Chapter 13 - The Mattress BurnsLauren had gone into labor while the gunfire continued.

Maya found her in the east corridor, one hand against the wall, the other gripping her stomach.

The pain had become unbearable.

By the time Tessa and Vincent reached the maternity wing, Lauren was on a hospital bed surrounded by old medical equipment.

Dr. Ward had arrived through the underground entrance and was preparing for an emergency delivery.

“The baby is coming,” she said.

Vincent looked at Lauren.

Her face was wet with sweat and tears.

“I didn’t want you to see me like this.”

“You’re giving birth during a hostage situation.”

“I have terrible timing.”

Vincent reached for her hand.

She grabbed it hard enough to hurt.

“Do not leave me.”

“I won’t.”

“You say that now.”

“I’m saying it forever.”

The statement surprised him.

Lauren stared at him.

Then another contraction began.

She cried out.

Outside the room, Marco and Evelyn exchanged fire with Rafael’s men.

Tessa stayed beside her mother, who sat in a wheelchair near the door.

Sarah Morgan watched Vincent and Lauren with exhausted eyes.

“The final page,” Vincent said.

Sarah shook her head.

“You need to save the child first.”

“You said the baby was already inside this building.”

“I meant Noah.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

“Your father hid Noah’s identity.”

“His identity is on a birth certificate.”

“A false one.”

Sarah’s voice weakened.

“Your father knew the Board would search for a Corvino heir. So he changed the boy’s records. Noah is not your biological son.”

Vincent stared at her.

“What?”

“Your father protected him because Noah’s mother was the true heir of the Morgan line.”

Tessa’s face went pale.

Sarah looked at her daughter.

“Noah is your brother.”

The room went silent.

Tessa shook her head.

“My brother died.”

“The boy you believed died was taken from the hospital. Your father arranged for him to be raised under another name.”

Tessa looked toward Noah.

The seven-year-old stood beside the door, terrified and confused.

Sarah reached for him.

“Noah, come here.”

The boy moved slowly toward her.

Sarah touched his face.

“You have your grandfather’s eyes.”

Tessa stared at him.

“His name is Noah Morgan?”

Sarah nodded.

“His father was one of the Corvino guards. He died trying to protect him. Your grandfather gave the boy to Vincent’s father.”

Tessa’s eyes filled.

“You let me believe my brother was dead.”

“I was imprisoned.”

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“No one listened.”

Vincent looked at Noah.

The child who had called him father was not his son.

He felt something inside him crack.

Noah looked up.

“Am I not your boy?”

Vincent’s chest tightened.

He rolled closer.

“You are my boy.”

“But she says I’m her brother.”

“You can be both.”

Noah looked at Tessa.

Tessa knelt in front of him.

Her face was trembling.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I was told you were dead.”

“Who?”

“Your grandfather.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to keep you hidden.”

Noah looked between them.

“Are you my sister?”

Tessa placed both hands on his shoulders.

“Yes.”

“Are you going to take me away from him?”

Tessa looked at Vincent.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“You can have both of us.”

Noah threw his arms around her.

Vincent looked toward Sarah.

“Who is the true heir?”

Sarah’s eyes moved toward Lauren.

“The baby.”

Lauren gasped.

“Why?”

“Because she carries the last direct Corvino blood and the Morgan blood through Noah’s legal guardianship. Your father created a dual trust. The baby inherits the empire, but Noah is named protector.”

Vincent understood the design.

The Board had spent decades fighting over ownership, but the trust had been built to unite the two families.

The unborn child and Noah were meant to stand together.

Rafael wanted the final page because it proved he had no legal claim.

A cry filled the room.

Lauren screamed.

Dr. Ward lifted the baby.

“A girl.”

Vincent stared at the tiny child.

She was red-faced, furious, and alive.

The room seemed to shrink around her.

Lauren reached for her.

Then she looked at Vincent.

“Come closer.”

Vincent rolled beside the bed.

Dr. Ward placed the baby in his arms.

He held her carefully.

His hands had carried guns, signed contracts, and dragged his body through tunnels.

Now they shook around the smallest person he had ever touched.

“She has your eyes,” Lauren whispered.

“She has your temper.”

The baby cried louder.

Lauren laughed weakly.

For the first time in months, it sounded like the old Lauren.

“What will you name her?” Dr. Ward asked.

Vincent looked at Lauren.

She looked at him.

“Elena,” they said together.

A sudden explosion rocked the maternity wing.

The lights went out.

The baby began screaming.

Vincent pulled her against his chest.

Tessa pushed Noah beneath the bed.

Marco shouted from the hallway.

“Rafael is inside!”

A bullet struck the door.

Sarah Morgan pointed toward the mattress in the corner.

“Under it.”

Vincent looked.

The hospital mattress.

A narrow seam had been cut into its underside.

The same design.

The same secret.

Tessa pulled the mattress from the bed.

A metal box had been hidden beneath it.

Vincent looked at the box.

“Where’s the key?”

Sarah pointed toward Tessa’s necklace.

Tessa reached beneath her shirt and pulled out a small silver pendant.

“My mother gave me this when I was six.”

“It opens the box,” Sarah said.

Tessa inserted the pendant into the lock.

The box opened.

Inside was a folded legal document sealed in wax.

The final page.

Vincent reached for it.

Before he could touch it, the maternity room door burst open.

Rafael stood in the doorway.

He held a gun in one hand.

Silas stood behind him.

Dominic stood behind Silas.

Three generations of betrayal had come together.

Rafael’s gaze fixed on the baby in Vincent’s arms.

“Give her to me.”

Vincent held Elena closer.

“No.”

Rafael pointed the weapon at Lauren.

“Then she dies.”

Tessa stepped between them.

Rafael’s eyes shifted.

“You are the key.”

“You’re afraid of a piece of paper.”

“I’m afraid of what it proves.”

Sarah spoke from the corner.

“It proves your father was never the owner.”

Rafael’s face twisted.

“My father built everything.”

“Your father stole everything.”

Silas looked at Rafael.

“She’s lying.”

Rafael turned toward him.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

Vincent noticed.

He reached for the legal document.

Tessa grabbed it first.

Rafael raised his gun.

“Open it.”

Tessa broke the seal.

The final page unfolded.

At the top was a name.

Not Vincent.

Not Noah.

Not Elena.

A different name.

Rafael stepped forward.

“What does it say?”

Tessa read the first sentence.

Then her expression changed.

She looked at Vincent.

“The original owner of the Harbor Compact…”

A gunshot exploded.

Tessa fell backward.

The document flew from her hands.

Vincent screamed her name.

Rafael looked down at his gun.

He had not fired.

May you like

Silas had.

And Dominic was already running.
