Chapter 15 - The Blackwood SonsGrant disappeared for two days.

Not physically. His location was known. He remained at his apartment under attorney supervision, giving statements through counsel and leaking soft-focus photographs of himself looking distressed.

But the man himself vanished from my phone, my inbox, my hospital hallway.

For two days, I breathed easier.

Then Sebastian entered with Agent Chen and closed the door.

I knew immediately.

“What did he do?”

Sebastian did not sit.

“Grant is cooperating.”

Chloe laughed sharply. “Of course he is.”

I looked from one agent to the other. “Cooperating how?”

Agent Chen answered. “He claims Evelyn manipulated him too. He says he was pressured into the relationship with you, instructed to monitor your medical vulnerabilities, and threatened with financial ruin if he disobeyed.”

My mother muttered something deeply unladylike.

I felt nothing at first.

Then a slow heat built behind my ribs.

“He wants to be a victim.”

Sebastian’s expression was careful. “He may be both culpable and manipulated.”

“No,” I said. “Don’t soften him for me.”

“I’m not.”

“He held my hand. He slept in my bed. He proposed to me with a ring he probably expensed under engagement strategy. He knew my emergency plan. He knew what low blood sugar looked like. He watched me shake. He watched his mother tear the pump from my body.”

My voice rose.

“He does not get to call that manipulation and walk away clean.”

Sebastian’s gaze held mine.

“I agree.”

The anger inside me steadied.

“What does he want?”

“Immunity consideration.”

Chloe stood. “Absolutely not.”

Agent Chen looked at her. “That decision belongs to prosecutors.”

“Then tell prosecutors I’ll testify against him too.”

I turned to Chloe.

Her face flushed, but she did not look away.

“He was my brother-in-law for twenty-three minutes,” she said. “You were my sister for twenty-eight years.”

Something in me softened.

Only a little.

But enough.

“What about Julian?” I asked.

Sebastian’s mouth tightened. “Julian is not cooperating. He has taken control of the family’s public response and is attempting to distance the foundation from Evelyn personally.”

“Meaning?”

“They’re preparing to sacrifice her.”

Chloe went still.

“They’ll say Evelyn acted alone?”

“Yes.”

“But the files—”

“They’ll claim she kept private records without institutional knowledge.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Yes.”

Agent Chen placed a document on the tray table.

“This is why Grant’s cooperation matters. He can connect Julian to the strategy meetings.”

Chloe stared at the document. “He attended them?”

“According to Grant, yes.”

Her face hardened with grief so deep it looked like calm.

“I married a man who discussed my sister like a project.”

No one spoke.

Then Chloe did something unexpected.

She asked for paper.

Sebastian handed her a legal pad.

She removed the hospital pen from my tray and wrote three names.

Julian Blackwood.

Grant Blackwood.

Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood.

Then she drew a line beneath them.

“I want to give another statement,” she said.

Agent Chen nodded. “About what?”

Chloe’s hand trembled, but her voice held.

“My prenup.”

I frowned. “What about it?”

“I didn’t read all of it.”

Despite everything, I gave her a look.

She sighed. “I know. I know. But Julian said it was standard. Evelyn said their attorneys had already reviewed it. I signed before the rehearsal dinner.”

Sebastian’s attention sharpened. “Do you have a copy?”

“No. But I remember a clause.”

“What clause?”

Chloe swallowed.

“If the marriage ended because of misconduct, scandal, mental instability, or public defamation caused by my immediate family, I forfeited all marital claims and accepted liability for reputational damages.”

My father stared at her. “That can’t be enforceable.”

Sebastian said nothing, which meant enforceable was not the point.

I understood before Chloe said it.

“They expected this,” I whispered.

She nodded.

“They built a contract around blaming me.”

Agent Chen’s expression hardened.

“What else do you remember?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“There was a schedule attached. Family obligations. Media appearances. Fertility expectations.”

“Fertility?” my mother snapped.

Chloe opened her eyes.

“Julian wanted a baby within the first year.”

My blood chilled.

The Blackwoods did not marry.

They acquired.

They managed illness, witnesses, brides, children, money, silence.

Everything was a strategy.

Everyone was a tool.

Sebastian’s phone buzzed.

He read the message, and for the first time since I met him, he looked genuinely surprised.

“What?” I asked.

He lifted his eyes.

“Evelyn just gave an interview.”

Chloe grabbed the remote.

The screen flickered to a news clip filmed outside the Blackwood estate.

Evelyn stood under a white umbrella, pale and elegant.

“I forgive Elena,” she told reporters.

My mother gasped.

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“I forgive a very sick young woman for confusing care with cruelty. I only hope she gets the help she needs before she destroys another family.”

I felt the old humiliation rise.

Then I saw Sebastian’s face.

Cold.

Focused.

Ready.

“Good,” he said.

May you like

I stared at him. “Good?”

“She just violated the no-contact order.”
