Chapter 15 - Eleanor’s GardenDaniel brought Lily to meet Eleanor on a Sunday.

Claire almost said no.
Then Lily asked, “Is she Daddy’s real mommy?”
Claire sat beside her on the bed.
“Yes.”
“Grandma stole Daddy?”
Claire took a breath.
Children deserved truth measured carefully.
“Grandma did something very wrong when Daddy was a baby.”
Lily frowned.
“Like chain wrong?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Yes. Like chain wrong.”
Lily thought about that.
“Then Daddy was little too.”
Claire had no answer.
At Rosehaven, Eleanor waited in the garden wearing a blue sweater. Ruth Donnelly sat beside her. Daniel stood nearby, nervous in a way Claire had never seen before.
Lily held Claire’s hand.
When Eleanor saw the child, her whole face changed.
“Lily,” Daniel said gently, “this is Eleanor.”
Lily looked at the older woman.
“You lost Daddy?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled instantly.
Claire closed her eyes.
Only a child could walk directly to the wound.
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily stepped closer.
“Did you cry?”
Eleanor’s hand trembled.
“Every day.”
Lily looked back at Claire, then at Daniel.
Then she placed her stuffed unicorn on Eleanor’s lap.
“This helps.”
Eleanor covered the toy with both hands.
Daniel turned away.
Claire pretended not to see him cry.
They sat together in the garden for an hour.
Eleanor could not say much, but Lily didn’t mind. She filled the silence with stories about cereal, cupcakes, unicorn horns, and how hotel pillows were too tall.
Eleanor listened as if every word were a miracle.
At one point, she touched Daniel’s hand and then Claire’s.
Claire stiffened.
Eleanor noticed and slowly withdrew.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“She knows we’re not okay.”
Claire glanced at him.
“Good.”
He nodded.
“I told her.”
“You told her what?”
“That I hurt you. That I failed Lily. That being stolen doesn’t excuse becoming cruel.”
Claire studied him.
The old Daniel would have hidden shame.
This Daniel had brought it into the light and let it burn.
After the visit, Eleanor pressed something into Claire’s palm.
A small silver baby bracelet.
Engraved with one word.
Danny.
Claire looked at Daniel.
He stared at the bracelet like it had punched the air from his lungs.
Eleanor whispered, “For him.”
Claire gently placed it in Daniel’s hand.
His fingers closed around it.
For once, Claire did not pull away when he cried.
But she did not comfort him either.
Some grief had to be held by the person who owned it.
On the drive back, Lily fell asleep.
Daniel walked Claire to her car.
“Thank you,” he said.
“For what?”
“For letting me have today.”
Claire looked through the window at Lily’s sleeping face.
“I did it for her.”
“I know.”
“And for Eleanor.”
“I know.”
Claire opened the driver’s door.
Daniel’s voice stopped her.
“I signed the temporary custody agreement. Full decision-making to you. Supervised visits until you choose otherwise.”
Claire turned.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes,” he said. “I did.”
For the first time, Claire felt something other than anger when she looked at him.
Not forgiveness.
Not love.

But the faintest outline of respect.
And after what Margaret had destroyed, even that felt dangerous.
