Chapter 4 - SIX DAYSThe next forty-eight hours became a war.

Not the kind fought with guns.
The kind fought with signatures, subpoenas, bank records, lawyers, cameras, and people who had spent their entire lives believing money could erase consequences.
Ethan's lawyers contacted me first.
They offered me $3 million.
Then $5 million.
Then $10 million.
Each offer came with the same condition.
Silence.
I refused.
On the third day, Ethan called from an unknown number.
"Emily."
I recognized his voice immediately.
"What do you want?"
"Come home."
"No."
"You don't understand what's happening."
"I understand perfectly."
"Victoria and I made mistakes."
I laughed.
"That's what you're calling it?"
"Emily..."
"You crushed my wrist."
"I lost control."
"You stepped on a fracture."
Silence.
"That wasn't an accident."
His breathing changed.
"You're being manipulated."
"By whom?"
"Claire."
I smiled.
"You've always hated Claire."
"She wants your money."
"My money?"
"You're letting her destroy us."
I looked down at my cast.
"There's nothing left to destroy."
His voice became softer.
"You loved me."
"I did."
"And I loved you."
"Did you?"
"Yes."
"Then why was Victoria in our bedroom?"
Silence.
That was enough.
I hung up.
That afternoon, the first emergency hearing was scheduled.
Ethan arrived surrounded by attorneys.
I arrived alone.
The courtroom doors opened.
He looked at my cast.
His face tightened.
For the first time, I saw something like fear.
The judge reviewed the medical evidence.
The surveillance footage was submitted.
The recording showed Ethan stepping on my wrist.
His lawyers argued that the footage was incomplete.
That the incident had been provoked.
That I had behaved aggressively.
That the marriage was already collapsing.
Claire stood.
"None of that changes the fact that Mr. Vale intentionally applied force to an already fractured limb."
The judge looked at Ethan.
"Did you step on her wrist?"
Ethan's attorney answered.
"My client acknowledges physical contact occurred."
I almost laughed.
Physical contact.
That was what they called it.
The judge issued a temporary preservation order.
Certain accounts were frozen pending review.
Ethan left the courthouse furious.
I thought that would be the end of it.
It wasn't.
That evening, Victoria appeared on television.
She gave an interview.
She claimed I had fabricated the abuse.
She called me unstable.
Jealous.
Greedy.
She said Ethan had been trapped in a "toxic marriage."
Then she smiled at the camera.
"I hope Emily gets the help she needs."
I watched the interview without blinking.
Claire turned off the television.
"Don't respond."
"I wasn't going to."
"Good."
I looked at her.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Why is Ethan still so confident?"
Claire was silent.
Then she said:
"Because there's something we haven't found."
"What?"
"His real plan."
That night, I returned to the evidence.
Emails.
Contracts.
Bank transfers.
Corporate filings.
Then I saw it.
A series of payments from Vale Holdings to a shell company.
The company had one director.
Victoria Crane.
The transfers totaled $22 million.
I stared at the screen.
Twenty-two million.
Not twenty-two billion.
Twenty-two million.
And they had been moving the money for months.
I called Claire.
"Look at this."
She opened the file.
Her expression changed.
"This isn't an affair."
"What?"
"This is embezzlement."
The next transfer was scheduled for Friday.
The gala.
Their gala.
The one Ethan and Victoria had been planning for months.
A celebration of the Vale Foundation's new international expansion.
Guests included investors.
Politicians.
Celebrities.
Bankers.
Journalists.
Everyone who mattered.
And Ethan intended to announce Victoria as his new partner.
Claire looked at me.
"You're not going."
I stared at the screen.
"Yes, I am."
"Emily."
"I want the transfer stopped."
"We can get an injunction."
"I want to do it there."
"Why?"
I looked at the photograph from the invitation.
Ethan in a tuxedo.
Victoria beside him.
Both smiling.
I touched the screen.
"Because they think they're going to celebrate."
May you like
I looked at my cast.
"I think they should meet the woman they tried to destroy."
