Chapter 15 - Emma DisappearsThe next morning began too normally.

That was what Claire would remember later.

Emma complained about oatmeal. Mr. Buttons needed a napkin bib. Claire burned one slice of toast and scraped it over the sink while Emma sang a nonsense song about fish wearing shoes.

The world looked ordinary right up until it broke.

At 8:10, Claire dropped Emma at daycare.

At 8:42, she arrived at Maya Ellison’s office with Ben’s recording.

At 9:17, the forensic specialist began copying the file.

At 9:26, Claire’s phone rang.

Daycare.

She answered immediately.

“Ms. Dawson?” The director’s voice shook. “Emma’s grandmother picked her up.”

Claire frowned. “Emma does not have a grandmother authorized for pickup.”

There was a silence.

Then the director said, “She had identification. A note. She said you had a legal emergency.”

Claire stood so fast her chair fell backward.

“What woman?”

“Blonde. Well-dressed. She—she had the password.”

Claire’s breath stopped.

Only one unauthorized person could have obtained that password from the childcare paperwork leaked through Mercer House employment files.

Vanessa.

Maya was already moving.

“Call 911,” she ordered her assistant. “Now.”

Claire’s voice became animal.

“Where is my daughter?”

The next twenty minutes lived forever in fragments.

Maya on the phone with police.

Claire vomiting into a trash can.

Julian being called.

The daycare director crying.

Security footage showing Emma walking out holding a woman’s hand, confused but not fighting, because someone had told her Mommy said it was okay.

That detail destroyed Claire.

By 10:05, Julian Mercer arrived at Maya’s office.

He did not come alone.

Maya blocked him at the conference room door.

“No illegal action. No intimidation. No shadow war. We do this clean.”

Julian’s face was white with controlled fury.

“If they have the child—”

“Then we get her back in a way that keeps Claire from losing her forever.”

Claire looked up.

Her eyes were empty with terror.

“Find her.”

Julian bent slightly, meeting her gaze.

“I will.”

Maya snapped, “Legally.”

Julian did not look away from Claire.

“Alive first. Legally second.”

“No,” Claire said.

He froze.

She stood, shaking.

“You promised daylight.”

His jaw worked.

“Claire—”

“If you turn this into one of your wars, they will say Emma was never safe around me. They will say I chose criminals over police. They will take her. Do you understand?”

Julian stared at her.

Then he forced the monster back into its cage.

“Yes.”

Police traced the pickup car to a rental.

The rental was abandoned three miles away.

Then came the message.

A video sent to Claire’s phone.

Emma sat in a pretty bedroom with pink curtains, holding Mr. Buttons. She was crying but unharmed.

Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Say hi to Mommy.”

Emma sobbed. “Mommy, I want to go home.”

Claire made a sound no one in the room would ever forget.

The video cut to Vanessa’s face.

No makeup could hide the hatred.

“You wanted daylight, Claire? Here it is. Tell Julian to destroy every file involving my family, or I will explain to the world why your daughter was safer with me.”

Maya whispered, “That is kidnapping.”

Julian watched the video once.

Then again.

On the third time, he noticed the window behind Emma.

Pink curtains.

Snowy trees.

A bronze horse statue outside.

He turned to one of his men.

“Whitmore estate. Lake Forest guesthouse.”

Maya grabbed his arm.

“Police first.”

Julian looked at Claire.

Claire could barely stand.

“Police first,” she said.

The words cost her everything.

Julian nodded.

“Police first.”

May you like

But as squad cars moved toward Lake Forest, Richard Whitmore made one final mistake.

He tried to move Emma.
