Chapter 12 - Senator PierceSenator Alden Pierce denied everything before anyone accused him.

That was how Nadia knew they were close.
His statement appeared on national news the morning after the break-in.
The senator has no knowledge of any alleged private family matter involving the Whitmore family and condemns attempts to exploit old photographs for political purposes.
Claire read it twice.
“He sounds guilty.”
Nadia smiled without humor.
“He sounds expensive.”
Daniel sat across the table in Nadia’s office, silent.
He had barely spoken since seeing the photograph.
Claire knew why.
The image didn’t just show Margaret stealing a baby.
It showed a man with power standing guard.
Daniel’s life had not been stolen in one impulsive act of grief.
It had been arranged.
Approved.
Protected.
Nadia tapped the table.
“We need to know why Pierce helped.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“Money.”
“Maybe.”
Claire looked at him.
“You think it’s something else.”
Daniel hesitated.
“My father donated to Pierce’s first campaign. But not enough to justify kidnapping.”
Nadia opened a file.
“Thirty-four years ago, Pierce was under investigation for misusing hospital development funds. The investigation disappeared after Richard Whitmore funded the maternity wing.”
Claire leaned forward.
“So Richard helped Pierce. Pierce helped Richard.”
“And Margaret got a baby,” Daniel said flatly.
Nadia nodded.
“A perfect triangle.”
The door opened.
Officer Reynolds entered with a woman Claire didn’t recognize.
“This is Mara Jenkins,” he said. “Former aide to Senator Pierce.”
Mara was in her sixties, elegant but nervous.
She looked at Daniel for a long moment.
“You look like her.”
“Eleanor?”
Mara nodded.
“I was twenty-six when it happened. I worked late at the campaign office. Senator Pierce came in drunk and said Richard Whitmore had made a problem disappear.”
“What problem?” Nadia asked.
Mara swallowed.
“A dead baby. A living baby. A mother with no protection.”
Claire felt the room tilt.
Mara placed a cassette tape on the table.
Nadia stared.
“What is that?”
“I recorded him years later. Insurance. He talked when he drank.”
Daniel looked at the tape like it might explode.
“What does he say?”
Mara’s voice shook.
“That Margaret demanded the switch. Richard paid. Caldwell signed. Pierce made sure no investigation survived.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Nadia took the cassette carefully.
“Why come forward now?”
Mara looked at Claire.
“I saw your little girl on the news.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
Mara continued.
“I stayed quiet when a mother lost her son. I won’t stay quiet while they destroy another child.”
That evening, the tape was digitized.
Pierce’s voice crackled through Nadia’s office speakers.
Old.
Drunk.
Unmistakable.
Margaret didn’t want a child. She wanted a crown. Richard needed an heir, Caldwell needed money, and I needed Whitmore quiet. Eleanor Hayes was simply unlucky.
Daniel stood and walked out.
Claire found him in the hallway, one hand braced against the wall.
For a moment, she saw the boy he must have been.
Raised by a thief.
Praised as an heir.
Punished for tenderness.
Loved by no one who had the right.
She approached slowly.
“Daniel.”
He wiped his face quickly.
“I don’t know who I am.”
Claire’s voice softened despite herself.
“You’re Lily’s father.”
He looked at her.
“That’s the only part I haven’t ruined?”
Claire didn’t answer quickly.
Then she said, “It’s the only part you still have a chance to earn.”
Daniel nodded as if she had handed him a sentence and a lifeline at the same time.
May you like
Inside the office, the tape kept playing.
Margaret’s empire was beginning to speak against her.
