Chapter 3 - The Woman Serena BuriedNobody spoke.

Even Serena seemed to realize what she had just said.

Caleb lowered the papers.

“Yet?”

Serena blinked.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“It’s exactly what you meant.”

She stepped into the room.

“Caleb, please. Give me the folder.”

Marcus moved between them.

“Mrs. Sterling, stay where you are.”

Her eyes flashed.

“This is my home.”

Marcus didn’t move.

Caleb almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because for six years he had watched Serena command rooms simply by assuming everyone would obey.

And most people had.

Waiters.

Drivers.

Assistants.

Board members.

Even him.

Not anymore.

Caleb held up the psychiatric evaluation.

“Did Dr. Bell write this?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you forge my signature?”

“No.”

“Did you prepare the guardianship petition?”

“No.”

“Did you write this?”

He showed her the note.

Her face went blank.

“I’ve written thousands of things. Anyone could imitate my handwriting.”

June stared at her.

Serena noticed.

“You.”

June remained silent.

“This is because of you.”

“No,” Caleb said.

Serena ignored him.

“You’ve been filling his head with poison.”

June’s hands tightened at her sides.

“I have barely spoken to Mr. Sterling without you standing nearby for months.”

“Because you’re obsessed with my child.”

June flinched.

Caleb saw it.

Serena continued.

“You never had children, did you, June? Maybe that’s why you attached yourself to mine.”

“Stop.”

Caleb’s voice filled the room.

Serena turned.

He had never looked at her that way before.

“Do not use my son to humiliate her.”

“She is manipulating you.”

“Then prove it.”

“I don’t have to prove anything in my own marriage.”

“Today you do.”

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

Then looked at Caleb.

“We found Lena.”

Serena’s head snapped toward him.

Too quickly.

Caleb saw it.

“Where?”

Marcus kept his eyes on Serena.

“A motel outside Stamford.”

Serena immediately reached into her dress pocket.

Marcus said, “Don’t.”

She froze.

“What?”

“Don’t touch your phone.”

“This is insane.”

Caleb walked toward her.

“Why are you afraid of Lena?”

“I’m not.”

“Then you won’t mind if I speak to her.”

“She stole from us.”

“She stole jewelry?”

“Yes.”

“What jewelry?”

“My grandmother’s bracelet.”

“What did it look like?”

Serena hesitated.

“A gold bracelet.”

“With?”

“Diamonds.”

“How many?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because you told the insurance company it was a sapphire bracelet.”

Silence.

Caleb didn’t actually know what Serena had told the insurance company.

He had guessed.

Her pause gave him the answer he needed.

Serena realized it a second too late.

“You’re trying to trap me.”

“No,” Caleb said. “I’m starting to understand how often you trapped everyone else.”

He turned to Marcus.

“Bring Lena here.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t recommend that.”

“Why?”

“Because she says someone followed her twice this week.”

June went pale.

Serena gave a sharp laugh.

“You believe that?”

Marcus looked at her.

“I believe people who are scared enough to change motels every night.”

Caleb felt the room becoming colder.

“Where is she now?”

“Safe.”

“Take me to her.”

Serena stepped forward.

“Caleb, if you walk out that door—”

He stopped.

“If I walk out that door, what?”

Her confidence returned.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

“You think this is only about a recording?”

Caleb studied her.

Serena folded her arms.

“You have enemies.”

“Everyone with money has enemies.”

“You have people who would destroy your family to get to Sterling Global.”

“Then help me find them.”

“I am trying.”

“No. You’re trying to keep me away from Lena.”

Her lips tightened.

Caleb walked past her.

At the doorway, he stopped.

“Marcus, Serena stays here.”

She laughed.

“You can’t detain me.”

“I’m not detaining you.”

Caleb looked back.

“You can leave anytime you want.”

Hope appeared in her eyes.

Then Caleb finished.

“But Theo stays.”

The hope disappeared.

Serena whispered, “You would take my baby from me?”

“No.”

Caleb glanced at the forged guardianship papers.

“You tried to take him from me.”

Forty minutes later, Caleb sat in the rear of a black SUV.

June insisted on coming.

Caleb initially refused.

She looked him in the eye and said, “Lena called me the night she disappeared.”

That changed everything.

Marcus drove while Caleb turned toward June.

“What did she say?”

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t believe the nursery cameras.’”

“And you never told me?”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“The next morning.”

“What stopped you?”

“Mrs. Sterling.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“What did she do?”

“She told me Lena had been arrested.”

Caleb frowned.

“Arrested?”

