Chapter 6 - THE EMPIRE COLLAPSESEthan didn't go to jail that night.

That disappointed everyone except me.

Because jail would have been easy.

The real punishment was watching his empire unravel.

By Monday morning, Vale Holdings was under emergency supervision.

Banks demanded explanations.

Investors panicked.

Board members resigned.

Three major partners suspended contracts.

News outlets ran the story nonstop.

BILLIONAIRE'S $22 MILLION SECRET TRANSFERS EXPOSED AT GALA

Then came the second headline.

ESTRANGED WIFE GAINS CONTROL OF VALE FAMILY FORTUNE

I hated the word "gains."

I hadn't gained anything.

I'd recovered what was already mine.

Ethan's lawyers filed twelve motions.

Claire answered all twelve.

He demanded the trust be declared invalid.

The court rejected it.

He claimed fraud.

Rejected.

He claimed coercion.

Rejected.

He claimed I had manipulated my grandfather's estate.

Rejected.

Finally, he claimed the domestic violence had been staged.

That one almost made me laugh.

Because the hospital had records.

The surveillance footage existed.

The doctor had documented the injury.

And now there was something else.

Victoria had begun talking.

She wanted immunity from prosecution.

In exchange, she gave investigators access to her devices.

Messages.

Emails.

Bank accounts.

Private conversations.

And one message changed everything.

It had been sent two weeks before my wrist was broken.

From Ethan to Victoria.

Once she signs, we move the money. If she refuses, we'll make her afraid enough to cooperate.

I read the message three times.

Then I closed my eyes.

Not because I was shocked.

Because I was finally free to stop doubting myself.

Claire sat across from me.

"You okay?"

"No."

She nodded.

"That's honest."

"I thought I was crazy."

"You weren't."

"I thought maybe I was exaggerating."

"You weren't."

"I thought maybe he didn't mean it."

Claire reached across the table.

"He meant it."

The investigation widened.

The $22 million was only one piece.

There were forged invoices.

Hidden properties.

Offshore accounts.

Tax irregularities.

False consulting agreements.

Ethan had spent years building a second financial structure beneath the public company.

And Victoria wasn't his partner.

She was his escape route.

The money had been intended to fund a new company overseas.

One that would have been impossible for the trust to reach.

They had planned to leave the country after the gala.

But they had underestimated me.

They had underestimated my grandfather.

And most importantly, they had underestimated the paperwork.

One month later, Ethan's attorneys requested a private settlement.

I agreed.

Not because I wanted to reconcile.

Because I wanted him to hear my conditions.

We met in a conference room.

Ethan looked different.

No designer confidence.

No smug smile.

Just exhaustion.

He sat across from me.

"You've destroyed everything."

I looked at him.

"No."

"You froze the company."

"You stole from it."

"You turned the board against me."

"You lied to them."

"You took my fortune."

I shook my head.

"I took control of a trust that was legally mine."

He stared at my cast.

It had been removed three days earlier.

The skin beneath it was pale.

The wrist still hurt.

He noticed the scar.

"I never meant to hurt you that badly."

I looked directly into his eyes.

"That's the problem."

He frowned.

"What?"

"You keep thinking the injury was the worst thing you did."

He said nothing.

"The worst thing you did was convince me that your cruelty was my fault."

His eyes dropped.

I stood.

"I'm not giving you your empire back."

He looked up.

"Then what do you want?"

I placed one document on the table.

"A divorce."

He stared at it.

"And?"

"Nothing."

He blinked.

"Nothing?"

"I don't want your apology."

His face tightened.

"I don't want your love."

Silence.

"And I don't want revenge."

May you like

I picked up my bag.

"I want my life."
