Chapter 16 - The GuesthouseThe Whitmore guesthouse looked like something from a bridal magazine.

White siding. Black shutters. A curved gravel drive. Window boxes full of winter greenery.

To Claire, watching from inside an unmarked police vehicle behind the tree line, it looked like hell dressed for company.

Maya sat beside her.

“You should not be here.”

Claire’s hands were locked together so tightly her knuckles had gone pale.

“I’m not leaving.”

“Police may not let you near her immediately.”

“I said I’m not leaving.”

Maya did not argue again.

Julian stood outside with detectives, his face unreadable. He had kept his promise. No private army stormed the place. No backdoor violence. No shadows.

But every officer there knew the air around him was dangerous.

A detective named Harris approached Claire’s window.

“We have confirmation your daughter is inside. We are moving now.”

Claire’s entire body shook.

“Is she hurt?”

“We do not believe so.”

“Believe?”

Harris’s expression softened.

“We’re getting her.”

The operation lasted seven minutes.

To Claire, it lasted years.

Officers moved across the snowy lawn. A knock. A command. A crash from the side door. Shouting.

Then a woman screamed.

Vanessa.

Claire lunged for the door.

Maya held her back.

“Wait.”

“I hear her!”

“Wait!”

Then the front door opened.

An officer stepped out carrying Emma.

Red hat gone.

Face wet.

Mr. Buttons clutched in both arms.

Claire broke free.

“Emma!”

The officer lowered the child just in time for Emma to run into her mother’s arms.

Claire fell to her knees in the snow.

Emma wrapped herself around Claire’s neck and screamed like every fear finally found permission to leave her body.

“Mommy! Mommy! I didn’t want to go! She said you said! I didn’t want to!”

Claire held her so tightly she could not speak.

Julian stood several yards away, watching.

Something in him changed forever.

He had seen men die. Men beg. Men betray brothers for money. He had seen violence dressed as business and grief disguised as revenge.

But nothing had ever looked as powerful as Claire Dawson kneeling in snow, holding her child like the world could burn around them and still not matter.

Vanessa was brought out in handcuffs moments later.

Her hair was wild. Her perfect coat hung open.

“This is a misunderstanding!” she screamed. “I was protecting her!”

Claire lifted her head.

For one terrible second, everyone thought she might attack.

Instead, she stood with Emma in her arms and walked toward Vanessa.

The officers tensed.

Claire stopped three feet away.

“You will never speak my daughter’s name again.”

Vanessa spat, “You think this is over?”

Claire’s voice went quiet.

“No. I think you finally made it simple.”

Richard Whitmore arrived before they loaded Vanessa into the car.

He stepped from a black SUV with two attorneys and the expression of a man offended by consequences.

“Detective Harris,” he said smoothly. “There has been a terrible family misunderstanding.”

Julian walked toward him.

Harris raised a hand. “Mr. Mercer.”

Julian stopped.

Barely.

Richard smiled. “Julian. Control your stray before she embarrasses herself further.”

Claire felt Julian’s fury like heat.

But before he could answer, Emma lifted her tear-streaked face from Claire’s shoulder.

“You’re the bad grandpa.”

The entire lawn went silent.

Richard’s smile vanished.

Julian looked at the child.

May you like

Then at Richard.

And for the first time in his life, Richard Whitmore looked afraid of someone who was only three years old.