“She said the police found stolen jewelry in Lena’s car.”

Marcus glanced into the mirror.

“There’s no arrest record.”

June nodded.

“I know that now.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

Serena had isolated every person who might compare notes.

June.

Lena.

Even Caleb.

By telling each of them a different story.

The motel sat behind a gas station near Interstate 95.

Marcus’s second security team occupied the two rooms beside Lena’s.

When Caleb entered Room 214, he barely recognized her.

Lena Price was thirty-four.

When she worked at Sterling House, she had been confident, funny, endlessly patient with Theo.

Now she looked exhausted.

She jumped when the door opened.

Then saw June.

Her face crumpled.

“Oh, thank God.”

June hugged her.

Caleb waited.

Lena’s eyes eventually found him.

Fear returned.

“Mr. Sterling.”

“Lena.”

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand. I didn’t take the bracelet. I didn’t take anything.”

“I believe you.”

She stared.

Then sank onto the bed.

For several seconds she covered her face.

Caleb sat in the chair opposite her.

“I found the recorder.”

Lena looked up sharply.

“In the stroller?”

“Yes.”

She exhaled.

“I thought it was gone.”

“You put it there?”

“Yes.”

“Three weeks ago?”

“No.”

“Then when?”

“Last night.”

June gasped.

Caleb leaned forward.

“You were inside my house?”

Lena nodded.

“How?”

“Your son’s service elevator still uses the old maintenance code.”

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“We changed that code eight months ago.”

Lena looked at him.

“Serena gave me the new one.”

Silence.

Caleb stared.

“Why would Serena give you access after firing you?”

“She didn’t.”

Lena swallowed.

“She gave it to me before she fired me. She wanted me coming and going without appearing on the main access log.”

Caleb felt sick.

“What did she ask you to do?”

Lena began crying.

“I swear I never hurt Theo.”

“I didn’t ask that.”

“She wanted me to document things.”

“What things?”

“Every time Theo cried. Every time you raised your voice. Every time you missed a feeding because of work. Every time June entered the nursery.”

“Why?”

“To build a pattern.”

Caleb understood.

The psychiatric evaluation.

Guardianship.

Negligence.

Lena continued.

“At first she said she was preparing for a custody fight because she thought you were going to divorce her.”

“I never threatened divorce.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you cooperate?”

“Because she paid me.”

Lena wiped her eyes.

“And because I was stupid.”

June sat beside her.

Lena continued.

“Then Theo started getting sick.”

Caleb’s entire body went rigid.

“The first time, I thought it was random. The second time…”

She looked at June.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“What did you see?”

“I saw Dr. Bell change the medical notes.”

Caleb’s voice dropped.

“How?”

“The symptoms in the official chart were not what I reported.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“And the recorder?”

“I put one in Serena’s dressing room after she fired me.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

Lena looked embarrassed.

“I needed proof.”

“You recorded Serena and Dr. Bell.”

“Yes.”

“The conversation about guardianship?”

“Yes.”

“Why hide the recorder in the stroller?”

“I needed someone safe to find it.”

Caleb almost asked why she hadn’t called him.

Then he understood.

She hadn’t known whether he was safe.

Whether he was part of it.

Whether Serena controlled him completely.

June asked, “Why last night?”

Lena’s face changed.

“Because Serena called me.”

Caleb leaned forward.

“She called you?”

“She said if I returned the recorder, she’d stop.”

“Stop what?”

Lena looked directly at him.

“Trying to make Theo sick.”

The room went silent.

Caleb couldn’t breathe.

Lena reached into her backpack.

“I recorded that call too.”

She placed a second device on the bed.

Caleb pressed play.

Serena’s voice filled the cheap motel room.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

Lena answered.

“I have proof.”

“You have stolen property.”

“I know what you and Bell are doing.”

A pause.

Then Serena laughed softly.

“You know nothing.”

“I know Theo was healthy before Bell started coming.”

Another pause.

Serena’s voice changed.

“You want money?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to leave that baby alone.”

Then Serena said something Caleb would remember for the rest of his life.

“You’re confusing love with leverage, Lena. Theo isn’t a baby to Caleb’s father’s trust. He’s a voting block.”

Caleb shut off the recorder.

His hands were shaking.

Marcus looked furious.

June was crying silently.

Lena whispered, “There’s more.”

Caleb stared at her.

“What?”

“Dr. Bell wasn’t the person who designed the plan.”

“Who did?”

Lena looked terrified.

May you like

Then she said:

“Someone inside Sterling Global.”
