Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Judas

Daniel Pierce arrived at Castellano Tower at 8:55 a.m. carrying a leather folder, a silver pen, and the calm expression of a man who believed everyone else was tired enough to miss the knife.

Dominic did not confront him in the lobby.

He let him ride the private elevator to the forty-sixth floor. Let him greet Rebecca. Let him ask after Sofia with perfectly measured concern. Let him sit at the long glass boardroom table beneath the skyline and open his folder as if the day belonged to him.

The board members appeared on screens and in person, faces tense after forty-eight hours of scandal.

Daniel spoke first.

“With respect to Dominic, the company requires immediate stabilizing leadership. Given the ongoing investigations, I recommend he step aside temporarily as executive chair.”

Silence.

Dominic sat at the head of the table.

He did not move.

Daniel continued, smoother now. “This protects the company, our employees, and Mr. Castellano himself.”

Rebecca watched him like a hawk.

Lena sat near the wall with a laptop.

Dominic finally spoke.

“Who would assume interim authority?”

Daniel lowered his eyes modestly.

“I’m prepared to serve if the board asks.”

Of course he was.

Dominic looked around the table.

Some board members avoided his gaze.

Fear again.

Always fear.

Daniel had counted on it.

Dominic folded his hands.

“Before we vote, Lena has a report.”

Daniel’s smile did not move, but his eyes sharpened.

Lena stood.

“Last night, estate renovation files were accessed using Mr. Pierce’s executive credentials. Those files correspond to the service passage used in an attempted breach involving a threatened child witness.”

Daniel scoffed. “My credentials were obviously compromised.”

Lena clicked.

A security image appeared on the screen.

Daniel at his office terminal.

Time-stamped.

The room went still.

Daniel’s face lost a fraction of color.

“That image is taken out of context.”

Dominic leaned back.

“Then give us context.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca. “This is reckless.”

“No,” she said. “Reckless was using a company system to assist witness intimidation.”

A board member whispered, “My God.”

Daniel’s composure cracked.

“You people have no idea what Vincent is capable of.”

Dominic’s voice was low. “There it is.”

Daniel stood abruptly. “I kept this company alive while you played haunted prince in that museum you call a home.”

Dominic’s eyes hardened.

“You gave Vincent access.”

“I contained him.”

“You fed him.”

Daniel pointed at him. “Because he was going to destroy you! He had regulators, journalists, old family enemies. I gave him controlled information to protect the business.”

“You gave him a child’s location.”

“I didn’t know he would use it that way.”

Sofia’s voice came from the doorway.

“But you knew he had it.”

Everyone turned.

She stood beside Mia, who held Mrs. Bell’s hand. Security had tried to keep them downstairs. Apparently Mia had strong opinions about elevators.

Dominic rose. “Sofia—”

She looked only at Daniel.

“You knew a man who threatened my daughter had maps to where she sleeps.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

No words came.

Mia stepped forward, paper crown gone, brave shirt clutched to her chest.

“You helped the monster find doors.”

Daniel looked as if the child had struck him.

Dominic walked to Sofia.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Probably not,” she said. “But neither should he.”

Rebecca recovered first. “Mr. Pierce, federal agents are waiting outside.”

Daniel turned toward the board screens, desperate now.

“You can’t let him do this. Dominic Castellano is a liability. His name is poison.”

Dominic looked at the board.

For years, he had ruled them by competence and inherited fear.

Today he tried something else.

“The company will cooperate fully with investigators. Daniel Pierce is terminated effective immediately. Any board member who objects may resign publicly and explain why.”

No one objected.

Daniel laughed bitterly as agents entered.

“You think this makes you clean?”

Dominic answered, “No. It makes me accountable.”

As they took Daniel away, Mia tugged Dominic’s sleeve.

“Are all the monsters gone?”

He looked toward the skyline.

Vincent was still out there.

“No.”

She sighed. “That’s a lot of monsters.”

“It is.”

“Good thing we have a lot of people now.”

Dominic looked back at the boardroom — at Lena, Rebecca, Sofia, Mia, Mrs. Bell, Marco, and even the shaken board members who had finally chosen daylight over convenience.

For the first time, he did not feel alone at the top.

May you like

He felt surrounded.

And maybe, he thought, that was what a fortress was supposed to be.
