Chapter 12 - The Hospital Vanished

By the time Cameron reached Mercy General, federal agents had surrounded the hospital's east entrance. Ambulances blocked the street. Reporters gathered behind barriers, already broadcasting rumors about the billionaire, the shooting, and the alleged corruption investigation.

None of it mattered.

Elena's room was empty.

The monitors had been disconnected. A blanket lay on the floor. The window was open despite the rain.

Evelyn sat in a chair, shaking.

"They took her through the service corridor," she said. "A doctor came in and said she needed another scan. The nurse checked his badge, but he had a real name."

"Where was Hope?"

"With me. I saw the man carry Elena past the door. I chased them, but someone locked the stairwell."

Hope stood beside Agent Monroe, pale and silent.

"Did you see the man?" Cameron asked.

She nodded.

"Victor."

Cameron's hands curled into fists.

Ortiz reviewed the security footage. Victor had entered wearing a physician's coat and left pushing Elena in a wheelchair. He had disabled three cameras, but one had remained active.

The final image showed Victor placing Elena inside a white hospital transport van.

"The van was stolen," Ortiz said. "It left through the underground garage."

Agent Monroe turned to Cameron. "We need you to stay here."

"No."

"You are a target."

"So is she."

"We have teams searching every road."

"And Victor knows the hospital, the police response, and the Circle's escape routes. I know Elena. She would leave a sign."

Hope tugged on Cameron's sleeve.

"Mom can hear the ocean when she is scared."

Everyone looked at her.

"What does that mean?" Monroe asked.

"She says the ocean sounds like paper when it is far away. She told me about a place where she could hear it through the walls."

Cameron remembered Kite House.

"Victor took her there."

"We searched the estate," Ortiz said. "It was empty."

"There is an old coast road beneath the cliffs. My grandfather used to keep a boathouse there."

They raced toward the shoreline in three vehicles. Anna came with them. She had refused to remain at the hospital after learning Elena was missing.

"I know the tunnels," she said. "There is a second entrance below the chapel."

The boathouse was hidden between rocks and sea grass. Its door was chained, but fresh tire tracks crossed the wet sand.

Cameron entered first.

The building contained an overturned boat, fuel cans, and a narrow staircase leading downward. At the bottom, they found a tunnel lit by emergency lamps.

Elena's yellow scarf lay on the floor.

Hope picked it up. "Mom left this for us."

The tunnel ended at a concrete room beneath the cliff. Elena sat tied to a chair, bruised but conscious. Victor stood behind her with a gun.

"You came alone," he said.

"I came with the people who are going to arrest you."

"They will not reach me before I press this."

Victor held a remote detonator.

Explosives were strapped along the far wall.

Agent Monroe raised her weapon. "Drop it."

Victor pressed the button halfway. A red light began blinking.

"The tunnel collapses in thirty seconds."

Elena shook her head. "Do not come closer."

Cameron moved anyway.

"You want the ledger. It is in my car."

"The ledger is already with the government."

"Then you want revenge."

Victor laughed. "You think this is about revenge? Marianne will spend a decade in prison, your company will collapse, and every person connected to the Circle will turn on one another. But Adrian Vale left something for you."

"Adrian is dead."

"His son is not."

Victor gestured toward Elena.

"She remembers where the last children were taken. I need her alive long enough to tell me."

Elena's eyes met Cameron's.

He saw the message there. Not fear. A plan.

She moved her right hand slightly against the ropes.

Three taps.

The old signal they had used during board meetings when they needed to speak privately.

Three taps meant: Look at the ceiling.

Cameron glanced upward. A rusted sprinkler pipe crossed the room. A loose valve hung directly above Victor.

He understood.

"You are right," Cameron said. "Elena knows where the children are. She also knows where the last piece of the ledger is."

Victor's attention sharpened.

"Where?"

"Inside Hope's memory."

Victor looked toward the entrance.

Hope stood beside Agent Monroe, holding the red ribbon Cameron had worn.

"The child has the key," Victor said.

"Then you need me alive," Elena replied.

She pulled hard against the rope. The chair tipped sideways.

Cameron grabbed the sprinkler valve and twisted.

A torrent of water exploded from the pipe. Victor stumbled backward. Ortiz fired at the detonator, knocking it from his hand. Monroe rushed Elena while Cameron tackled Victor.

The tunnel shook.

"Everyone out!" Monroe shouted.

Cameron freed Elena's wrists and lifted her. She tried to walk but collapsed against him.

Victor crawled toward the detonator.

Anna kicked it into the flooded corner.

"You do not get to decide who disappears anymore," she said.

They reached the tunnel entrance as the ceiling began to crumble. Cameron carried Elena through the boathouse, rain striking both their faces.

Behind them, the tunnel collapsed with a roar.

Victor vanished beneath the stone.

For several seconds, only the ocean answered.

Then Elena coughed.

Cameron lowered her onto the sand.

"Are you hurt?"

"I am alive."

"That was not my question."

She looked at him, exhausted.

"You still ask terrible questions."

He laughed, then pulled her against him.

She rested her forehead against his shoulder.

"You came back," she whispered.

"I promised."

Hope ran through the rain and wrapped her arms around both of them.

For one brief moment, the three of them stood together beneath the storm.

Then Anna called from the boathouse.

"The tunnel is not empty."

She held up a small black case recovered from beneath the rubble.

Inside was a second phone.

It contained a single video from Adrian Vale.

The old man's face appeared on the screen.

"If you are watching this, Cameron, then my son has failed. But the Circle does not end with Victor. The final account holder is someone you see every day."

Adrian leaned closer to the camera.

"Look at the person who knows exactly when you are not looking."

The video ended.

At that moment, Cameron's phone received an alert from the hospital security system.
