Chapter 14 - The Last Account

The closed hospital sat at the edge of a frozen lake in northern Maine. Snow covered the road, and the building's windows reflected the gray morning like blind eyes.

Rebecca led the way through a service entrance. She carried no weapon. Cameron carried the red ribbon Hope had tied around his wrist.

The building had been abandoned for years, but generators hummed beneath the floor. Someone had restored part of it for private use.

They found Rebecca's brother in a room that had once been a pediatric ward. He was alive, weak, and connected to an IV. A nurse sat beside him, terrified.

"Where is Victor?" Rebecca asked.

The nurse pointed toward the surgical wing.

Gunfire erupted.

Federal agents moved forward as Cameron pulled Rebecca and her brother behind a concrete wall. The sound of footsteps rushed through the corridor.

Victor's voice echoed from the loudspeaker.

"Cameron, you have made a habit of arriving just before the ending."

"Let the hostages go."

"You still think this is about them. It is about the account."

On a monitor at the end of the hallway, Victor displayed a file labeled WEST FAMILY RESERVE.

"Your father created an account that cannot be touched by courts, tax agencies, or governments. It funds the Circle. It is worth four hundred million dollars. The account can be transferred only by a direct descendant who speaks the original authorization phrase."

Cameron understood.

Hope was the key because the account had been designed to pass through blood.

"You want Hope to authorize it."

"I want her to say a sentence she heard from her mother. The biometric system will recognize her voice."

"And then you will kill her."

"Only if you force me."

Elena's voice came through another speaker. Victor had captured her again while the team had been distracted by Rebecca's brother.

"Cameron, do not let him use Hope."

"Where are you?"

"The old operating room."

Victor laughed. "She is very brave when she believes you can hear her."

Cameron turned to Agent Monroe.

"We need to split the team. One group evacuates the patients. The other comes with me."

"You are not entering alone."

"I am the only person Victor wants."

"That is exactly why you are not entering alone."

They moved through the hospital using a maintenance corridor. Rebecca guided them around security cameras. At the operating wing, they found a door sealed with a keypad.

The monitor above the keypad displayed a sentence.

Only the West bloodline may enter.

Cameron placed his hand on the scanner. The door opened.

Victor stood inside the operating room with Elena tied to a table. A computer screen showed the West Family Reserve authorization page.

Hope was not there.

"Where is she?" Cameron demanded.

"Safe. For now."

The door behind Cameron locked.

Victor pointed the gun toward Elena.

"Say the phrase."

"I do not know it."

"Your daughter does."

"You are using my voice to activate the system."

"Your voice opens the first gate. Hope's voice opens the second."

Victor pressed a button. A live video appeared.

Hope sat in a small room with a nurse. She looked frightened but unhurt.

"Hope," Cameron said, forcing his voice to remain calm. "I need you to listen carefully. Do not say anything the man asks you to say."

Victor struck Elena.

Hope screamed.

"The phrase," Victor said.

Cameron's eyes moved around the operating room. The surgical lights hung from a track. An oxygen line ran along the wall. Agent Monroe's team would be trying to breach the door, but the electronic lock had been reinforced.

He needed time.

"The phrase is summer rain," he said.

Victor entered it.

The first gate opened.

"Now Hope."

"Bring her here."

"You know I cannot."

"Then Elena dies."

Cameron looked at the screen.

"Hope, your mother needs you to remember the story about the red kite. What did the bird do when the storm came?"

Hope's eyes narrowed. She understood this was a question hidden inside another question.

"It flew higher," she answered.

"And where did it go?"

"Home."

Victor moved toward the camera.

"Say the authorization phrase."

Hope looked directly at the screen.

"I only talk to my father."

Victor turned toward Cameron.

In that instant, Cameron lunged. He struck Victor's arm, sending the gun across the room. Elena twisted free enough to kick the operating table into Victor's knees.

Agents breached the door.

Victor ran toward the computer. Cameron tackled him before he reached it. They crashed into the monitor stand.

Victor fought like a man who had nothing left to lose. Cameron fought like a man who had finally found something worth losing everything for.

He pinned Victor's wrist to the floor.

"Where are the children?" Cameron demanded.

Victor laughed. "The account is not the only thing that survives."

Ortiz handcuffed him.

Agent Monroe shut down the computer.

Elena sat up, breathing hard.

"Is Hope safe?" she asked.

"Yes."

Rebecca rushed in with her brother behind her. The nurse had led them through the corridor.

The evidence recovered from the computer identified every active Circle account and every known facility. It also revealed that the children's records had been transferred to a private foundation in Vermont.

The final account holder was not Hope.

It was Cameron's father.

Thomas West had died years earlier, but the account remained active through a trust controlled by Cameron.

The money, the company, and the family name were all connected.

For the first time, Cameron understood what Elena had feared.

If he exposed the Circle, he would also expose himself as the legal beneficiary of its stolen wealth.

Agent Monroe gave him the choice.

"We can freeze the account and build the case. Or you can hide behind legal separation and preserve your company."

Cameron looked at Elena.

She said nothing.

He looked at the red ribbon around his wrist.

"Freeze it," he said. "Seize everything connected to my father."

Rebecca stared at him. "That will destroy West International."

"Then I will rebuild something honest."

Elena reached for his hand.

"Cameron, you do not have to give away everything to prove you are not him."

"I am not giving it away. I am returning what was stolen."

Outside, snow began to fall.

Victor was taken away in handcuffs. Marianne faced multiple charges. The network would take years to dismantle, but the center had finally been exposed.

As Cameron and Elena left the hospital, Hope ran toward them.

She hugged Elena first, then Cameron.

"Did you come back?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Did you miss another flight?"

Cameron glanced at the private plane waiting on the runway.

"I canceled it."

May you like

Hope smiled.

"Good."
