Chapter 3 - The Groom Who Wouldn’t Look UpWhile I fought to stay conscious under fluorescent hospital lights, Bellefleur Manor became a crime scene.

I learned the details later from reports, from witness statements, from videos leaked to the press, and from the one person I never expected to tell me the truth.
My sister Chloe.
But that night, while doctors ran tests and nurses cut away my ruined bridesmaid dress, Agent Vale’s team sealed the ballroom.
Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and status found themselves standing beside half-eaten lobster tails while federal agents photographed glassware.
Nobody looked glamorous under investigation.
Evelyn demanded her attorney.
Grant demanded access to me.
Julian demanded to know whether his wedding was “officially over.”
That sentence alone nearly destroyed my sister.
Chloe had been standing near the floral arch, one hand still holding her bouquet, when Julian said it. She turned to him slowly.
“My sister was just taken away in an ambulance.”
Julian loosened his bow tie. “And my mother is being humiliated by federal agents.”
“Your mother assaulted Elena.”
“She removed a device.”
“She ripped it out of her skin.”
Julian’s expression tightened, not with concern, but annoyance. “Don’t exaggerate. This family is under attack.”
Chloe looked around the ballroom.
At the federal agents.
At the guests pretending not to listen.
At the trash bin being carried away as evidence.
At the tiny amber vial inside a plastic marker on the floor.
And finally, maybe for the first time all day, she understood that she had not married into power.
She had married into a machine.
A machine that smiled in photographs while it crushed anyone inconvenient beneath its wheels.
“Where is Elena’s bag?” she asked.
Julian blinked. “What?”
“Her medical bag. Your mother said it was placed in the coat room.”
“I don’t know.”
“Then help me find it.”
Julian looked toward the agents. “Do not move. We’ve been told nobody leaves.”
“Then ask permission.”
“Chloe, this is not the time.”
Her laugh came out hollow. “Not the time? That is exactly what I said when your mother hurt my sister. Not here. Not in front of people. Not today.” Tears filled her eyes, but her voice sharpened. “There is always a reason not to help Elena, isn’t there?”
Julian’s face cooled.
“That’s unfair.”
“No. What’s unfair is that I stood under those flowers like a coward while my sister begged for juice.”
A nearby aunt lowered her eyes.
Chloe stepped away from Julian.
That was when Grant grabbed her arm.
“Don’t make this worse.”
Chloe looked down at his hand.
Then at his face.
“You watched.”
Grant’s mouth tightened. “I didn’t know Mom would go that far.”
“But you knew she would go somewhere.”
He said nothing.
Chloe pulled her arm free.
Agent Vale’s partner, the woman in the black blazer, approached. “Mrs. Blackwood?”
Chloe flinched at the name.
“I’m Special Agent Mara Chen. We need your statement.”
Julian moved between them. “My wife won’t be answering questions without counsel.”
Chloe stared at his back.
For years, I had thought my sister’s weakness was vanity. I thought she wanted pretty pictures, rich rooms, expensive approval. But that night, under the chandeliers, Chloe’s face changed.
Not dramatically.
Not all at once.
But like a woman waking up in a burning house and realizing the smoke she had been politely ignoring was coming from the walls.
She stepped around Julian.
“I’ll answer.”
Julian turned. “Chloe.”
She did not look at him.
Agent Chen asked, “Did you see Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood remove your sister’s insulin pump?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hear your sister state she needed medical treatment?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood obstruct her access to food or juice?”
Chloe’s lips trembled.
“Yes.”
“Did you know your sister’s emergency bag had been removed?”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I knew Evelyn didn’t want it in photos.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Chloe opened her eyes again.
“Yes. I knew it had been taken away.”
Julian swore under his breath.
Grant ran a hand through his hair. “You’re destroying us.”
Chloe turned then.
“No,” she said. “Your mother did that.”
At the hospital, my blood pressure dropped.
At the manor, Evelyn finally stopped pretending.
She stood near the fireplace flanked by two attorneys who had arrived faster than the ambulance had. Her hair remained perfect. Her gown remained unstained. Her diamonds still shone at her throat.
But her eyes were wild.
Agent Chen approached with two officers.
“Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood, you are being detained pending investigation into assault, reckless endangerment, evidence tampering, and suspected poisoning.”
“You cannot arrest me at my son’s wedding.”
Agent Chen looked around at the ruined ballroom.
“I believe we can.”
As they placed restraints around Evelyn’s wrists, she did not cry.
She looked at Chloe.
Then at Grant.
Then at Julian.
Her voice was soft enough that only those nearby heard it.

“If one of you talks, all of you fall.”
And Julian, the groom in the perfect tuxedo, finally looked afraid.
