Chapter 5 - ADRIAN'S LAST LIEWe escaped through the basement.

By morning, we were hiding in a motel outside Boston.
That was where Adrian finally told me everything.
Eleanor had manipulated him since childhood.
She taught him that our marriage was a business arrangement.
She told him I came from an ordinary family.
She never told him my mother was the rightful heir.
After Noah was born, everything changed.
Eleanor became obsessed with the baby.
She ordered genetic testing.
She hired investigators.
She secretly accessed hospital records.
And then she discovered Noah carried the marker.
But there was one thing Eleanor hadn't anticipated.
The DNA sample she tested wasn't Noah's.
I looked at Adrian.
“You switched it.”
He nodded.
“I couldn't let her hurt him.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of your mother?”
“Yes.”
“For six weeks?”
He looked ashamed.
“For thirty years.”
I wanted to forgive him.
I couldn't.
Not yet.
Then he handed me a flash drive.
“Everything is here.”
Bank records.
Emails.
Voice recordings.
Contracts.
Evidence of fraud.
Evidence that Eleanor had transferred millions from my family trust into shell companies.
And one recording.
Eleanor's voice.
“If Lydia refuses to surrender the inheritance, we eliminate the child.”
My blood froze.
Adrian looked at me.
“I heard that recording three days ago.”
“And you still came home?”
“I was trying to get you out safely.”
I stood.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“No, Adrian. You don't know.”
I pointed at the screen.
“You watched your mother plan to destroy our son.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You protected yourself.”
He couldn't answer.
Then my phone rang.
It was my attorney.
“Ms. Hale, we have a problem.”
“What?”
“The trust has been frozen.”
“By whom?”
“Eleanor Whitmore.”
“How?”
“She filed a claim alleging you're mentally incompetent.”
I almost laughed.
“She called me insane?”
“She's also petitioning for emergency guardianship of Noah.”
The room became silent.
Then my attorney said:
“She has a hearing tomorrow morning.”
I looked at Adrian.
May you like
Something inside me hardened.
“Then tomorrow,” I said, “we stop running.”
