Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE CHOOSES A SIDE

The carriage house had not held carriages in fifty years.

Now it held old equipment, covered vehicles, broken furniture, and the kind of family history rich men hid when they wanted visitors to see only marble and chandeliers.

Rain began before Dominic reached the north path.

Not a hard storm.

A cold, thin rain that silvered the grass and turned the estate lights into blurred halos.

Daniel and Marcus moved behind him with six loyal guards. Loyal. That word felt different now. Dominic no longer trusted it simply because he had paid for it.

He trusted what people did when no one powerful was watching.

Rosa had swung a candlestick.

Harper had carried a tray like a shield.

Mia had hidden proof inside a child’s toy.

Loyalty had not come from men with guns.

It had come from women everyone underestimated.

Dominic stopped twenty yards from the carriage house.

Nathan stood under the stone arch, perfectly dry beneath the overhang. Even cornered, he looked composed. A dark coat. Clean shoes. Silver watch. The same watch Mia had remembered seeing in the cellar.

“Dom,” Nathan called. “Let’s talk before this becomes embarrassing.”

Dominic raised his gun.

Nathan sighed. “Still dramatic.”

“You sent men to Mia’s room.”

“I sent Vincent to retrieve stolen property.”

“A woman?”

“A liability.”

“A child?”

Nathan’s expression barely shifted. “Insurance.”

Dominic took one step forward.

Daniel quietly lifted his weapon toward Nathan’s men.

Nathan smiled. “Careful. There are still things you don’t know.”

Dominic said, “Then talk.”

Nathan glanced at the guards. “Privately.”

“No.”

Nathan’s smile sharpened. “You used to understand hierarchy.”

“I used to think you were my brother.”

For the first time, pain moved across Nathan’s face.

Not guilt.

Insult.

“I was your brother,” Nathan said. “I built everything you were too grief-soaked to see. When Elise died, you were a corpse in a suit. Who kept the families from tearing into your territory? Who sat across from federal agents and smiled while you drank yourself numb? Who made sure your name still meant something?”

Dominic’s voice was quiet. “And who killed her?”

Nathan looked toward the rain.

There it was.

The pause.

Tiny.

Damning.

“I did not kill Elise,” Nathan said.

Dominic almost believed the wording.

Almost.

Daniel shifted beside him.

Nathan continued. “Elise made choices. Dangerous choices. She dug into accounts she did not understand. She contacted people who wanted to use her against you.”

“She wrote me a letter.”

“She wrote many things. She was emotional.”

Dominic’s grip tightened.

Nathan’s voice softened. “You loved a woman who thought she could save you from your own world. That kind of love gets people killed.”

Dominic fired.

The bullet struck the stone beside Nathan’s head, close enough to spray dust across his cheek.

Nathan did not move, but his men did.

Daniel and Marcus moved faster.

The first man dropped his weapon. The second ran. The third tried to duck behind a covered truck and found two guards already coming through the side entrance.

In less than thirty seconds, Nathan was alone under the arch.

Still standing.

Still smiling.

But not as confidently.

“You missed,” Nathan said.

Dominic walked closer. “No.”

Nathan looked at the bullet mark beside his face and understood.

Dominic had not missed.

Dominic had chosen stone.

For now.

The woman in the dark coat suddenly stepped from behind Nathan.

Claire.

Her hair was wet. Her face was pale. Her robe had been replaced by a black dress and boots. Somehow, she had escaped the conservatory.

In her hand was Harper’s pink blanket.

Dominic stopped.

Claire lifted the blanket slightly. “You should really watch your staff better.”

Daniel whispered, “Sir, Harper is secure. I checked personally.”

Dominic did not look away from Claire. “Then why do you have that?”

Claire’s smile trembled. “Because children drop things.”

Nathan’s eyes flickered.

Not at Dominic.

At Claire.

Dominic saw it.

Claire was improvising.

Nathan hated improvisation.

“Where did you get the blanket?” Dominic asked.

Claire’s hand tightened around it. “Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe from her room. Maybe from the hall. Maybe from the person who has her.”

Dominic stared.

Then he lowered his gun.

Daniel looked alarmed. “Sir—”

Dominic said, “Claire is lying.”

Claire’s face changed.

Dominic stepped closer. “Harper would not drop that blanket. Not tonight. She gave it to Mia before she fell asleep.”

Nathan turned toward Claire slowly.

Claire backed away. “Don’t look at me like that.”

Nathan’s voice went cold. “What did you do?”

Claire laughed, but the sound broke. “What I had to.”

Dominic’s phone buzzed.

Leo.

Dominic answered without taking his eyes off them.

Leo’s voice was strained. “Sir, the medical suite is secure. Mrs. Carter and Harper are safe. But Dr. Mercer is missing.”

Dominic’s blood went cold.

Nathan smiled again.

Claire whispered, “I told you I chose survival.”

A scream rose from the carriage house interior.

Not Harper.

Not Mia.

A man.

Dr. Mercer.

Dominic moved.

Inside the carriage house, dust and engine oil filled the air. Dr. Mercer was tied to a chair near an old service elevator, alive but gagged, his glasses cracked. On the wall behind him, a metal door stood open.

A tunnel entrance.

Nathan had not come to attack.

He had come to escape.

Claire had brought the doctor as bargaining power.

Dominic cut Mercer free.

The doctor gasped. “They said they needed someone to keep Mia alive if they had to move her.”

Dominic looked back toward the arch.

Nathan was gone.

Claire too.

Daniel cursed and ran for the door.

Marcus shouted from outside. “Tunnel!”

Dominic turned to the open metal door.

A cold draft rose from below.

From somewhere deep beneath the estate came the faint sound of a gate slamming shut.

Dominic took a flashlight from Marcus.

Daniel grabbed his arm. “Sir, we should wait.”

Dominic looked at him.

Daniel let go.

Some houses were built with basements.

May you like

Some were built with graves.

Dominic Vale descended into his.
