Chapter 8 - Noelle’s Favorite Grandchild

The judge granted Madeline temporary sole custody of Liam before noon.

Jeffrey was allowed no unsupervised contact.

Noelle was allowed none at all.

The order landed like a thunderclap in the Hale family’s polished world. Outside the courtroom, reporters had already begun gathering. Someone had leaked the emergency hearing. Or perhaps too many people had seen Jeffrey Hale enter family court with his wife, mistress, mother, and two children at the center of a scandal no publicist could soften.

Madeline kept Liam away from the cameras.

Rebecca led them through a side exit while Marisol followed, head down. In the car, Liam curled under a blanket and fell asleep against Madeline’s side.

Only then did Madeline allow herself to ask the question.

“Why would Cynthia lie about Austin’s father?”

Rebecca looked up from her tablet.

“Money. Position. Protection. Maybe all three.”

“But Jeffrey believed her.”

“Men like Jeffrey often believe what flatters them.”

Madeline looked out the window.

Atlanta rolled past in sharp sunlight. Restaurants. Oaks. Glass office buildings. Streets full of ordinary people living ordinary lives while her family’s private nightmare began bleeding into public view.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

You don’t know the whole story. Noelle chose Austin before he was born.

Attached was a photo.

Madeline opened it.

Noelle sat in the mansion nursery, holding a newborn Austin. She was smiling with a tenderness Madeline had not seen from her in years. Behind her stood Cynthia, tired but triumphant.

On the wall above the crib hung silver letters.

AUSTIN HALE.

But if Jeffrey was not listed as the father, why had Noelle accepted him so completely?

Madeline forwarded the image to Rebecca.

“Trace the number.”

Rebecca studied the photo. “This room was Liam’s nursery?”

Madeline nodded.

Noelle had redecorated it while Madeline was overseas. Jeffrey had claimed Liam wanted a “big boy room.”

Madeline now understood.

Liam had not been moved.

He had been replaced.

That evening, after checking into a secure hotel suite recommended by Rebecca, Madeline sat beside Liam as a child psychologist gently assessed him. He knew some letters. He remembered songs. He understood far more than his broken speech suggested.

But certain words made him shut down.

Grandma.

Table.

Laundry.

Austin.

Bad boy.

When the psychologist left, she pulled Madeline aside.

“Recovery is possible,” she said gently. “But he needs safety, routine, and trauma-informed care. No sudden confrontations. No forced affection. Let him regain control little by little.”

Madeline nodded, though each word felt like a sentence for her own failure.

After midnight, when Liam finally slept, Rebecca returned with news.

“The unknown number belongs to Dana Phelps.”

“The nanny?”

“Yes. She wants to meet.”

Madeline stood immediately.

“She’s here?”

“In the lobby.”

Dana Phelps was younger than Madeline expected. Early thirties, tired eyes, hands that twisted constantly in her lap. The moment she saw Madeline, she began crying.

“I’m sorry,” Dana said. “I should have gone louder. I should have called police.”

“You tried,” Madeline said.

“Not enough.”

Madeline sat across from her.

Dana pulled a flash drive from her coat pocket.

“This is everything. Videos. Dates. Audio. The letter from Jeffrey’s lawyer. And one more thing.”

She looked toward the hallway, making sure no one else could hear.

“Noelle knew Austin wasn’t Jeffrey’s.”

Madeline went still.

Dana continued, voice trembling.

“She said blood didn’t matter if the child could be molded. She said Liam was weak like you and Austin had the right temperament for the Hale name.”

Madeline’s pulse slowed.

“Noelle said that?”

Dana nodded.

“And Jeffrey?”

“He didn’t know at first. Cynthia convinced him. Noelle backed her. By the time he found out there might be doubt, he was already attached to the lie. He chose the story over the truth.”

Madeline looked at the flash drive in Dana’s palm.

There were betrayals that happened in a moment.

And then there were betrayals carefully decorated over two years.

Madeline took the drive.

“Thank you.”

Dana wiped her face.

“There’s something else. Noelle wasn’t just cruel to Liam because of Austin.”

Madeline waited.

Dana’s voice dropped.

“She wanted Liam declared psychologically unfit before your return.”

Madeline’s blood turned to ice.

“Why?”

May you like

Dana swallowed.

“Because of the trust.”
