity gala, red gloves, gold snake bracelet.
“Where is she?”
Isabella smiled.
“If I knew, why would I tell you?”
“Because she is cleaning up loose ends. You are one.”
The smile faded slightly.
Good.
Marcus continued.
“Helena Park is missing. Amara almost disappeared. My son was placed where garbage would carry him away. Do you think Celeste leaves partners alive?”
Isabella’s eyes flickered.
“She needs me.”
“No. She needed you while you controlled access to my house. Now my house is sealed, my son is alive, and your documents are on my table.”
“She does not have Valentina’s evidence.”
“Do you?”
Isabella said nothing.
Marcus leaned forward.
“You wanted the estate. Celeste wanted the ledgers. Whitmore wanted money. Renato wanted silence. Everyone wanted something except the baby.”
Lucia whispered, “His mother wanted him.”
The room stopped.
Isabella’s head turned slowly toward the little girl.
For a moment, hatred showed naked on her face.
Marisol stepped in front of Lucia.
Marcus’s voice cut in.
“Look at her like that again and every person in this room will understand exactly what you are.”
Isabella looked back at him.
“She is a servant’s child.”
“She is the witness who ended you.”
Isabella’s nostrils flared.
“You think Americans love stories like this, Marcus? A powerful man humbled by a brave poor child? It sounds beautiful until reporters start asking why that child was barefoot in your mansion at night. Why her mother was working sixteen-hour shifts. Why your wife trusted the maid more than her husband.”
Marcus took the blow.
Because some blows were true.
Marisol looked down.
Marcus said quietly, “Then they should ask.”
Isabella blinked.
He continued.
“They should ask all of it.”
Renato stared at him.
Isabella’s expression changed into disbelief.
“You would let them tear open your life?”
“My life is already open.”
“You would destroy the Falcone name?”
Marcus looked at the baby.
“No. I would stop confusing the name with the child.”
Silence followed.
Something in Isabella shifted then. A calculation failed. Marcus saw it happen.
For years, everyone had predicted him by power. Protect the name. Protect the empire. Protect the old sins.
But grief had moved the center of him.
Valentina had known it could.
Isabella stepped closer to the table.
“Celeste has Helena,” she said.
Marisol gasped.
Marcus did not move.
“Alive?”
“For now.”
“Where?”
“A private clinic outside Newark. Moretti-owned. Helena had copies of Schedule B.”
“What is Schedule B?”
Isabella’s smile became bitter.
“The thing Valentina should have burned. A ledger tying your father, Moretti’s father, and half the city’s respectable men to shell charities, stolen properties, and judges who retired rich.”
Renato whispered, “God.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Don’t act holy now.”
Marcus studied her.
“Why tell me?”
“Because Celeste will trade Helena and the ledger for the child.”
Dana’s hand tightened on the bassinet.
Marcus’s face went colder than anyone had seen it.
“She will not get near my son.”
Isabella shrugged.
“Then Helena dies. The evidence disappears. Celeste blames me. You drag me through court and learn nothing except what it feels like to lose twice.”
Lucia suddenly spoke.
“She’s still lying.”
Isabella turned sharply.
Marcus looked at Lucia.
“How do you know?”
Lucia’s voice was soft.
“Because she smiled when she said the lady has Helena. But she didn’t smile when you said Celeste would kill her.”
Marcus looked back at Isabella.
The child was right.
Isabella feared Celeste.
But Helena was not Isabella’s bargaining chip.
Something else was.
Marcus stepped around the table.
“What do you still have?”
Isabella’s lips parted.
Then from upstairs came a crash.
A guard shouted.
Gunfire did not follow.
But glass shattered.
Owen’s radio screamed.
“Breach at the chapel corridor! Woman in red gloves!”
Isabella closed her eyes.
Marcus looked at her.
Celeste Moretti had entered the mansion.
May you like
And she had not come for the ledger first.
She had come for the baby.
