Chapter 7 - THE BABY WHO WAS SWITCHEDThe hospital records changed everything.

Thirty-one years earlier, two baby girls had been born within twelve minutes of each other.

One belonged to Margaret Hale.

The other belonged to a wealthy Whitmore relative.

According to the original records, the babies were accidentally switched.

But the accident wasn't accidental.

Eleanor's father had paid a nurse to change the identification bracelets.

He wanted the Whitmore bloodline to remain in his family.

The biological Whitmore heiress was raised by the Hales.

My mother.

And I was born into that family.

That meant I wasn't merely entitled to the trust.

I was the descendant of the woman who had been robbed.

Eleanor had spent decades hiding the truth.

When my mother discovered it, Eleanor threatened her.

When my mother tried to expose it, Eleanor forced her to disappear.

And when I married Adrian...

Eleanor thought she had finally brought the Hale bloodline back under her control.

But Noah changed the equation.

He was proof.

A living descendant.

A child who could not be erased from the family tree.

The DNA test Eleanor had secretly ordered wasn't intended to determine whether Adrian was Noah's father.

It was intended to determine whether Noah carried the genetic marker.

He did.

Which meant the trust could never be legally destroyed.

Eleanor had one remaining option.

Eliminate me.

Then take Noah.

But there was another problem.

The investigators had found evidence she had attempted to arrange exactly that.

The courtroom fell silent as the recording played.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

“Make the accident look natural.”

My mother closed her eyes.

Adrian looked sick.

I didn't cry.

I couldn't.

I simply stared at the woman who had spent years pretending to be my family.

After the recording ended, the judge ordered Eleanor detained pending further investigation.

As officers approached her, she looked at me.

“You think Adrian will stay with you?”

I didn't answer.

She laughed.

“He will leave you.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“No.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“I've already lost my wife.”

He looked at me.

“I won't lose her twice.”

For the first time, Eleanor looked afraid.

But as the officers took her away, she whispered something only I could hear.

“You still don't know what happened to your father.”

I froze.

My father.

The man I had believed died naturally.

I turned toward my mother.

She was crying.

“Mom?”

May you like

She whispered:

“Your father didn't die of natural causes.”
