Chapter 13 - The House Learns Her Name

Sofia returned to the mansion to applause.
Not loud at first.
Mrs. Bell began it in the foyer, wiping her hands on her apron with tears running down her cheeks. Rosa joined next. Calvin. Luis. The gardeners. The kitchen staff. The cleaners. One by one, the people who had moved silently through Dominic’s house filled the entrance hall and clapped for the woman who had walked into a trap and returned with the truth.
Sofia stopped on the threshold.
Mia broke through the crowd and ran to her.
“Mama!”
Sofia knelt despite Dr. Vale’s protest and pulled her daughter into her arms.
“I wasn’t scared,” she whispered.
Mia leaned back and examined her face.
“A little?”
Sofia smiled through tears.
“A little.”
Mia nodded. “That still counts.”
Dominic stood near the staircase, watching.
He had received applause many times in his life. At charity galas. Business summits. Political dinners. People clapped for money, influence, fear, favors.
This was different.
This applause had nothing to do with him.
For once, the house was not performing power.
It was recognizing courage.
Rebecca approached him. “Teresa’s confession is strong. With Gerald cooperating and the archive records, we have a real case.”
“And Vincent?”
Her expression cooled. “He’ll distance himself.”
“He planned it.”
“We need more than belief.”
Dominic looked toward Sofia.
“We’ll get more.”
That evening, Dominic called every employee into the ballroom.
Many had never been allowed inside except to clean after parties.
Now chairs were arranged for them. Food was served to them. Their families were invited from the cottages and outer units.
Mia sat in the front row wearing a clean yellow sweater Mrs. Bell had found in storage.
Dominic stood on the small stage beneath the chandelier.
He hated speeches.
This one hated him back.
“For years,” he began, “many of you were stolen from.”
The room went silent.
“Money was taken from your wages. Medical requests were denied. Housing fees were invented. My signature was forged. My name was used to threaten you.”
He paused.
“I did not know.”
A murmur moved through the room.
He raised one hand.
“But not knowing is not innocence when I built the distance that allowed it.”
Sofia looked down.
Mia looked confused but attentive.
Dominic continued.
“Restitution payments begin tonight. Full forensic review will continue until every dollar is accounted for. Anyone who was threatened, underpaid, overcharged, or denied support will be repaid with interest.”
Mrs. Bell covered her mouth.
Rosa began crying.
“Second,” Dominic said, “all staff housing is now free as part of employment. No child fee. No hidden fee. No deduction that is not reviewed by independent counsel.”
Mia whispered loudly, “No child fee!”
A few people laughed through tears.
“Third, an employee council will be formed. Elected by you. Not appointed by me.”
Lena smiled faintly from the side.
“Fourth, the west wing will be converted into a staff family center until proper childcare support is established. Children are not disorder in this house.”
Sofia’s eyes filled.
Dominic looked directly at Mia.
“They are the reason a house is alive.”
No one spoke.
Dominic swallowed.
“Finally, Sofia Reyes and Mia Reyes are under my personal protection. But so are all of you. Protection does not mean silence. Protection means you can speak and expect to be heard.”
He stepped back.
For a second, nothing happened.
Then Calvin stood.
Mrs. Bell stood.
Rosa stood.
Soon the whole ballroom was on its feet.
Dominic did not know what to do with that kind of gratitude.
Mia solved it by climbing onto the stage and holding up the stained shirt.
“This is the brave shirt,” she announced.
The room laughed.
Dominic looked at Sofia.
She was laughing too, weak but real.
For one dangerous moment, the house felt like it might become something else.
A home.
Then Marco entered from the side door, face grim.
He handed Dominic a phone.
A video was playing.
Vincent Moretti sat in a dark room, smiling into the camera.
“Beautiful speech, cousin,” Vincent said. “But you forgot one thing.”
The camera shifted.
A warehouse.
Men unloading boxes marked with Castellano Shipping labels.
Vincent’s voice continued.
“You don’t only have thieves in your house. You have them in your empire.”
Dominic’s blood went cold.

The video ended with one final line.
“Choose carefully what you save first.”
