Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Turns

The board call began with Jeffrey trying to sound wounded.

Madeline joined from a hospital conference room borrowed from a sympathetic administrator. She wore the same clothes she had flown home in. Her hair was tied back. Her face was pale. But her voice was steady when her video square appeared on the screen.

Nine directors joined from Atlanta, New York, London, and Zurich.

Jeffrey appeared in his home office at the mansion, framed by walnut shelves and awards he had not earned alone. Noelle sat just behind him, out of focus but unmistakable. Cynthia was absent, though Madeline suspected she was nearby.

“Thank you all for joining on short notice,” Jeffrey said smoothly. “Unfortunately, Madeline is dealing with a personal family matter and may not be in the best emotional position to—”

“Stop.”

One word.

Madeline’s voice cut through every screen.

The board fell silent.

Jeffrey blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You will not use my son as a shield and my emotions as a weapon. Not today.”

The oldest director, Warren Pike, leaned toward his camera. “Madeline, what is going on?”

Madeline opened the folder Rebecca had prepared and shared her screen.

First slide: Medical summary.

Second slide: Emergency custody order.

Third slide: Timeline of her London assignment.

Fourth slide: Emails Jeffrey’s office had intercepted.

She did not play the worst videos. Not yet. She had enough mercy left to avoid turning Liam’s pain into spectacle.

But she played the recording from the living room.

Noelle’s voice filled the board call.

No dinner table until he behaved.

Cynthia’s voice followed.

He sleeps in the laundry room sometimes. Big deal.

Then Jeffrey.

Keep him away from Austin.

By the time the recording ended, no one spoke.

Jeffrey’s face had turned gray.

“This was taken out of context,” he said.

Madeline almost admired the instinct. Men like Jeffrey treated context like expensive furniture. They moved it wherever it looked best.

Warren Pike spoke first.

“What context makes that acceptable?”

Jeffrey opened his mouth.

No sound came out.

Another director, Amara Singh from London, said, “Madeline, are you safe?”

The question nearly broke her.

“Yes,” she said. “Liam is safe too.”

Amara’s face hardened. “Then my next question is corporate.”

Jeffrey stiffened.

Amara continued, “Were company resources used to conceal reports regarding this child?”

Rebecca slid Madeline a note.

Madeline read it once, then answered.

“We have evidence that emails sent to my corporate address were intercepted by Jeffrey’s executive office. We also have reason to believe outside counsel paid by Hale International threatened a former nanny after she attempted to report neglect.”

The board erupted.

Jeffrey slammed his palm on his desk.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

Madeline looked directly at him through the screen.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

Warren Pike turned grim. “Jeffrey, did company counsel send a cease-and-desist to a household employee regarding allegations of child neglect?”

Jeffrey’s silence answered before his mouth did.

Noelle leaned forward suddenly. “This is a family matter.”

Amara’s eyes flashed. “Not if corporate resources were used.”

Madeline let that sentence hang.

Then she delivered the blow Jeffrey never saw coming.

“As of this morning, I am requesting a special independent audit of all executive discretionary accounts, legal expenditures, domestic staffing payments, and communications routed through the CEO’s office during my London assignment.”

Jeffrey laughed once. “You don’t have authority to request that.”

Madeline shared the next slide.

Her contract.

Clause 14C.

Emergency Governance Review.

Rebecca had highlighted the relevant sentence.

In any matter where executive misconduct may materially affect international operations, the Executive Director of Global Expansion may request immediate independent review.

Amara read it and smiled.

“I second the request.”

Warren Pike nodded. “Approved.”

Jeffrey stood so abruptly his chair hit the shelf behind him.

“You cannot do this.”

Madeline closed the file.

“I already did.”

At that moment, an email notification appeared on every director’s screen.

Subject: Temporary Restriction of CEO Authority Pending Independent Review.

Jeffrey stared at it.

His empire had not collapsed yet.

May you like

But for the first time in his life, the floor beneath him moved.

And Madeline watched without blinking.
