Chapter 2 - THE KEY UNDER THE CHAPEL

The old chapel room sat behind the west wing, sealed behind double oak doors no guest had touched since Elise Vale’s funeral.
When Dominic pushed the doors open, dust moved through the moonlight like disturbed ghosts.
The room still smelled faintly of cedar, stone, and dead flowers. White sheets covered the pews. A cracked stained-glass window threw broken color across the floor. At the far end stood the small altar Elise had once dreamed of restoring for charity weddings, christenings, and family ceremonies.
Dominic had not entered the room in eleven years.
He had told himself it was grief.
Now, with Mia’s brass key burning in his palm, he wondered how much of his grief had been carefully managed by the man waiting under guard in his office.
Daniel and Marcus followed him inside.
Harper had fallen asleep in a chair beside Mia’s bed, still clutching her mother’s hand. Mia had begged Dominic not to leave Harper alone with anyone. Not staff. Not Claire. Not Nathan’s men. No one.
Dominic had placed two guards at the medical suite door and one inside the room.
Then he came here.
The old chapel was cold.
Daniel scanned the walls. “Mrs. Carter said there was a drawer under the chapel room.”
“She said under the altar.”
Marcus knelt near the platform. “Sir.”
Dominic crossed the room.
Marcus had found a narrow seam in the wood beneath the altar steps. It was almost invisible, cut into the grain with obsessive care. Dominic crouched and inserted the brass key into a tiny lock hidden behind a carved rose.
The panel clicked.
The sound was soft.
But to Dominic, it felt like the house had just confessed.
Inside was a shallow metal drawer.
Daniel pulled it open.
There were four items inside.
A sealed envelope with Dominic’s name written in Elise’s handwriting.
A stack of property deeds.
A small black flash drive.
And a photograph.
Dominic picked up the photograph first.
His chest tightened.
Elise stood beside the wine cellar door, one hand resting on the new stonework that had been installed days before her death. She was smiling, but her eyes were tense. Behind her, barely visible in the edge of the frame, Nathan Cross stood watching her.
Dominic turned the photo over.
On the back, Elise had written one sentence.
If anything happens to me, start beneath the house.
Dominic’s fist closed around the photograph.
Daniel looked away.
Marcus muttered a curse.
Dominic opened the envelope next.
The paper inside was brittle at the folds. Elise’s handwriting moved across the page in elegant, hurried lines.
Dominic,
If you are reading this, it means I was right not to trust Nathan.
I know what you will want to do. Don’t do it first. Read everything. Make sure Harper Carter is protected if Mia has been brave enough to help you find this. Mia’s mother worked here before her. She knows stories the staff were told to forget.
Nathan has been moving money through the old estate accounts. He is not alone. I believe he has been selling access to our routes and properties to the Albin family. I confronted him. He smiled at me and called me sentimental.
There is a second room behind the wine cellar. Not on any blueprint. It was built during your grandfather’s time and sealed after the federal raids. Nathan found it. I think he is using it.
I was going to tell you after the Atlantic City meeting.
I am afraid I may not get the chance.
I love you. I am sorry I kept this from you, but you loved him like a brother, and I needed proof before I broke your heart.
Elise.
Dominic read the letter once.
Then again.
The room around him disappeared.
Eleven years of grief shifted under his feet.
Nathan had been there the night Elise died. He had crawled from the passenger side of the burning car with blood on his face and Dominic’s wife’s ring in his pocket, swearing he had tried to save her.
Dominic had believed him.
He had held Nathan in a hospital room and thanked him for surviving.
Thanked him.
Dominic folded the letter slowly and placed it inside his coat.
Daniel’s voice was careful. “Sir.”
Dominic took the flash drive. “Get Leo from tech. Air-gapped machine only. No network.”
“Yes, sir.”
Marcus lifted the property deeds. “These aren’t all yours.”
Dominic glanced down.
His name was on some.
Nathan’s shell companies were on others.
Claire Bennett’s signature appeared on the newest transfers.
Dominic’s blood went colder.
Claire had not simply been hiding Mia.
She had been marrying him while helping Nathan carve his house apart from beneath him.
Footsteps sounded outside the chapel.
All three men turned.
A guard appeared at the doorway, pale. “Sir.”
“What?”
“Mr. Cross wants to talk.”
Dominic’s mouth tightened. “I’m sure he does.”
“He said you should ask Mrs. Carter what she heard through the wall last night.”
Dominic became still.
The guard hesitated. “He said if she tells you the wrong version, people will die.”
Marcus moved instantly toward the door. Dominic raised one hand.
Everyone stopped.
Nathan was not begging.
Nathan was bargaining.
That meant something was still hidden.
Dominic looked back at the altar. At Elise’s letter. At the drawer under the chapel floor. At the photograph of his dead wife standing beside the same cellar where Mia had been left to disappear.
Then he understood.
This was not about one kidnapping.
This was not even about Claire’s betrayal.
The house had been holding secrets for more than a decade, and Nathan Cross knew exactly where the deepest ones were buried.
Dominic walked from the chapel without speaking.
In the corridor, Claire’s voice echoed from upstairs.
“You cannot lock me in a room like some criminal!”
Dominic looked up toward the second floor.
Claire stood at the railing in her robe, two guards behind her. Her face was flushed now, the innocent softness gone.
When she saw the envelope in Dominic’s hand, the color drained from her cheeks.
“You found it,” she whispered.
Dominic climbed the stairs slowly.
Claire backed away.
“What did Nathan promise you?” Dominic asked.
Her lips trembled. “I loved you.”
“No,” Dominic said. “You loved the name.”
Claire’s eyes hardened. “You think Mia is innocent? That poor little saint downstairs? Ask her why Elise trusted her family. Ask her what her mother took from this house.”
Dominic stopped one step below her.
Claire leaned forward, desperate now. “You don’t even know who you’ve been protecting.”
Dominic stared at her.
For a moment, the entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.
Then a scream came from the medical wing.
A child’s scream.
May you like
Harper.
Dominic ran.
